I’d always assumed things were straightforward with Phantoms. Starting to see they enjoy similar complications with versions. If you think that is confusing have a look at the discussion we had in rumourmonger on the new Finemolds Phantom and the RF-4EJ designation.
Filler
@iainpeden, that RF-4EJ discussion does take some following and I'm still not sure about what exactly kai means to the various Phantom versions in Japan. I stumbled across another Phantom discussion on here that might even trump the kai conversation though: Noses and pylons and slatted things. I see now that Phantoms beat the F-16 for version confusion. Also, wrong thread, but that Finemolds Phantom looks like one heck a kit. It's 1/72 but there appears to be more detail in it than any 1/48 kit I've ever seen. Phabulous!

It really confused me a few years ago when I went to see it. Very interesting ! I checked the history of that aircraft and I couldn't find anything special, wonder why she never got the slats ? Maybe this aircraft was simply retired before the modification. I checked out of curiosity other aircraft in the same Bureau Number range and all got the slats.. keeping in mind that the serial numbers remained the ones originally allocated as F-4J! All aircraft in this number range were however converted to the F-4S standard, with the obvious exception of those lost before the program started
