'Memphis Belle' B-17f Revell 1/72 (Pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

You made the right decision Ced, nobody has a steady hand for long enough to cover that sort of distance and it's not an interesting enough job to want to do more than once :D

Excellent work mate, I'll look forward to tomorrow's report...

Cheers,

Stew

I HATE doing de-incing boots, but think I may use your method and brush-paint them on for the future. You are truly wise and powerful, Ced.

Thanks Stew and PC - glad I've done the right thing, even though it took me a while to get started*.

Looking at the 'to do' list I decided to give Belle her Klear coat so it could dry overnight so she'll be ready for the transfers in the morning.

Nice work there Ced, I thought I might be putting the gloss and decals on my Ar 555 in the morning but with my paint issues that now looks unlikely. I also have a lawn to mow.

Cheers,

Nigel

Thanks Nigel (and I hope you get your paint sorted - I'm sure you will) :)

Today's job, starting soon:

6D007DAA-C76E-4D15-9214-4380053B2D02_zps

Lots of transfers. They're not all for Belle's scheme, but there's still a lot. Notice my usual lazy approach - I'll leave the masking on so I don't have to re-do it for the Matt coat. And after that I'll tear it off and fit the other bits.

I don't think I've mentioned this before but Belle has two escorts:

9EE39384-7A7A-48D4-B6B9-BB073A082C93_zps

(I know this probably never happened but it's my ceiling, so there.) They've been patiently waiting in this box for Belle and one of them needs its transfers too. I bought these to try NMF for my Lightning. Left hand = Alclad on an Airfix, Right hand AK True Metal on a Tamiya.

Right, time to get some warm water. I may be gone some time.

You're correct, as the 332nd FG was with the 15th Air Force in Italy, rather than the 8th Air Force in the UK with the Belle. But my word do those Mustangs look nice. It really was lucky, for marketing purposes, that the 332nd had those solid red tails, wasn't it? The 31st FG (my favourite USAAF fighter group) had rather garish red candy stripes. "The Candy Stripers" wouldn't play as well, I daresay.

Love the finish on these, particularly the Alclad/Airfix variant. There are a lot of P-51s in my stash and I need to conquer my fear of airbrushing, since I doubt I could achieve similar results from a rattlecan.

A dish of warm water and some transfers are next on my agenda too.

Thanks PC - I'm calling it 'poetic licence' :)

Thanks Jon - nice link, nice 'stang and my, that 'Sundown' is a pretty girl isn't she? I am easily confused by avatars... If you want to use Alclad you need an AB, and a mask, and a spray booth. I like the AK finish as it's a bit 'dirtier'. Rattle can H11 on my Vamp was good too. But the Alclad is smoooottthhhh. :)

I am typing this because I need some coffee and a 'vape' due to Revell. They are the devil incarnate. It's bad enough giving me a sheet full of things that I can hardly can't read, but spot the 'deliberate mistake':

E80920A5-3EEC-43CB-9139-B838BB78DA8C_zps2F7F2783-9AEA-4AB0-AC1D-E361290CEDD6_zps

Now, I know that Belle is American and that the US spell things differently sometimes, but even I know they don't spell 'No Step' as 'Glycol'. Of course I'd carefully applied the tiny thing before I noticed. I then myopically searched the sheet and found a yellow 'No Step' (#77) and stuck that on. My iPhone won't focus but here's the ball turret finished:

969ADBFC-C499-48EE-A540-032CB3B031DA_zps

Luckily there are no #43 stencils on Belle that I can see (yes, I know, but I've looked several times) so I hope that's the last problem. I'm using Stew's 'pointy brush for stencils' tip and that's helping a lot (thanks Stew) but it doesn't help holding the small part in one hand*, picking up the transfer in the other hand and then using your other hand to brush the stencil on. I did hold the brush in my teeth but that was not a huge success. Picking up the stencil with very pointy tweezers seems to be the method.

When I've stopped growling, I'll do the rest.

* Oi! That doesn't get a score, I do not have a small part, fnaar fnaar

Just caught up with your Belle Ced and it's looking great. I made a start on the F model last year with the plan to do Shamrock Special, but stalled to do other things, but this is giving me the inspiration to dig it out again :)

Thanks Stew, your tip for the pointy brush made it a bit less painful :)

Thanks Neil, it is a bit of a trial, but ask me again when I've finished!

Big problem this morning - the 'best laid plan' of temporarily glueing the front windows in so that I could take them out and fit the guns at the end was OK until I came to apply the transfers - the front ones go over the join. Rats. Off with the windows and then problems with the fit (as Andy had with his 'G'). Then loss of confidence that I had the windows in the right way around... nightmare!! Still, all rectified now but I need a lie down :D

I use the "holding the brush in one's teeth" trick a lot, and it's generally served me well, though every now and then I get a mouthful of micro-set as I put the bristles in my mouth by mistake. One thing I do do is that I'll use the brush with decal solution on it to pick up the decal proper, forgoing tweezers, and apply it with that.

Thanks PC, made me LoL :D

Well I've spent almost all of today messing around with the transfers and stencils and they're all on now, as far as I can see. The scheme is not that accurate IMHO, the transfers for the two schemes are mixed up on the sheet and some things are just infuriating, like the transfers on the wheels. Obviously they should be applied before assembly so I just cut one in half and stuck it up the wheel:

D035DD78-B636-4440-904E-5CE9AA89D4C9_zpsACE30B22-3F2A-488F-B21E-2E1D79D2F05A_zps

I'm going to tease you, sorry. Not intentional but Belle's on her back with the bomb doors drying and I forgot to take some pics first:

2FD3C234-2D52-4E0D-8BBB-CCA70E7E766E_zps

I'm going to leave her there while the transfers dry, then fitting the bomb sight, chair, guns and nose prior to the matt coat tomorrow. If all goes well I'll post some shots of that before the RFI - nearly there!

Nice job with the transfers Ced, and I really like how the exhausts turned out.

The P-51's look awesome too, I remember you posting them in the 'paint' section. I still can't decide which finish I like more, it really depends on which photo I'm looking at.

Thanks Cookie and Simon. I couldn't resist taking this one of Belle drying her transfers and waiting for her matt coat tomorrow:

3B450F4D-F3C6-4098-B883-6344AA91FB2C_zps

Nearly there. I've just glued on the props by putting glue in the prop hole, then realised I should have put it on the end of the shaft. Schoolboy error. This will probably mean I won't be able to blow the props now and I'm so disappointed that I haven't even scored myself. :(

Oh well, she'll be on the ceiling soon.

Ced I am caught up now... I would have been sooner but this weekend has been a blur of two parties for one 5 year old in one day (we have renamed her Elizabeth) followed by a raging fever and a trip to my mums... Making up for this by catching up with your on your fantastic work while watching the sun set in front of an open fire with the wife in our garden... Very much a turn around!

Keep it up! And I will start on my second pitcher...

Looking good, I can never get used to seeing a B-17 with two greens on it, when I was younger it

was always green and grey. Quite a surprise when I learnt they came in silver as well,

Looks nice to me Ced. Personally i think the dark green splotches and the wing way markings go a long way toward making this model. The wing walkways especially are one of those things everybody blows off when they do a B-17, and in the end.... something doesn't look quite right.

It definitely evokes fond memories of the original Revell 1964 vintage box art.....

Speaking as a pilot who has to use them in the early AM hours- de ice boots are a good thing.

Thanks Simon - I'm giving up the prop blowing so no need to be worried :D

Thanks Beard - no, honestly, I'm giving it up (but that made me  !)

Hey Rob - hope the second pitcher went down well - lemonade? :)

Thanks Sean - I like the two greens too, especially over the grey control surfaces. Weird scheme though.

Hi David - I've never flown anything with de-icing boots although I had an 'interesting' experience learning to fly multi-engine in a twin Comanche. Not used to uppy undercarriages the first time I flew with snow on the ground the instructor said "Leave the wheels down for a while to let the snow blow off, otherwise the wheels may freeze in the wing" (how did he know that?) "How long do I have to leave them down for?" said I. "Just long enough" was his reply :hmmm:

Thanks Greg and Jaime - wait no longer...

After a final fight with all those guns, they need a final touch up when they're dry and then I'm calling this finished. So, as you're good friends of mine some final WiP shots that I won't be sharing in the RFI...

She's looking good in this one:

F1FE626A-BDBC-4EB0-8A37-89378BC3DC98_zps

Just don't look at the joins on the panels in the nose. I know Andy had problems with these in his 'G' build too and I can't help think that Revell made a mistake using this technique to allow them to swap parts for the variants. They became such a major part of the build for me that I started to think that they should look like separate panels and by the time I came to my senses the transfers were on and it was too late. Ditto too the windows on top of the nose - the orders say to apply four decals for the top windows - someone obviously forgot that they'd already used some painted (or not) clear parts to do two of them.

I'd left the bomb sight out until the last minute (good tip Andy) so I fitted that and refitted the chair that got knocked out while trying to sort out the 'nose hatch', another poor decision from revell IMHO. Then the nose could be fitted with rapid epoxy. Future builders note you should NOT fit the guns until just before you do this as there's not much room in the nose (to say the least!!) and you'll need to wiggle the guns around to get the nose on:

957DE145-3790-471C-9062-5BF6AE8A868C_zpsAA432D62-3B9E-4192-8FFB-A373BA7DCF1C_zps

Reasonably pleased with the framing on the nose and that's Glass n Glaze fixing the guns in so that'll go clear, honest. Also happy with the masking on the top and rear turrets:

1873AED9-84DE-4868-BC9E-C4DCF2DCD44C_zps7A0C9425-CFDD-4871-A4B6-2C6C865EC92D_zps

(What is that 'wart' on the back?) and pretty happy with the waist guns and the ball turret (as long as the guns dry in this location and don't go skewy on me, again):

42DE49A6-F1BC-42DA-BD04-A05B4D50D5D0_zps7C6C5110-BA9D-4543-8689-DEACDC7757C8_zps

NOT HAPPY with the silvering on some of the transfers, even after a Klear coat, MicroSol and a matt coat. From some angles they just shout "Should have used MicroSet as well, nuh nuh, ner ner, nuh":

20748018-FD26-4829-8D28-1D0E40434661_zps

(Even Photobucket didn't want to see that picture. Save, save etc)

Anyway, I'll touch up the guns later and then post an RFI with some carefully angled photos! Glad this one's over actually, bit of a challenge and, unlike the Valloms, not such a pleasing result for all the work. Ho hum.

I'll replace this line with a link to the RFI later (so if you're reading this please be patient).
