Hasegawa Jaguar GR3 the last boot drops

Recommended Posts

For those of you waiting for the last of my trio of Jaguarrery here we are

I decided I'd like to 'do' Jaguars in both of their regular liveries, even though the Light Aircraft Grey undersides was current when they came into service they were pretty well all over Green - Grey camo toute suite on the new scheme becoming current.

The grey all over scheme is so pale it is hard to realise it is based on the previous upper surface Dark Sea Grey with sides and undersurfaces in dark Camouflage Grey

I couldnt believe it 'til I did it

Anyway, I bought this Hasegawa kit from my usual model supplier, eBay and got down to it pretty quickly

Pretty quickly realised that Hasegawa hadn't used plans, just a lightning sketch from a Shizoka pavement artist when they made the moulds

Most of the airframe realistically and accurately represents a single seater, from the canopy back it is lovely but the nose, oh boy the nose is nearly three eighths of an inch too long :yikes:

And too pointy too unlike the elderly Airfix kit which has a profile that accurately replicates the real thing

That took a huge amount of hacking back and building up the 'Roman nose' profile of the nose

LRMTS has been carved from clear sprue with the seeker head drilled into the back of the block, then shaped and polished

And the airbrakes are weird, the ten holes in the airbrake surface are shown as rectangular lumps and like the Italeri kit the mainwheel legs are pants

And so to business, (I hope Steve remembers to check the nose against a set of plans before he risks his stellar reputation on one of these) Pavla seat with the seat belt strapping removed and replaced with paper strappings and the Pavla interior set for the driver's cubby hole were added along with after market wheels to replace the oversize Hasegawheels

Main gear legs were given the fettled additions like the others had too ;)

Usual detailing on u/c and the nosewheel cover got brand new Little Cars lenses and lamp bodies

Italeri donated a pair of their unwanted overwing fence missile rails and I hand cast a pair of underwing tanks

Home brewed decals for the danger/rescue warning signs printed up and on with the chase

Here is ED of 6 Sqn RAF equipped for electronic battle, Sidewinder aquisition round and I think, an ACMI doohdah

Tucked away underneath, tidy like, is a CBLS100 for use in its proper job

Hope you like it

I'm quite pleased with the pre-shading I tried out for the first time on this model, but not too happy with the underfuselage stores rail, I think I need to cut the front recess back, the CBLS100 isn't sitting quite right :(

The preshading gave a very subtle variation to the upper surfaces where Jags were often seen to get quite mucky

Not really visible here due to my mistake photography I have added variations in the grey paints around the fuselage to hint at the often patchwork quilt look of the fuselage too

Me?

I kinda like this one a lot on the whole after all that lot :)

Cheers Roger, I quite like this'n lots too

I am taking it easy for a bit, three at once is not the best idea I ever had, then may be starting on a scratchbuilt Hansom cab I've drawn up

It will be nice to get an easy build going for a change

Glad you like the Jags mate, thank you

Another outstanding piece of work from the class of 3 big cats.

The ACMI doohdah is a RAIDS pod ( Rangeless Airborne Instrumentation Debriefing System). A self contained air combat debrief system that can be used anywhere, not confined to the ACMI ranges off the Lincs coast or Deci.

Your CBLS problem is why the short tail fairing was made for the Jag. That step in the centreline pylon prevented a long tailed ceebly fitting correctly.

So the problem is your wonderfully hand crafted CBLS is actually just a tad too long. But meeeh, who cares, it still looks great.

Rob.

Cheers, I thought that was why there was a cutaway there

Most of the problem is self inflicted in some ways Airfix's centre rail looks about right but the Hasegawa and Italleri ones are different

I think this one was the one that was too deep and had the wrong slope and a cutaway at the back too which I had to file to a shallower depth and make a new front cutaway

Obviously I didn't quite get the cutaway back far enough :(

Making the CBLS sit further forward to sit in its proper place would have had it sitting improbably far forrards

So next week I will be sitting down fixing the anomalies that you guys have highlighted

The fact that some of you will take the trouble TO show me where it has gone wrong is what I like best about RFI

Thank you Rob and Selwyn, etc for vitally important info

And the others too, cheers

I do have a soft spot for the Jaguar, I was very fortunate enough to "fly" the Jag simulator just before the closure of Coltishall as a guest of 6 Sqn, happy days, your 6 Sqn Jag looks the dogs danglies.

I missed this one for a while there Bill. And to think you weren't gonna post up an RFI. Shame on you........:)

Stellar? Stellar as in star - as symbolised by an asterisk (*) as commonly used to replace rude and derogatory words? I see through you Bill you mean stellar as a crafty replacement for cr*p...........

But.....expect a PM when I start a jag build requesting a blow by blow break down of necessary mods.....

I do have a soft spot for the Jaguar, I was very fortunate enough to "fly" the Jag simulator just before the closure of Coltishall as a guest of 6 Sqn, happy days, your 6 Sqn Jag looks the dogs danglies.

I was unfortunate enough to spend hours and hours in that simulator practising engine failures, hydraulic failures, electrical failures combination of failures and generally getting very maxed out and making a fool of myself........
