RAF Voyager

Recommended Posts

Now that Paul Parkes has produced decals for the RAF Voyager, I am tempted to build a model of this aircraft. I know that I need to get hold of a Revell A330 kit and modify that but would be pleased if any BMers could advise on the modifications require please.

Thanks,

John

The RAF Voyagers are based on the A330-200 airframe.

The Revell kit is a -300, so the fuselage will need shortening. You'll need to remove 6 frames from the front, and 4 from the rear fuselage - I did this conversion a few years back and it's explained in my thread here:http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234910443-converting-revells-a340-300-into-an-a330-200/?hl=+a330 +etihad

You'll need to source a larger -200 series vertical stabiliser, as well as RR Trent engines, which are both done by Braz and sold by Hannants:

and

http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/BZ4011 (although currently out of stock but I'm sure ebay or the like may help)

There are various 'lumps and bumps' to add too, as well as outboard refuelling pods which are located where the outer engines on the A340 are situated. I'm not sure if these are readily available, but they shouldn't be too tricky to scratch build.

Hi John,

For all the A330 MRTT versions you need to use the later A340-600 style vertical stabiliser: http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/BZ4062

I have some pictures in the Walkaround section: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234945570-airbus-military-a330-multi-role-tanker-transport/

Some more information here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234944785-raf-voyager-update-november-2013/?hl=voyager

The Voyagers are painted BS381C: 637 Medium Sea Grey overall with the fuselage 'transport flash' and 'Royal Air Force' titles in FS 36173 grey.

HTH,

Jonathan

Chaps - many thanks for all the useful info about mods to the A330 kit to do an RAF Voyager which have been most helpful. I now have an A330 kit and the Braz conversions on their way to me. Another question - does anybody have info on the size of the underwing refuelling pods please as it looks as though I may have to make those.

Many thanks,

John

Thanks Trojan Thunder,

Who makes these tanks and where can you get them from please?

John

There was a couple of limited releases from a back yard company called Hamilton Hobbies here in Australia, He does not have a website. He advertises his new releases over on the Aussie Modeller Forums. He has not been active for some time since his day job is with the local state government.

That is all I can tell you. AS you can see they are not perfect and need some work to refine them.

Perhaps you can scratch build them? There are a lot of pictures of the pods around the net theses days.

Thanks Ray,Could you send me measurements of the pods please - length etc? Thanks,John

The Royal Air Force are scheduled to display a Voyager in the static park at Royal International Air Tattoo in July if you need any specific photographs.

Sorry if I'm going slightly off topic, do 32 (The Royal) Squadron's grey BAe 146s use the same colour scheme? Now Paul has given us the Voyager markings, I think this is now the only example of the RAF's current fixed wing transport fleet that isn't available in kit/decal form.

HI Richard - you can use the Revell 146/Rj kits as a base plus the Air Decal sheets to the earlier marking of 32 Sqdn.
