momo88
Evening all, I'm waiting for the delivery of this kit and I can't wait to start on it. There are already a few on here so have a couple of threads to use as reference. I'm planning on powering the propellors by 4off airfix 1/24 motors. I think MH on here may try to help me out in another option so that would be great too. I was looking to see if anyone could tell me which of the tamiya acrylic paints I could use for the fuselage. I was thinking xf-19 sky grey Then x-1 black for the nose. But unsure of the dark grey on the top of the fuselage. Lastly, I really want to have a tank or piece of armour coming out of the back of the grizzly. Would anyone have a suggestion please? Thanks Edited May 18, 2015 by momo88

philp
Are you doing it up in English markings? If so, a Warrior coming out the tail might work out. http://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/2012/09/the-airbus-a400m-atlas-part-2-what-is-so-good-about-it-anyway/ Revell makes a nice kit. Aeronut
Are you doing it up in English markings? If so, a Warrior coming out the tail might work out. But not an up armoured Warrior as that would be overweight for the aircraft's 37 tonne max load.

Nigel Foster60
I am looking forward to following this build as I might do one myself. I first saw a real one in 2011 and have found it an interesting aircraft ever since. Maybe we should change this section's name to " watch before you buy". momo88
Oh, I'll have a look at the warrior Thanks. I've pm'd someone about raf markings so hopefully they can sort me out. Otherwise I'm not exactly sure which or the 3 options I'll go for. Probably the Airbus prototype markings.
momo88
Well my model arrived today but after having a look through the sprues I have noticed some issues. I believe there are a couple of notches out of the wings and some dings on 4 of the nacelle halfs. Could someone confirm wether or not my assumptions are correct? Could someone tell me how good revell are with replacing these parts? It was a gift bought for me so don't want to have to go through them to sort this out to be honest. The notches are on the trailing edge... Here are 3 of the 4 nacelles the 4th isn't that bad but these are clearly dinged. Hope someone could tell me all is well, but I don't think it is
gregax
Just sinkmarks, nothing to worry here. Some mr. surfacer 500 will sort that out.
momo88
Sinkmarks on the nacelle halfs? Ok I could probably sort that but what about the notches out of the wings? Would mr surfacer sort that out too? I'd assume I'd have to use some sort of backing to paint the mr surfacer on to i.e. plasticard?
Jessica
Do the Dentist thing; chop out a section of trailing edge, put in a supporting tab behind it (in the thicker portion of the wing), glue in a piece of plastic card, and then sand to shape once the glue is set.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Issue look minor to me, once you have the wings glued there will be plastic under the notch to take the filler. Or as Jessica mentioned make a small cut out and fill it with some plastic card, file and sand to shape. I have 2 of these kits, and don't recall these issues. It might be the previous owner just pulled the sprues stubs off the trailing edges of the wins rather than cutting them off. Also as regards to the darker grey on the top of the wings, are you referring to the walkway area down the centre of the fuselage? Have you checked the decal sheet, it may be supplied. momo88
Yeah thanks guys, I think I will go with just filling in the notch with the bottom part of the wing at attached. Yeah, the walkway area down the center of the fuselage. It's not on the decal sheet though! Edited May 20, 2015 by momo88
Madhatter
sorry to see you have some minor quality issues with your kit. I also had the sink marks but not the chunks out of the wing. Still it's an easy fix as highlighted by Jessica. As for your motors, I am still trying to get onto my mate from the hobby shop - I've text him again to chase it up, so hopefully, I'll have an answer for you soon I lit mine with pre-wired SMD's: 9 on each side and it worked well. Lit to scale as well Once I get home, I'll PM you a link to where I get them from MH

I would be adding a touch of black to the base colour to get that darker grey area, some masking required I am afraid. sorry to see you have some minor quality issues with your kit. momo88
So I have started the A400M, been working away at it, not loads of pictures but I have a few. First of all, a picture of all sprues, plenty of bits and pieces Again, the first issue I had was the notches in the wings, I used Mr Surfacer to tidy it up, after a couple of coats with a bit of balsa undeneath... Some work on the cockpit area, not exactly to the paint call-outs but I like it My plan is to put this on a desert styled base. I've put some sand on the floor of the cargo bay and will have some on the folded out ramp I have put 2 leds within the cargo bay, I was going to make some holes in some balsa wood and light it up like another A400M I have seen on here but I am happy with the way this has turned out. I have fed the wires through thr roof of the cargo bay and through the "square" at the bottom right of the back wall. I had cut it out and will cover it with some painted blu tac.Testing... I have had to modify the TP400 engines by cutting out the combustion chambers to allow for the 1/24 scale airfix motors. You can still see the air intake through the from of the nacelle, as well as the turbine rotor at the rear, After a couple of coats of mr surfacer and a bit of sanding... Engines and wheels on... Quick coat of primer to see what and where needs some filler and sanding. Unfortunately, I realised that I had glued the top part of the rear opening. I hope I can use the blade to open it back up, otherwise I don't think you will be able to see much inside with the ramp down. Hopefully get that sorted and get some sanding done so I can get some paint on it!
momo88
I couldn't resist trying to sort out that opening at the back and fortunately, I got it sorted! here is a picture with the lights on. Will try and get a video of the props working soon. Any comments are welcome

Gimme Shelter
Hi I cant remember if it was Scale Aircraft Modelling or Airfix Magazine that did a fairly good build review on this kit a while back which might help your build. If you want a copy, try contacting SAM Publications who should be able to help with a back-issue. I would send you mine for free but my wife tends to chuck my old copies out now as I have almost filled the loft with old magazines Good luck with the build - as others have said, the damage is minimal really when you consider the amount of potential filling and sanding other areas of the kit will/has required. I look forward to seeing yours built, as much I do as seeing the real thing in the skies for a first
