Hawker Hurricane Mk.I, I. R. Gleed, 87 Squadron RAF, Hasegawa 1/48

Recommended Posts

Good morning to all,

I want to participate in this group with a 87 Squadron RAF Hurricane Mk.I, piloted by ace Ian R. Gleed.
The plane shows the personal mark of Gleed, a cat named Figaro that appears in the Disney film Pinocchio, and that was his personal emblem on all planes in which he flew to his disappearance
The kit is the Mk.I 1/48 Hasegawa Nightfighter, although I build day fighter. Like almost all models of this brand the level of detail is very high and the quality of finish is remarkable.
I put the ceremonial pictures of the box and some content here.

I will use some aftermarket as Eduard's RAF seatbelts WWII and a paint mask of the same brand that has not yet arrived.

I hope to do a good job because both the event and the site deserve.

Thank you very much to all and welcome.

Hi

this should help

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234945878-night-hurricane/

specifically, note has pictures of plane as nightfighter and before. It has the red flashes behind spinner in the daylight scheme.

The scheme is based on Ian Gleed's plane, when was Sq ldr, in winter 40/41 and Hurricanes were being used as nightfighter's.

the plane was previously in standard TLS.

IN this earlier version it was a decal option done by Airfix on the 1/24th kit [red spinner, no flash] and Hasegawa 1/48 th [pale blue spinner, with flash]

found some pics on a hyperscale bunfight

this is cropped, the orig you can see the wing of the Hurricane from which the photo was taken. Do a goggle image search for more ;)

the oversize fuselage roundel was result of adding a 7 inch yellow ring to an existing 35 A type roundel.

There is a photo in Hurricane at War 2 which clearly shows the red flash behind the spinner as well.

Gleed's 'Figaro' cat emblem painted on the escape panel

Gleed-portrait2-opt%5B1%5D.jpg

survives to this day in the RAF museum

Figaro800x458.jpgLooking at this again, the sharp eyed will notice the panel preserved in the RAF musuem is a different 'Figaro' to the one of Gleed in the cockpit.

I think there is mention of this in the RAF musuem...there may even be 2 panels there.

Been too long since I was there and I don't need to go off on a hunt for that info right now....

Note, the preserved panel, the paint is chipped on the metal parts, but the main part of the panel is plywood covered in fabric, if you look carefully in the lower left you can see some wear on the fabric.

The Hase kit has some issues.

For non Hurricane obsessive, the underfuselage joint is the big problem, suggest cutting small fabric part off lower wing, split down centreline, attach each side to respective fuselage half to allow a smooth join and use some plastic sheet inside wing to make a new mounting for fuselage.

Does that make sense?

Also, you need to remove the tropical vents under the cockpit.

If this gobbledegook for anyone... here's a pic, the two little black lines directly below the pilots right foot, are vents to help cooling on tropical aircraft, and are not seen until 1941.

They are on the Hase kit as is uses one generic fuselage sprue.

PS this is the pic from Hurricane at War 2, note the nose flash

Finally, Hasegawa will say paint the interior grey-green. This is wrong

An interesting man, Ian Gleed. If you haven't read his book "Arise to conquer" you should do so: Dry but a compelling real view of the fighter pilots life. You should ignore the bit about his girlfriend "Pam" as he was gay and took little trouble to hide it, perhaps just as brave as his in plane deeds given the views of the time.

What a interesting post! and how much useful information. Thank You So Much.

Cockpit paint will be interior green, that I know, but I don't know that the the union of the fuselage with the propeller wore red also as shown in the last photo.

I will consider these tips to the model assembly and painting.

Thank you very much again for the information and welcome

Morning all
Early work assembly:
I made the cockpit assembly. Overall very good unions and realistic feel.
I tried to bring all elements of the cockpit and gain depth and striking because, unfortunately, the canopy can not be left open as it comes molded in one piece.
I hope you like the final effect of all parts

The next work will be the union of the wings, landing gear wells and fuselage's junction.

OK, I try to repaint the crossovers of the cockpit with aluminum, but today I have merged the two halves of the fuselage.

I have included this color in the joystick and I kept green with wear proper use that show the aluminum frame.

In other walkarounds I have also seen the floor of the cockpit in black and I liked the feeling of depth of the effect wear colored by the aluminum.

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks Troy, I didn't know that there were multiple versions of Gleed's Figaro on the emergency exit panel.
