I had to do something to compensate for the troublesome decals, so I decided to add some more detail Cheers Jaime
jrlx
Hi again. Continuing with the WIP thread update. With all decals applyed, I coated the model and all small parts with Alclad Aqua Gloss in preparation for the weathering phases. After letting things dry for a day or two, I started the weathering with washes. Here's the set-up for that: IMAG6002 First, I applied a grey wash: IMAG6004 After a few minutes of dry time, I removed most of the wash with damp cotton buds. The panel lines were also enhanced with the same grey wash applied with a fine brush: IMAG6021 I kept the area behind the serial numbers dirtier, as could be seen in pictures of operational aircraft: IMAG6022 Here's a top view, after grey wash and panel line enhancement: IMAG6023 I also applied a grey wash to the missiles. Here are the results for the AIM-7s: IMAG6005 ...and for the AIM-9s IMAG6006 The same grey wash and panel line enhancement produced the following results on the "horizontal" stabilisers: IMAG6029 IMAG6034 Next, I applied a brown wash but limited to the landind gear, wheel wells and well doors, and also to the underside aft of the serial numbers. Here the wash has just been applied to the underside and the excess still needs to be cleaned: IMAG6024 After cleaning the excess, this was the result: IMAG6027 Detail of the nose wheel well after applying the brown wash: IMAG6025 Detail of one of the main gear wells: IMAG6026 The brown wash was also applied to the exhaust area: IMAG6028 The main gear wheels also got a bit of brown wash. Here the top one is still clean while the bottom one is already dirty: IMAG6030 The wheel well doors after application of the brown wash: IMAG6031 Main gear legs: the one on the left is still clean for comparison IMAG6032 The nose gear leg already dirty: IMAG6033 Finally, I also applied the brown wash to the inboard sides of the external fuel tanks: IMAG6034 Weathering with washes was completed. It was time to seal everything with the finishing coat of varnish. It seems these aircraft were glossy when brand new and progressively became semi-matte or matte in time. I opted for a semi-mate finish. However, first I had to protect the metallic areas of the aircraft. This was done on the exhaust area: IMAG6035 On the "horizontal" stabilisers: IMAG6037 And also on the oleos of the gear legs (but didn't take a picture). With the masking in place, I coated the model and all small parts with Alclad Semi-Mate Kote. Since I was with the airbrush in hand and had noticed that the exhausts in aircraft pictures were not as dark as the Alclad Jet Exhaust I had used, I decided to paint them Alclad Burnt Iron. The following picture shows the left exhaust already painted Burnt Iron while the other is still painted Jet Exhaust: IMAG6038 Finally, I removed all the masking and this is how the model looked like: IMAG6039 IMAG6040 Thanks for looking. More to follow. Jaime

giemme
Looking very effective after the weathering For some reason, I thought this kit had the airbrakes that could be posed open - turns out I was wrong (nothing new... ) Ciao

There's an updated tooling of this kit with separate airbrakes. I have two of those for building the Alcock and Brown scheme and for an operational RAF machine with shark teeth. jrlx
Hi again, After removing the masking, I noticed some problems on the wind-shield. First, paint had accumulated along the masking tape edges: IMAG6041 On the other side of the wind-shield, glue had spread under the masking tape and also inside between the transparent part and the instrument panel cover, marring the transparency. I had to sand and polish it with my set of micromesh pads. Unfortunately, I couldn't repair the inside surface (unless I unglued the transparent part, which I decided not to do). In the end I got this, still with some damage inside: IMAG6042 Next, I removed the excess paint along the wind-shield and repaired the join with PPP: IMAG6043 This was later repainted by brush with thin layers of paint. Next I moved to the tail area and installed the exhausts: IMAG6044 and the stabilisers: IMAG6045 IMAG6046 The AIM-7s followed suit: IMAG6047 Next, I installed the nose gear and doors: IMAG6048 IMAG6049 and also the main gear parts: IMAG6050 IMAG6051 The AIM-9s were glued to the pylons: IMAG6052 The canopies were unmasked: IMAG6053 Since the masking was on for more than 3 years, the Aqua Gloss coat was a bit damaged by the removal of the tape as well as the paint along the edges of the frames. This was repaired later by painting and another application of Aqua Gloss by brush. Before that, I glued in place the PE canopy latches and rear view mirrors. Some trimming to the length of the latches was needed: IMAG6054 IMAG6055 The remaining PE detail was applied, with trimming done where required: IMAG6056 IMAG6057 IMAG6058 Another area needing some attention was the tail fin: the pitot tube was painted silver and I masked around the area where there was a position red light which needed to be painted: IMAG6063 The position light was painted with transparent red: IMAG6064 I also painted the AoA probe silver: IMAG6065 There was some weathering still to be done. First, I applied black pigments on the exhaust area. Here's the set-up: IMAG6066 And the results: IMAG6067 IMAG6069 IMAG6070 The last weathering step was dry brushing Extra Dark Sea Grey on the canopy latches: IMAG6071 To finish with, there were a few remaining tasks. The wind-shield central pane was painted transparent blue (thin layer of diluted paint, applied by brush): IMAG6072 The navigation lights on the tips of the wings were painted with transparent red on the port side: IMAG6074 ... and transparent green on the starboard side: IMAG6075 Next, I glued the external tanks and pylons with attached AIM-9s in place: IMAG6076 IMAG6077 The ejection seats were installed in the cockpit: IMAG6078 IMAG6079 The covers of the auxiliary air intakes were glued in the open position: IMAG6080 IMAG6081 Very last act was glueing the canopies in the open position: IMAG6082 IMAG6083 Due to the damages caused by the masking tape, in the end I didn't manage to achieve a good transparency of the canopies. For that, I would have to completely remove the Aqua Gloss coat with alcohol (risking damaging the paint) before reapplying Aqua Gloss, which I didn't do. So, after more that 3 years after starting this build, here is the final result: IMAG6084 IMAG6085 I'll post better pictures of the finished model later in a RFI post. Thank you very much for all support and interest. A special thanks to @Troffa for sending me his spare decals, which allowed me to replace the damaged tail fin decals e carry on with the build. Cheers Jaime EDIT: the RFI post can be found here Edited November 13, 2018 by jrlx 14

SleeperService
WOW!! That has come out rather nicely, well worth the fight iMHO. I like the restrained weathering very much. A real masterclass in rectification and patience. If I had a hat on I'd doff it to you.
jrlx
Thank you very much gents! Much appreciated Considering all the troubles I had with the decals, I'm rather pleased with the end result. The kit itself is very nice. giemme
Your fight with the decals certainly doesn't show on the end result And you r final additions worked a treat! On a very minor note, I think you know that the windshield isn't actually tinted on the real aircraft - it's just a reflex coming from the double glass; the brushed on clear blue looks a tad too stark, IMHO Ciao 1

I didn't know that. I'll take it into account in future Phantom builds (I still have two RAF ones under construction and several Hasegawa, Revell and Fujimi in the stash). jrlx
Hi Paul ( @mcdonnell)! It's great hearing from you and thank you very much for the extremely kind words, as usual! I also bought recently Airfix's Royal Navy Phantom boxing and expect to build it some time in the future, to compare it to the Fujimi kit. As it comes with many build options, I'll do it with wing-tips up, the radome open to show the radar and whatever else is allowed by the kit Cheers Jaime

Jaime, I'll certainly be looking forward to your comparison, but frankly, you've shown me that in MANY areas, the "old" Fujimi kit outshines the short-changed Airfix kit (with due respect for your masterful building skills). Just out of curiosity, in which aspects do you think Fujimi's kit is better than Airfix's? I still haven't analysed Airfix's in detail, just took a look at the instructions. The plastic is still in the bag. Cheers Jaime
