About Mustang P-51 D and HVAR

Hi!

I have very simple question:

My Chuck Yeager's P-51D Tamiya Mustang is almost done, and, because I have nice Eduard's Hvar rockets

will I make big mistake if I put them under wings of Glamorous Glen III? Is it possible that mr. Yeager never

was in ground attack mission? I can't find any photo where some Mustang from 357 f.g. cary even wing pylons

for Hvar!

Or I'm blind?

Thank You in advance!

 I don't believe he ever used rockets based on my reading of his biography. He was Eight Air Force, not Ninth. He did plenty of ground attack but guns only.

You could fit them of course but remember he's still alive and really quite litigious when it comes to the right to use of Glamourous Glennis. He might sue you for misrepresenting his aircraft. :fight::winkgrin:

I don't recall reading about the 357th doing any rocket attacks, even 8th AF P-47's hardly ever used rockets. I agree with the above, they would have been mostly shooting up ground targets with their remaining bullets on the way back from bomber escort missions. When the 56th FG did specific ground attack with their P-47's, they mostly used 500lb bombs, so I would expect Mustangs would have used bombs rather than rockets, should they have undertaken specific ground attack missions too.

thanks

Mike

Actually further to my point above. He has a Facebook page and he does answer questions. Or at least someone representing him answers questions. Why not ask the man himself?

I think so too, at least one decal manufacturer had to scramble the Glamorous Glennis title on their sheet.

No doubt she has a large input into the website and FB page too. But he does seem to answer questions. It's great he's still around to do that.

Do you mean the triple bazooka tubes or the HVARS mount to the stubs under the wings?

Bazooka tubes i've seen wartime images of 8th AF P-38 and P-47's fitted with them post D-Day....but no P-51's....never say never however.

HVARS only became available on P-51D-25 and P-51K-10's from the factory,Again i've only ever seen a handful of images of 8thAF p-51's fitted with the rails, most late production Mustang's that had them seem to removed them once they got to there Sqn's.....I presume because most Sqn didn't have HVAR's and they created drag.

Yeager's P-51D's were D-5 and D-10 versions so wouldn't have HVAR's.

This is one of only 2 or 3 8thAF P-51's i know carried HVAR rails P-51D-25 44-73144 Col Kinnard 355th FG CO April/May 1945

Rockets was not used in the ETO - only the PTO.

Some 44-73-series P-51D's was however sent to Europe equipped to carry rockets, but only carried the launcher stubs under the wings as in the photo of 44-73144 above. They never carried rockets though.

Hi again!

Noelh, Mikemx, Don McIntyre, Mungo, Boman, thank's for information - I will listen yours advices and I will not armed

my Mustang with Hvars. Problem was that I already drill the holes in the wings before I glued them together. And model

is allready painted and decals are on places.

My son who have Facebook account tried to contact mr. Yeager but he didn't get any answer, and unfortunately I can't

wait forever to finish Chuck's leady!

But I allready close the holes very sucsesfully, and even with the glasses (which I need for reading - and modeling) You can't

see anything but nice flat wing (with putied and sended panel lines - I hope that I didn't made mistake with that).

Now, I hope that my model of this beautyfull plane will be finished in a few days, and I will show him in display case!

Thank's again!
