mbdesignart Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) Here is the inspiration for my build along with some reference shots of the Superleggera which features some upgrades I may incorporate. Also I'm thinking of an underseat exhaust, maybe the Zard one? Kit build photos to follow. Edited February 17, 2017 by mbdesignart pics removed 4
mbdesignart Posted August 3, 2015 Author Posted August 3, 2015 Brake discs drilled out. The rear one will need some sanding to remove the sink holes. I have also completed some sub-assemblies, again filling to some pieces is required notably the swing arm. 1
mbdesignart Posted August 9, 2015 Author Posted August 9, 2015 Latest update... Exhaust springs made from thin single core wire from what looks like computer ribbon [who knows where I got that from!?], wrapped around a 0.35mm dia twist drill. I fed a strand down the spring core and bent it to form the hook. Under the naked eye these all looked a bit more tightly coiled, looks like the smaller ones need redoing. This is the beginnings of the Zard underseat exhaust. The kit sub-assemblies are taped together to gauge the pipe run, I was hoping to reuse the loop from the kit but I think it may be too open. The angled sections will need some more bending and I need to make a couple of extra sections to go into the end cans etc., etc., - all from a No.8 plastic knitting needle formed over a candle during this morning's confessional . The square of plasticard has 3 lengths of plastic tube glued together, the edges then have to be bent over the centre tube, glued, left to dry then cut along the centreline forming the triangular shape, thus forming the end cans. If it all goes awry I will still have the kit exhaust to fall back on. 3
Rich G Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Looks quite impressive already, are you going to be scratch building the bodywork also? If you are, that will be really impressive and will certainly give you a one of a kind model to stand out from the crowd!! Rich
heloman1 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 (edited) Ooooooooh, Mark, looking very good.I do like the srings just about right. They are difficult to make, aren't they? Colin Edited August 10, 2015 by heloman1
mbdesignart Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 Thanks Rich, If the exhaust works I will need to do something with the fairing as there will be gaping holes where the stock end cans go. I am also toying with making a tubular trellis swing arm but that's just a pipe dream at present! Colin Heloman1, Short springs remade. Difficult, well they wound me up!
mbdesignart Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 Update... still knitting the exhaust. I have most of the sections cut and formed to size, what's left is the link pipe from the Y to the loop and trimming the pipe from the front cylinder where it butts to the loop. The openings in the end cans need fettling and the outlet pipes adding. Some brackets for the joint springs and a 'Lambada' sensor, well it's an all singing and dancing system! [stock pipe shown for comparison] 2
heloman1 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Looking good mark, it's coming together nicely. Colin
imster Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 those cans look great! keep up the good work mate
mbdesignart Posted August 31, 2015 Author Posted August 31, 2015 Been reworking the exhaust pipes from plastruct tube as I was far from happy with the Y piece, which now resides in the bin of inadequacy. Much cutting and shutting of new sections to do. Also looking at something special with the wheels which has sidetracked my attention - but that's Top Secret for now . I'll post some pics of the exhaust once its together, hopefully next week.
MikeGTC Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Nice work so far! Do like that one from the second and third picture. Good luc kwith building it. Mike
mbdesignart Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) The Zard system is now in the spares box due to not being able to achieve satisfactory pipe bends. A search for alternatives resulted in this which is a simple 'slip-on' system. This will be much closer to the look of Paul Smart bike and free up the undertail section. Made from bits of Plastuct, 4mm dia rod and other bits. Due to the kit mounting location points for the hanging brackets not being quite as the real thing I cut off the front one and replaced it with tube to capture the small screw and extended the front U section. Some slight filling to do and then I can get the kit primed, at last. Edited September 19, 2015 by mbdesignart 3
mbdesignart Posted October 8, 2016 Author Posted October 8, 2016 It's back, the fits & starts Buddy Build! Whilst busy priming my Heller H Van [build post in WIP] I thought I'd may as well as add this to the pile of bits to spray. However, looking at the Paul Smart bike I decided to take a brave pill and attack the fairing. You can see where I have made the cut and this will expose quite a bit of the engine and hopefully reflect my take on the PS bike. The rear corner of the upper section has been rounded off to reflect the stock section above, now for the other side. I'm still also pondering on a trellis frame rear swing arm!! !
mbdesignart Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 Well I'm past pondering on the trellis frame swing arm and have cracked on with bending, cutting and swearing at bits of plastruct tube and rod. This still needs a lot of work filling, filing and fettling which should keep me quiet. The first pic is one for a Ducati Monster which gave me the basis for my Panigale version. 3
injidup Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 (edited) A work of art! Can't wait to see it painted. I love the PS replicas, the silver one in your pic looks beautiful. Went to look at a new Ducati last week*. Might be trading up from my Scrambler. Edited October 19, 2016 by injidup *Not a Panigale, though. 3
heloman1 Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Trellis swing arm looks great Mark. the pic almost looks like a 3D redering. Colin
mbdesignart Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks for the comments. I've done a bit more filling and sanding and have decided, before going too much further I need to add a couple of pinch bolts to the back of the hub and whilst I'm at it some cable runs for the rear brake. This may take a while to get around to as I'm busy with last minute jobs for SMW. injidup, I have been eyeing up a Hyperstrada as I have fond memories of a Multistrada I had a while back. There is definitely something about a Ducati...
injidup Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I had a Multistrada as a loan bike when I got my Scrambler serviced. Very nice but far too much bike for me, but the Hyper models suit me much better. I'm finding the Scrambler a bit small, keep scraping my toes! Not much difference between the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada but I don't need the touring bits yet. Shouldn't be spending the money and I've only had the Scrambler just over a year but... must... resist!

Also on the front mud guard are you using carbon fibre look? If so how are you gonna achieve that look Edited October 23, 2016 by cookiezoom
injidup Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Oh dear. I seem to have bought a real Ducati. Glad they didn't have a Paul Smart at the dealers, that would have been very hard to resist! And probably waaaay out of my price range. Did see a beautiful 250 Desmo though. i am really tempted to get the Tamiya Panigale now... 2

If so how are you gonna achieve that look Re the discs it will either be AlClad or, if it's still ok in the tin, some Humbrol Polished Aluminium. It won't be matt, if you look at your bike's brake discs from a distance to match the 1/12 ones that should give you a fair indication of the finish. As for the front mudguard most likely silver as per the PSM bike. I can't see a need for Carbon Fibre on my version of this bike. Build update - pinch bolts and brake cable runs have been added to the trellis swing arm along with more filler and sanding but I'm still not happy with the finish. I'm going to try some Albion Alloys needle files to get into the joints. But I have to leave this, again, for my Citroen H Van build. A case of too many pies, not enough fingers...
