EV2UK
Hello. In currently building the 1/72 Revell merlin HMA.1 (the one with the tiger stripes) It's been in the cupboard for around 5 years I guess. The decals look perfect as regards to color and condition but my God they are thick and I can't stop them from silvering. I have so far only started decaling the rotors with the small stencil type decals but the carrier film is really thick and it looks like I've sellotaped them on. I have tried all sorts... I've given the rotors a couple of coats of Klear.. Both the new and old type and others with a coat of Hannants gloss. I've tried both micro set & sol and have bought some Mr.Hobby set & solution but these have no effect. I've even tried setting them down on a small amount of Klear. I should add that after the decals are applied and covered with another coat of gloss then a satin coat the silvering pretty much goes. So.. Is there some magic trick to deal with thick decals, I'm considering making masks for the tiger stripes and have even wondered if a new one world have better decals as the kit has recently been re-released.. Many thanks Tony Edited July 17, 2015 by EV2UK
Giorgio N
Thick decals usually require stronger setting solutions. Daco has a range of setting solutions going from mild to strong, there may be some even stronger around.
andym
I'll second what Giorgio says, try the Daco strong stuff. Or alternatively get an aftermarket set of decals, I believe Modelart do a set. HTHAndy Edited July 23, 2015 by andym
SaintsPhil
One other trick you could try, that worked for me on Tamiya decals, is to use near boiling water to soak them on before you apply them.
colin
As with above, hot water and multiple applications of micro sol. I have normally been able to get the thicker decals to lay down with this method, just be careful with the stronger solutions doing this, as their likely to just turn into a blob though
Lancbuilder219
I found a similar problem with some aftermarket decals recently. Too thick and inflexible (I use Humbrol Decalfix). Took several applications to get big decals eg Roundels to sit properly. Also found them way to vivid in the colour too.
