What's Airfix Announcing Tommorrow?

" International orders will be charged at our standard international delivery rates"

That puts me (and probably most of the non UK modelling world) out I would say !!

I cannot understand why someone like Hattons charge GBP 5.00, when for the same product Airfix will quote you GBP30.00.

This Kitstarter sounds like a novel idea, however it's hard to enter with a pre-order when you gonna get stung badly by postage costs.

Rant over... Dave.

I find it curious that Airfix are saying that they have cleaned up these tools and readied them for production, without having made any commitment to produce them. That may not have been a huge investment, but it was at least some money spent to what may be no purpose. I like the Kickstarter principle, not that there are any I'm particularly longing to see again, but wouldn't it seem logical and economically sensible to carry out the market survey before committing resources?

Don't forget the tools were all in France at the Heller factory, they brought them back over to Margate but after years of abuse they all had to be catalogued and probably needed some TLC before they could be stored correctly again or risk loosing them. Some they are re-issuing such as the airliners this last year or so, some are being replaced by the new tools (anybody likely to request the old Beau ?) and it appears they have a local production facility available to allow for smaller runs of some of these old tools without having to formally re-issue them.

Sounds a great idea to me, making use of assets, driven by the public via crowdfunding, so they only produce to order and don't get stuck with excess levels of less popular kits left on the shelf. It also opens up the opportunity for the aftermarket guys to get a small run of OOP kits done to go with their conversions or museums to do specials of their exhibits.

Basset. and the dinosaurs

Aren't they headlining at Glastonbury this year?

Trevor

ps I like the thought of the motorcycles being re popped and would consider one for the Made in Britain Group build being proposed.

No clues as to costs or how many they need.

I assume they can short run the decals again - those birds don't have any.

I liked their 54mm kits and the up scaled Skinner's Horse and French imperial guard - also don't need decals.

For the rest - they are re-issuing kits already, and whilst I wouldn't mind the 1/48th Bucc being available again I would rather it was a new version.

If this doesn't distract them from generating new kits then I suppose it's OK. If it enables them to bring production back to the UK and increase their quality then even better.

And today I create a new term for the kickstarter style re-release of old models. ePopped! ^_^ Typical usage being "Oh, I see that Airfix are ePopping their 1:600 HMS Fearless". :)

I'd definitely go for a Basset. One of the ones used for ferrying V-Bomber crews around. It would look interesting next to a big white Vulcan. I'd also go for the Scout. I see the Sea Fury has appeared on the forum but wasn't this the PM mould? I believe that after the passing of the owner his family decided to destroy the moulds.

Basset. and the dinosaurs

The bird kits were moulded for the Japanese amrket not that long ago (Maybe 10 years)

My sister built some blue tits when she was around 10-12, so they must be older than that... unless they've been re-tooled?

The latest from the forum is this:

Hi Geoff and Brian,

KitStarter is a completely new concept and we are currently in the first stage of testing the moulds in the archive. Unfortunately as the cleaning and testing is quite a lengthy process we haven't been able to compile a full list of the tools that are available. While we will continue to clean and test all the moulds we can, those that are widely requested here on the Forum will be bumped up the list.

As and when we have cleaned and tested tools that have been widely discussed here on the Forum we will be sure to share that information.

I'm going to shut this one down in favour of the new more aptly titled thread that's been started in light of the announcement. I still think my ePopping is a better title that KitStarter, but I'm not bitter :crying:
