jrlx
The decals turned out very well! Cheers Jaime
Airgunner
Another small update, small in pictures but it was a couple of hours work... Got all the decals on both aircraft now. Gone for a mixture of code sizes, roundel sizes, tail flahes etc. By all photos of 87 Squadron machines I've seen they are a pretty eclectic bunch so I've tried to reflect that here.. More soon, thanks for looking.. Steve
jrlx
Hi Steve, Both aircraft look great. Is that missing piece of tail plane done on purpose? I don't recall it being mentioned before in the WIP. Cheers Jaime
Airgunner
Hi JaimeWell spotted, no the tail isn't supposed to be like that, I dropped the model when I was decalling it all fixed now though. Airgunner
Time for another small update. Having looked at some reference photos again, I really wasn't happy with that big 'ole snake of fuse wire I'd slapped on the the gear doors. It was way oversized, and in the wrong place, photos showing at the top it actually goes over the undercarriage leg and fits to the top of it. So I hooked it off and used some smaller .2mm wire for a better look. Also somehow during this process the carpet, or rather shed floor, monster ate one of the gear doors. Fortunately, like all new Airfix kits, they offer a gear up option, so I cut and modified one of those doors. I also noticed that the mould seams were still on the legs so cleaned them up too. Just waiting for it all to set and I will paint them. I then turned my attention to the landing lights. Rather than just painting the lens silver, I punched out some discs if silver paper to use as the reflectors... The clear parts were set in blue-tac to hold them, whilst a blob of cyano was put on then the paper pushed into the reflector with the round end of a paintbrush to form the dish shape. Once they are dry, I will drill a hole in the middle and use a bit of streched clear sprue to represent the bulbs.. That's all for now, more soon, thanks for looking. modelling minion
Nice work Steve. Looks like they will be finished soon. I think your painting and decalling have come out great, very convincing. Craig.
rob85
They look brilliant so far. I am a big fan of how your paintwork has come out, especially on the upper surface. Cheers Rob
Airgunner
Hi Rob & Craig, Thanks for the comments, really helps with motivation with the build. A small update tonight, been doing various little odds and ends, but I've put a panel line wash on the undersurface. I used a very thin Paynes Grey oil wash, heavily thinned with turps. I'm not a fan of very dark washes in panel lines I much prefer just a hint they are there... I left it to dry for about an hour before wiping the excess off... It's come out just as I'd hoped, so tomorrow on to a bit of light weathering and grime. Thanks for looking, more soon, Steve

Airgunner
Got a bit more done today... Landing lights in place... And the gun covers painted.. First part of the underside weathering, tring to simulate fluid leaks with a black wash, heavily thinned, dabbed on and then blown in the direction of airflow with very low pressure from my airbrush... Then I made a start on the exhaust painting. Alclad Exhaust Manifold, overspreayed with a very light dust of Alclad Pale Gold... A coat of Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue to try and simulate the heat bluing of the metal...this will be followed by a black wash and gunmetal dry prush...sorry for the poor photo.. One last bit for now, the undercart is done... That's all for now, thanks for looking. Steve
rob85
That is some great weathering you have achieved... I hope you don't mind me using it for reference when I finish off mine! Cheers Rob

Airgunner
Well, after what seems an eternity of life getting in the way, I've made a little progress at last. I have finally got Comeley's machine done.. I'm hoping to get some time over the next couple of days to get Lovell-Gregg's aircraft done, it's nearly there, just not quite More soon, thanks for looking.. Airgunner
Well, I've run out of time, and had a bit of a disaster with Lovell-Greggs machine. I broke the tailwheel off and have somehow lost one of the landing light covers. A visit to the LHS to try and find another kit came up empty. It will be done as soon as I can source another kit, but for now I have to admit defeat on this one. But Peter Comeley's machine is done, and posted in the Gallery, here is a taster.. It's been a fun group build with so many excellent models built, so thanks to all for running it. On to the next one...
