Soyuz Launch Pad in Baikonur [LVM Studio 1:144 scale]

… Continued after another long intermission:

My aim is now to add a small platform which isn’t in the kit (probably added later in the real stuff) and which support some sort of air-conditioning device (pumps, exchanger and flexible hoses)

The platform:

Building the platform out of plastic card and beams:

For the top anti-skidding plate I used a double layer of kitchen aluminium foil scribed with a small rivet-tool:

Finished with railing from spare:

Now, the hoses. I wanted to reproduce their crushed surface.

I used Magic Sculpt (1) I formed in cylinders (2) and then calibrated to 2mm in diameter (3). I rolled theses cylinders on talc covered, creased double aluminium foil layer (4) and formed the parts to desired shape before curing (5)

The heat exchanger is made of Evergreen plastic:

A loooong step now: fitting numerous cables to those structures. Cables are white covered, about .2 to .4mm in diameter.

I used .3mm brass wire and copper wires from a small multi thread electronic cable.

After a slight sanding, wires are painted off-white (Humbrol gloss enamel, more flexible than acrylics in this case), cut to lengths, bent and glued.

The first stage umbilical mast:

The second stage large umbilical mast. Note small canvas covers from aluminium foil.

And the two towers finished:

… continued

Now it’s time for the general assembly for all these parts:

First a dry fitting of the two towers. After trials I decided to show the diorama during removal of the service towers as to highlight the launcher with contrasting colours:

Making the four huge tower actuators:

The towers are secured in their final configuration:

Making the launch arms and tower actuators

Another (last) detailing step: adding electrical boxes and cable connexions at the base of each tower:

I added fourteen worker figures. These are modified Bundeswehr pilots from Preiser.

I replaced helmets and caps with worker helmets made of Magic Sculpt. Some clothing were modified the same way.

ET VOILA ! After two years of work this assembly is finished !

Thank you for your kind comments.

I've been informed this afternoon this model has just won a gold medal (real spacecraft section) in the Telford Scale Model Show.

And it has been elected the Best of Show for 2015.

A big thank to Leon of LVM Studio, who designed this awesome kit.
