I've started this thread in the hope that people finding videos of relevance to aircraft modelling will post links.

On 21st and 22nd July 2015, AP and British Movietone uploaded a huge archive of videos to their channels.

WW2- 'Malta Bombed' newsreel, containing footage of Naval defences, some Axis aircraft, some land footage too.

Battle of Britain week- some time in the 1950's? Features aerial footage of Spitfire, Hurricane, Hunter and Javelin (the later two described in the notes as 'possibly Lightening. Also Delta wing fighter.'

Battle of Britain- Hurricanes of 56 Sqn (US codes) and 213 Sqn (AZ codes). Gun camera footage. Shots of crashed German aircraft of ground.

Hi ben

regarding the last clip

there is a page of still from 56 Sq, but not including US-Z, which was Jumbo Gracie's plane

The 213 Sq Hurricanes at 0.55 to 0.59 are pre war, note the B type roundels and watts prop and fabric wing, and what looks like a camera gun on the wing. Serial L1*80?

Underfuselage looks white as well. Note no fabric over gun ports.

Nice footage of the Spit and Hurri on the ground at Martlesham Heath. Some of the hangars remain, but the 'A' and 'B' flight hangars are gone.

'A' went under a new Tesco. 'B' had a preservation order on it. Tesco wanted more warehousing space. Instead of the obvious, they levelled the hangar.....and built a cafe on it. :mental::shutup:

Hurricane Mk. IIc newsreel- No. 1 Sqn Hurricanes. 'Sham fight' against captured Ju 88 (with British roundels). Gun camera footage of shipping strikes.

Canadian Hurricane production- newsreel starts with RAF launch footage. Finishes with short glimpse of a B24 "Latest U.S. bomber leaves for Britain".

Mixed footage footage- No Sound at start. Dark blue? malta spitfires Mk. V, with 2x 20mm and 4x .303; then aerial footage of 6 Spitfire Vc with 4x 20mm. Ah.. I see their DB code and 250lb bombs- 2 Sqn SAAF '43-early 44. At around 4 minutes, sound starts. Cuts to footage maybe 4 or even 5 years older, showing early Mk.I spitfires with 2 bladed props. Prewar? footage of Ju52s doing paratroop drop. Spitfire production at Vickers works- again pre-war. Wellesleys at RAF Amman. Then aircraft carrier with Griffon-engines Spit/Seafires (this must be near the end or post-war). South East Asia. OK, they are 80 Sqn Spit F24s, which makes it 1948-52. Now back in UK, it looks like. Spitfire PR MK XIX taxiiing, then aerial shots- post-war roundels, PRU blue, with lighter spinner. Now in Ireland, again no sound. Irish Spitfire Mk.IXs taking off and aerial footage. Ends with a haunting image of an old lady... well, that is a strange mix!

Strange footage, mostly of models short clip at 2:20 of Hurricane Mk I of 501 Sqn.

213 Sqn Hurricanes escorting Hudson carrying General Jan Smuts (links in first comment go to aircraft parts).

MacRobert Hurricanes presentation- Hurricane IIc, lots of good nose-art shots.

2 bladed Hurricane Mk.Is at North holt. L1558 and L1553 in foreground. Sqn crest small on tail. Sqn Ldr Denys Gillam. King's visit.

I think this one is German propoganda, I don't think it is real combat. I remember the footage of the attacking Spitfire from another clip on YouTube. It is unusual for having roundels close together on the upper wings. The 'aircraft' strafed on the ground (apparently the crashed spit) has square wing tips, and widely spaced roundels. Good footage on the ground of 109s and Ju 87. Could the 'attacking' Spitfire be a captured aircraft?

Photo interpretation- stereoscopy, Genoa bombing raid analysis.

Thunderbolt and Typhoon Razorback Thunderbolts, Captured FW 190, 263 Sqn Typhoon Mk.Ib, 56 Sqn Typhoon Mk Ia.

Farnborough Air Show- Red Arrows (Gnats) long display, 4x hovering Harrier GR1, Concorde flypast and touch-and-go landing, Saab Viggen x2

Schneider Trophy: Course aerial footage 1929 (I think) Supermarine S5 and S6, Pilots 1931- flying footage, pilots on ground, launching and recovery

Real mixture in this one- WWI fighters, Interwar biplanes Schneider Cup, Hurricane production, Blenheim IV production, Battle factory, Wellington factory, Whitleys, Blenheim IV formation taxiing, Blenheim Mk.I low passes, Beaufighter, Stirling, Halifax, More Blenheim Mk.I, Hudsons, B17s, Wellingtons, then to BoB Hurricanes and Spitfires

Hi Colin, I'm mostly doing it for my own reference! But there is a lot of interesting stuff- most I think has been posted before to YouTube, but most of that is from VHS transfers, so these are better quality. They say there is over a million minutes of newsreel uploaded, which is quite a lot to search through, particularly when it is sometimes jumbled up and poorly described!

  • 1 year later...

Supermarine S4 newsreel footage.  The first I've ever seen, but perhaps just 'old news' to others..

Found on British Pathe site, not specifically indexed as such so it could be easily missed.  See here, at 1 minute in:

What a cracking futuristic machine!!

(I think part of this footage is included in the old David Niven film 'the first of the few')

I suspect the '501 squadron' footage is for a 50's film,  why? only one plane, and the roundels are in the wrong places,  on the fuselage, too far back,  and wings , too far outboard, ... and the roundel proportion looks wrong as well.

I present this as proof m'lud

Anyone know what film this might  be,  I have  seen some other film  of this plane.... ( now where did I see it....)
