logical
Im going to have a go at a WIP for my next project. Seems that whenever I do a WIP I run out of steam and the model gets moved to the Shelf Of DOOM! But here we go. This is Trumpeters 1/32 Mig-29M. I think most people know about the Mig-29 so I wont bore you with too many details. It was originally conceived, along with the Sukhoi SU-27 to provide a match to the US F-X programme. The Mig-29M made its first public appearance at the 1994 Farnborogh Airshow as the Mig-33. Nato#s codename is the Fulcrum-E. On with the model itself. The box has nice painted picture of one of the inbox option Mig-29Ms in flight. Its a typical heavy duty Trumpeter box with a lift off lid. On opening the box you are confronted with the two fuselage halves tied to a carboard sheet ala Academy. And another smaller box with exhausts and some metal parts. In the kit there is a total of 23 sprues. Three of which are clear plastic for the canopy, IP and lights. Six (Trumpeter are including the fuselage halves) are for the aircraft itself then the other 14 are for the weapon stores and fuel tanks. Its all nicely molded with very little flash. There are a few seams and some ejection pin marks but unlike previous Trumpeter kits the ejection pin marks arent in places that would be difficult to manage with. The canopy is moulded really nicely. Nice and clear with very little distortion plus, for a canopy this size, no seam line down the middle. Theres a bit of dust on this one but thats no issue. Instructions are the normal Trumpeter fare too. With the paint callout for the plane and the weapons on a separate colour sheet. The decals and stencils are on two sheets. One for the markings of the two aircraft and another for the huge amount of stores available. Theyre in register though and look to be great fitting them will be the great decider. Detailing is well done. No detail in places that wouldnt be seen anywhere. The cockpit is well detailed. The IP is made up of three parts including a clear front and an acetate set of panels. The Mig-29M has 2 monochrome displays which are nicely represented. The ejector seat is made up of a total of 14 parts. Including PE seatbelts and a nicely moulded cushion. Should build up to a really good representation of the Migs seat. This will depend on my skills I think. I need to work out how to do the broken leather look though from photos Ive seen. Rest of the sprues look good. As said flash is minimal to non-existant. Moulding is crisp and not too heavy. Theres metal cores for the landing gear. Landing gear looks a little basic. But the real thing has quite basic looking gear anyway. I know there is an issue with the engine intake faces and FOD screens. But Ill be using some resin FOD covers. Theres also a reported issue on the exhausts. The flame holders are fitted to the end of the nozzles. And could do with several feet of piping creating. So as my scratch building skills dont exist Ill be covering these too J But the rest will be all out of the box. The payload thats available in the box is 2 x R-27AE 2 x R-27T 2 x R-60MK 2 x R-73E 2 x R-77 2 x Kh-25ML 2 x Kh-25MP 2 x Kh-31P 2 x Kh-29L 2 x Kh-29T 2 x Kh-35A 2 x PTB-1150 external wing tanks 2 x PTB-1500 centerline tanks So heres a few more sprue shots then on with the build.
logical
Well I've started in the place where nearly every aircraft kit I've built starts. The Bang seat. It's all glued together and undercoated. So no picture just yet. I'll get some later. I've seen a walkaround of the ejection seat and there is wear round the headbox where the black leather is cracked and showing the brown underneath. Any ideas on how to recreate this?
rudolf24
You can make a drybrush with brown paint . I will looking for the next progress .

logical
Bit more done with the cockpit. Probably not very accurate but again I like it.
rudolf24
Cockpit looks nice, but please fix the hud. It's look horribale in this scale.
Alan P
Seat looks good but I have to (less bluntly) agree with rudolf, the HUD housing is a bit wayward. It's an easy fix though! Edited August 13, 2015 by Brokenedge
logical
It's something that will get done. The Hud housing got broken in the packet so just need to let glue set properly.
logical
Here's an update. It stalled a little bit when some other kits arrived as usual. So I was playing around with a Revell 1/32nd FW190 too. Here's where I am so far. Had a go at fixing the HUD housing as best I could looks a lot better now. One question though should there be a droop in the wings? I can't see a way of rectifying it though if there shouldn't now the Fuselage is all buttoned up. But this is the other one I've been playing around with. Trying out some weathering and Warhammer technical paint
markjames68
Your exhaust weathering on the 190 looks great
logical
Your exhaust weathering on the 190 looks great I painted it as the instructions said. Then used the Tamiya weathering powders with some Warhammer Typhus Corrosion over the top followed by a wash of Warhammer Nuln Oil. Undercarriage bays will get a similar treatment just without the Tamiya stuff.
logical
Bit of an update. More on the Camo of the 190.
logical
Mig still hasn't moved on. But the 190 has. Some weathering done. Going to do a little chipping next. Then clear coat. EDIT: Oh and paint the U/C doors
logical
Getting close with the 190. Needs bombs, fuel tanks and a few odds and sods. A matt cote and she'll be done. I'm impressed with the weathering my skills are improving I think. It has been pointed out that there should be a ridge around the nose which I've made the mistake of filling. But you live and learn
logical
Got to the point where I can start painting the mig. But I can't get the colours to look right. The Trumpeter instructions show a green which is backed up by some pictures online. But I painted it as close to this as possible and it doesn't look right. What colours should I be using? logical
Finally happy with paint. Looks a little tired and faded but that's what I was aiming for. Got some paint bleed under the windscreen. Tried to get rid of it but my paint remover made a mess. Will get pictures so far when I've picked my daughter up from school. logical
Pictures as promised. Tried the salt weathering technique but not sure it worked very well.
