Revell 1:32 Spitfire IIa, 19 Sqn October 1940

This Spitfire joined 19 Sqn at RAF Fowlmere near Duxford on 25th September 1940, and was flown by S/Lt Arthur Blake when he was shot down by Bf 109 on 28th October 1940, so this aircraft only flew for one month... it took me longer than that to build it!

Fujimi 1/72 Ju87B-2 T6+HL, Wk Nr 5580 of 3/StG2, St.Malo, August 1940

The aircraft represented here was one of four Ju87s of the 3rd Staffel of StukaGeschwader 2 that were shot down on 16th August 1940 while carrying out an attack on RAF Tangmere. The pilot, Uffz Ernst König and the gunner Uffz Josef Schmid were both wounded and taken as prisoners of war.

Fujimi 1/72 Ju87R-2 A5+CL of 3/StG1, Angers, July 1940

I haven't been able to find any pictures definitely attributable to StG1 in France so have had to base the scheme on what the aircraft looked like in May and assuming that the appearance would have remained broadly the same by July... the aircraft code is in the staffel colour yellow, but the forward part of the spinner is in the 1st Gruppe colour, white.

I wanted to include a StG1 aircraft mostly due to the little diving raven badge based on the German children's story of Hans Huckebein (The Unlucky Raven).

Kiwi III 'R6981' was Al Deere's mount on 15 August 1940 flying with 54 Squadron from RAF Hornchurch.

On 15th August 1940, this aircraft was damaged in combat with Messerschmitt Bf109's over Dunkirk. After nursing the aircraft as far as possible towards RAF Hornchurch, Al Deere was forced to bail out from this aircraft over Kent. The aircraft crashed in Pope Street, Godmersham, near Ashford and was totally destroyed. Al Deere spent the night in Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead having been slightly injured during the bail out.

Fujimi 1/72 Ju87B-1 S2+LM, Wk Nr 5600 of 4/StG77, Caen/Bougy, 8th August 1940

The aircraft represented here was one of three Ju87s - 2 from StukaGeschwader 77 and one from StukaGeschwader 3 - that were shot down on 8th August 1940 while attacking a convoy off the Isle of Wight. The aircraft force landed at St. Lawrence, near Ventnor, almost intact but with the gunner, Uffz Rudolf Schubert, killed and the petrol feed lines shot through. The pilot, Uffz Fritz Pittroff was taken as a prisoner of war.

Airfix 1/72 scale Hawker Hurricane Mk1, converted to a metal-winged version by filling and sanding off all the fabric detail and rescribing. The markings, RF-F of 303 Sqn, the aircraft of high-scoring Polish Ace Witold Urbanowizc, are from TechMod. Colours are Tamiya acrylics, airbrushed and the gunport patches are made from gummed cigarette paper. The Infantry figures in the last shot are Zvezda 1/72, painted with Vallejo acylics.

MadNurseGaz's 610 Sqn Spitfire Mk.1,RAF Biggin Hill, July 1940.

Build thread:http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234984648-spitfire-610-sqn-biggin-hill-july-1940/

This is the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.1, built OOB and finished in the kit's scheme with its own decals. Paints by Humbrol, Revell,

and Windsor & Newton! Shame about the silvering of the decals . . .

Unfortunately, I'd disposed of the remnants of the Eduard masking set, before realising what the little squares were!

Thanks to Mish, our GB co-ordinator, for her hard work organising the GB calendar and setting up the GBs, and to Procopius, Enzo Matrix and PaulR

for hosting this GB and to all participants. A superb collection of models, and a fitting tribute to both "the Few" and their adversaries . . .

Following swiftly on from my Spitfire, here is the Messerschmitt Bf109E.

Built from the 1/72 Airfix kit, and finished in the kit colour scheme, with its own decals, this represents the aircraft flown by Oblt. Franz von Werra,

GruppenAdjutant of 1/JG.3, based at Samer, France in August 1940.

Von Werra later achieved fame for his escaping exploits. Having been shot down over England, he made several escape attempts before being

shipped to Canada to a PoW camp, but jumped from the train carrying the prisoners, making his way to the (then neutral) USA, where he contacted

German diplomats and was eventually repatriated to Germany. It is believed that his report on the conditions in which the British held PoWs led to an

improvement in the conditions for British PoWs in Germany. Von Werra was killed in late 1941 after an engine failure on a test flight caused his Bf109F

to go down in the North Sea. His body was never recovered . . .

The last of my builds for this GB is this:

242 Sqn Hurricane, based at RAF Duxford, August 1940. This is P2831 'LE-K' flown by SubLt. RJ "Dickie" Cork RN,DSO,DSC, allegedly

as Douglas Bader's wingman. Cork achieved ace status during the battle, and went on to involvement in Operation Pedestal, the supply convoy

to Malta, where he achieved "ace in a day" by shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in one day. He remains the only Royal Naval pilot to do this.

He later commanded a Carrier Air Group in the Indian Ocean, where he was killed in a flying accident in 1944.

Kit is Airfix's "old tool" Hurricane Mk.1, decals by Xtradecal.

Build thread at http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234984665-242-sqn-hurricane-mki-duxford-august-1940/

This concludes my involvement in this Battle of Britain Group Build. I'm all "Battle of Britain"-ed out, and have still to finish

aircraft for a BoBGB elsewhere . . .
