BoB summer inspiration, Bf110 Haifisch Zerstörer

Recommended Posts

Hello!

As summer reading I've laid my hands on Slaget om England, Christer Bergströms latest book on the Battle of Britain

(To be published in english during 2015 http://www.bergstrombooks.se/battleofbritain.htm )

He seems to be of the opinion that the Bf110 wasn't that rubbish, just used the wrong way. Escorting bombers instead of fighter sweeps (over middle and north of england) is not the way to go.

Anyway, I thought about the Bf110, looked at my stash and decided that i needed a small simple build, so naturally the complex Eduard is out. I can only manage one complex build per year or something of that effect.

But I do have this:

P1030863_zpsaomguano.jpg

All the parts for a C is there, and with a little help from a friend i also got hold of the Italeri decals for M8+CP

P1030868_zpsg4deqlpr.jpg

You can tell that this is from a different subcontractor than what Airfix is using now.

The plastic is harder, the panel lines wider, but the mold separation lines are smaller. I can only imagine how the 1/24 Typhoon would've looked coming from this supplier instead!

A slight case of wing warping was noted

P1030866_zpsinr2nkka.jpg

Boilding water, and brute force clamping took care of that

P1030872_zpsuipabsus.jpg

Then I started with the cockpit

P1030873_zpsbhtwpwqo.jpg

And main lading gear

P1030874_zpsbjfdtud0.jpg

Landing gear is quite detailed, but the cockpit is very plain. I'll add some strips ans wires there to make it look a little more busy. In worst case, I can always count on the thick greenhouse canopy to hide the worst :)

That's another one added to the bench, and no one rescued from the shelf of doom:

Hi Christer,

As you have noted, the Bf110 is not Airfix's 'Finest Hour' by some distance, but it does go together well and when finished it does look pretty good... however I would not choose it over the Eduard kit, especially since the Weekend edition is around the same price as the Airfix kit.

I think the M8+CP of II/ZG76 is one of the options for the original Airfix 110C boxing as well. If you fancied a mottled one, the U8+GL markings are BoB-era too... :D

Cheers,

Stew

Hi Stew!

("finest hour"? I guess I need to follow the theme though and through. Where's my much-needed book on Churchill speeches?)

Well, the Eduard BF110C in my stash is in 1/48, and it's glorious! But way to big undertaking for a simple summer project :)

The reason for Airfix is that I had it, and the stash could do with some thinning by finishing stuff instead of selling them off, or halfway complete them....

No mottling for me this time, I'll save that for when I've mastered the new airbrush!

I'll certainly be following this with interest. I have also Eduard and Airfix versions but both in 1/72. The plan is to build the Airfix one first as I'm bound to make a few mistakes before moving onto the Eduard and hopefully do a better job.

You could almost turn the shelf of doom into a boneyard diorama ;)

I made the other boxing of this kit a couple of years ago. Although this kit has many shortcomings, I have to say I found it a joy to build - a great fun little kit. The stabilizers needed a bit of sanding from what I remember, but apart from that it fell together. Have fun :)

It does lack in detail but the c boxing I got went together very well. it was my 3rd completed model and enjoyed it! Your plastic look a completely different colour to mine? Mine was the normal soft grey stuff you get?

That said i would love to have a go at the Eduard kit as it looks amazing... I look forward to seeing your 1/48 in the GB

Cheers

Rob

Yeah, I plan to learn the 110-shape so to say, before moving on to the larger one, whenever that will happen :)

I recently cleaned out quite a few objects from this shelf, but I still have lots of confidence in completing the ones that are left!

Yes I will! The fit of the major parts seems to be very good at least, so hopefully I will not use up that much Perfect Plastic Putty on it...

Regarding the plastic, both the Spitfire MkIX and Canberra B(i)8 (the 1/72 versions) that I've built are made in this hard grey plastic, and Seafire XVII and Spitfire XII too (in 1/48). I think they switched suppliers somewhere around the 1/72 Spitfire MkI, because the rest in my stash is in the light blue-grey color.

Well, the GB will have to wait for me. This little BF110 is just a mojo restorer before heading back into that rather intimidating 1/24 Typhoon...

Well...my 1/72 Typhoon kind of stalled too...but that was probably due some decal misshap. It will get some attention again, I'm sure.

Back to the Bf 110 the. Since the fuselage halves are kind of bare, I decided to decorate i a little with some plastic strips and lead wire.

Coated with Vallejo blacket primer it didn't turn out half bad.
P1030875_zpspekmtkjd.jpg
And the tub still fits!

Nice.

Since i just got my grubby hands on a spiffy ny Iwata HP-C+ i just had to try some Xtracrylix RLM02
P1030879_zps50qwdpnw.jpg
P1030876_zpsycnvvo6t.jpg
Works like a charm(*)

Lets see if I can play house with the office chairs and so on for the next update

(* yeah, Xtracrylix is not exactly easy to spray, but the new aribrush is better at it than my old one. Still not an easy paint as Tamiya acrylics...)

Nice I built this some years ago and I love this kit it falls together and looks pretty good my only issue is the kit decals which you aren't using I ended up slicing the kit ones with a scalpel to get them to conform

Thanks!

I must say that this kit grows on me more and more.

It might not be the best BF110C, but it builds very nice! And one doesn't have to scrape mold splitlines forever either (just spent an evening scraping Hispano cannons for my 1/24 Typhoon...)

A wash a some yellow paint and the body halves look a little more interesting.
20150625_165916_zpst80oy8c5.jpg

The gunners seat looks a little boring
20150625_113707_zpspghufszd.jpg
According to Eduards 1/48 kit he should have some kind of cushion
20150625_113822_zpsaemqjnh8.jpg
I then decided to do one myself with some sheet plastic. the plan was to make ringformed depressions to give more texture to it.
20150625_165932_zpsdk1oszqb.jpg
Result is maybe not convincing, and it hardly shows unless the lighting is right but I know it's there at least.

Now I really need to start making some belts I think!

Thanks Houston!

I'm having a small vacation this weekend so there will be no updates for a while.

Also, next weekend there will be a little airshow close by.

What show?

Well... Swedish Airforce makes one show each year, and this is the one. Lots of Gripens in the air,, and off course Swedish Air Force Historic Flight with the only flying Viggen, Tunnan and Draken in the world! Lets hope for best possible weather!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it's summertime, and a few more days of work before vacation starts. Not much time have been spent modelling though.

There has been some progress made on the seatbelts.
20150707_202934_zpsidnjifex.jpg
Tiny tiny pieces of tamiya-tape has been added. Thinking of adding the buckles to the pilots seat, just to make it more interesting.

I'm secretly hoping that the weather stays rainy, so that I can spend lots of time in the modelling den...

Did I mention that the Airshow was AWESOME?

Here are a few more pictures

Time to get cracking on tis little kit then!

I decided that it was enough work in the office and started to mate everything together.
20150717_174755_zpsjrlmrnfa.jpg
Tub completed and a flory-wash later and it was joined to the fuselage.
20150717_175212_zpsf9icfyi8.jpg
20150717_175221_zpsxurwuham.jpg
Fit is quite ok, but not filler free.
20150717_181126_zpsoxcocam6.jpg
I fixed the nosecone and engine covers in place with Gator Grip. That way I can loosen them later for attaching MG17:s,exhausts and propellers without resorting to masking them.
20150719_091840_zpsya6um55f.jpg
I wonder how the left wing should look? The openings in the leading edger are for all tropical stuff, but I guess the other parts must be there somewhere. Anyone who's got a clue to what part numbers to use?

Starting to think that the Bf110 is a really sleek and beatiful machine. I probably need to do a Mossie efter this to get my Anglophilia back in order (or finish up a few typhoons...)

Thanks Martin!
I had some spare time yesterday, so I decided it was about time to test Eduard Masks. I've never used them before but I've bought quite a few of them...
Probably a good idea to start on this one before heading out into deeper more expensive waters.
20150719_195535_zpspbagxqov.jpg
25 minutes later and I was halfway
20150719_202538_zps71qtbubd.jpg
It was dead easy! From now on, masks will be close to a must for anything with a slightly complicated framework!

It only took about 45 minutes to attach all of them, and they appear to work too!
20150720_170821_zps1wpjrspa.jpg
Time to check all seams one more time, because otherwise one might start preshading a little too soon

Pre-shade take two:
20150721_094507_zpsukatc68x.jpg
20150721_094524_zpsy7wzvtyp.jpg

Usually my pre-shading attempts follow the panel lines, but this time I'm testing to break up the underside color differently. If this turns out tatty looking , then I'm happy!
Too bad that my Gunze RLM65 had dried in the pot, and glued the lid shut. Nothing to do but mix one part white to one part Tamiya XF-23.

That makes a very light blue grey color, compared to the extremely blue RLM65 that Xtracrylix has. I wonder which one is the closest match?

20150721_132124_zps1wtyd4ik.jpg
Unfortunately, my samsung camera isn't quite up to showing the nuances that I got from it :-(

Oh well, I take comfort in the fact that I painted the undersida with Tamiya and not Gunze, which means that I can mask it a lot sooner!

Until then, cheers!

Some Gunze RLM71 was shot.

A few pictures of that while it dries could be interesting I hope?

I probably need to use a better camera to show the effect of the preshading better...

Oh well, it's there atleast.

Well, it was time to tape the top camouflage...
P1030917_zpsae3qdpnu.jpg

I'm more and more converting to Gunze these days, so thats the brand of my RLM71
P1030918_zpsex2enpmc.jpg
I was lucky in getting a perfectly thinned Gunze, which was awesome to spray! New Iwata airbrush probably helped that feeling along further...
Since the pre-shade more or less disappeared under the paint, i decided to add some light gray the blck green and just sprayed it randomly.
P1030919_zpssxixiznq.jpg
In wet condition the contrast was bigger, thats for sure, but a clearcoat migh bring it back?

We'll see.

But I guess nobody is interested in waiting for me to remove all tape?
Here you go!
P1030920_zps4u5bqh7x.jpg
P1030921_zpsirrkc9ec.jpg
A few touch ups required here and there, but nothing major.

I starting to feel confident that it can be finished before the end of summer!

Wih two more weeks of vacation, it might be possible too :-)
