'Memphis Belle' B-17f Revell 1/72 (Pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

Oops, sorry Rob.

Stew did you find a foot in mouth emoticon? I think I need it...

Lol you need it not.... I get sensitive about them as I left them to be closer to home but would have rathered be closer to home AND work for them.... There is a cake and eat it thing some where there! Also slightly annoyed by work today as the same lady I have had issue with before (actually she had issue with me) swore at a customer and is now grieving Against me (ME!) for investigating her and taking her to hearing.... I didn't flipping swear at anyone!! I might.

Ced .... I think I just ranted on your thread, nothing to do with you or the b-17 So sorry about that. Actually its normally stew that bears the brunt.... I have some very nice red wine I will be OK now....

Rob

P.s. nice work on the b 17 looks to be a lot more hassle free than the Valoms you have just done to a brilliant standard

I tend to remove the pastry base, eat that the finish off the custard and icing bit together. That way you don't squeeze the custard out all over the place!

Now that is cunning, I just mash them into my face in a frenzy of sugar. (Yes they are my favourite pastry.... Only real men eat millfeuille)

Charlie you are a shining example of 'delayed gratification'. Mrs B is like that, but I don't have the discipline to 'leave the best bit until last'. I'll eat the best bit first and then leave the rest. In the case of the Patisserie Valerie M-F though, every bit is the best bit so I don't have that problem :Tasty:

Rob I've been exposed to some M&S 'food porn' on TV tonight, their 'Easter Specials' (yes, it was a recording). Now I want chocolate delights and it's too late. Oh the humanity! You may be able to tell I've had some nice red wine too...

Time for bed, more Belle in the morning.

No XF-53 pots so I'm going to have to 'decant' some paint from the can for touching up and the blobs on the top surface - tips please?

I have never done this myself but I have seen lots of how to sources - it mainly seams to involve a drinking straw and some cling film plus time to let the paint "degas". Good luck with your efforts.

I also should mention. I thought this looked really good:

OK, time to prepare for the aluminium spray session using Jaime's cocktail stick technique.

CedB, I'm happy to see that my suggestion was of some use but the technique wasn't invented by me. I saw it somewhere, early in my return to the Hobby (not that long ago, in fact it was mid-2014).

Keep on the steady progress

Never decanted paint either. Just looks like it takes too much time. I have a disposable plastic sandwich container (the last one used to hold deli meat) and just spray the paint in much like Stew suggested. I get a puddle and then let it sit just a minute and then paint. Has worked for me for small touch ups.

Thanks Nigel; praise from one of my gurus always puffs my chest up a bit! I think it needs a bit more work, especially on the dials / switches but the rest I may designate 'chipping'.

Thanks Jaime! I'm more than happy to give you credit as 'the one who passed it on to me'. A lot of inventions and techniques get forgotten because people don't pass them on so please keep on posting tips and don't worry about who gets the credit! :)

Now there's an idea, thanks Phil. I'm only going to use a bit of paint for touching up so a quick squirt into a disposable container should do the job.

* Time zones. I know. But I shall continue to use this as a greeting at the start of my day to, hopefully, brighten up your day. Hopefully. IBMers say 'Good morning, good afternoon, good evening' on their International calls and it always sounds a bit trite. Especially if followed by 'whatever'. :)

Just doing a bit more research whilst having my morning cuppa and good news!

I had set myself a sort of target of Sunday (17th May) as THE Film says this was the last flight. Saw this this morning (my 'bolding'):

"The crew of the Memphis Belle beat the odds with their 25th combat mission on May 17, 1943, against the naval yard at Lorient, France. Interestingly, this raid was the Belle's 24th combat mission--the original crew occasionally flew missions on other 91st BG (H) B-17s (and others took the Belle on some missions also). So, on May 19, the Memphis Belle flew its 25th combat mission on a strike against Kiel, Germany, while manned by a different crew."

So my target has moved out by two days. Probably still a bit tight. Also found this:

614px-Memphis_Belle.jpg

which purports to be an image of Belle 'flying home'. It's confirmed my doubts about reference shots as the image date is too recent BUT this "could be the date of the image scan" or when the original photo was re-photographed to digitise - who knows?

Anyway, the point of this is to resolve issues with the Revell instructions. There are several places where there is a choice to make (marked '?') but no guidance on which to choose. This will help. A bit.

'Saturday Live' on the radio iPlayer (what a thoroughly nice programme, love it), nice cup of coffee and progress to report. What more could a man want*.

A good airbrush session, like this one, might be on the list:

E1C2ECDE-C9DE-424F-A143-3E5F6A00EBDD_zps

Now I remember why I like airbrushing so much. Apart from the initial tension when preparing the paint (flow improver and a bit of thinners) it's pretty painless when it goes well. That lot took me probably 10-15 minutes and the results are amazing:

FDF7A47A-66C6-41CA-8A78-C35B738E4A28_zps97160650-327F-4E4A-A406-DD438125A016_zps

Imagine doing that lot with a hairy stick. The only problem was me - newbie error, thinking 'Gosh, that's a lot to do' so I filled the paint cup and, of course, only used a bit:

11403E34-53FC-43EA-9FEA-F9BE1DD8B190_zps

That meant struggling with the Vallejo Model Air pot spout and pouring it back in but hey, good start to the day.

I hope my luck holds out!

* Answer on a postcard please to...

Thanks Jaime! I'm more than happy to give you credit as 'the one who passed it on to me'.

I'm always happy to share my little experience and be of any help to others. :)

Speaking about your work, your metallic finish turned out beautifully! And your objective to finish the model in a few days time is quite ambitious. At my pace I would take months to finish a B-17...

Thanks Jaime - please keep sharing! My target is probably too ambitious as, unfortunately, some things can't be rushed, like interior detail (nice link Ced. Oh, thanks!)

Before we start let me remind you that, as usual, I'm going for a subtle, cared for but ageing look. I think I've achieved that and I am very pleased, but enough about me*, let's do some weathering on the Bombay work on the Belle interior. I started with this:

77A58F4F-BE8C-4CD3-B819-9BD6A8FF438F_zps

A selection of colours, following the instructions. Note the micro-brush for applying the True Metal. As I think I said before I didn't aim for complete coverage on the IG spraying to give my 'worn out look' a start but some bits were a bit, er, not painted. Still, I like a bit of touching up**. Some shots of the pilot area mid-process:

7218B69C-E850-42A9-88F0-7CB69E69B369_zpsF97D7FCB-F2A6-4946-903F-4301BB59FF20_zps

I had a bit of problem with the seat backs until I realised that the supports go under the cross bar and then they fit really well. More details on colours below. I used my Revell precision poly for the first time and now it's fine, but when I first opened the cap it wouldn't stop dribbling (did you notice the blobs on the bottom of the legs and control sticks?). It's great now so probably just excitement on its part. I don't mind a bit of excess glue on the bottom of some parts: Ced's excuse #23, 'dust build up'.

I've also put the first coat on the IP. Like Andy I don't think I'll use the transfer as it's a bit basic and you'd need to cut off the molding detail. First coat of H85:

18322990-34E2-4FDC-8D51-8A4FFBF371F7_zps

blurred photo, sorry, but just for a step by step. The rubbish green will be hidden when this part is glued to the rest. By the time I'd finished (prompted by 'The News Quiz' on Radio 4) I had this lot on my workbench:

9E0B91D2-E093-44ED-9D51-41AC29437069_zps

Notes (with references to the instruction's 'index' of colours):

  • The H135 hasn't been used yet; maybe for some dry brushing on the IP later.
  • H71 used for the seat backs (index colour 'H'); I have no idea what the seats were made from but the 'yellow' suggested in the instructions didn't seem right. I also applied another coat before the first one had dried to give a roughed up the finish. (I'll do some close ups later)
  • Vallejo IG (index colour 'A') and Yellow Olive (used for index colour 'O') for touching up
  • H56 not used. I used AK True Metal with a micro-brush for the rudder pedals (see photo above, index colour 'E'). I love this stuff as you can bash it on and then fiddle around with the brush to get different 'wear patterns'. I'm also not worried about the slip that put some on the floor - that's 'chipping'
  • H85, thinned with flow improver, for the IP background (index colour 'B')
  • H62 for the seat squabs (index colour 'J')
  • My new detail brushes. I saw the Tamiya one on a tutorial on cockpit detail so bought one during my visit to the LMS yesterday. £6.50 is a lot to pay for a brush that might clog with acrylic so I also bought a £2.50 size 3/0 to try that too. They're tiny and very pointy. More when I use them later.

The index colours are as much for my reference later but hopefully it'll help others too.

More teeny tiny work to do later so I'm going to rest my eyes for a bit! Thanks for looking.

* It's an old joke but I was really pleased with it so one more outing... too smug? Sorry.

** Dbl-E, score 1, fnaar fnaar. Still at it** when I remember. Ooh, a 'recursive' Dbl-E. Coo.

Anyone noticed I've changed to a new cutting mat? I had a spare and then another arrived with the Airfix VE Day offer. Looks better in the photos!

First set of windows in. After my experience with the Bombay I bought some 'Glue n Glaze' (recommended here) to try out, but actually these windows 'click' in (no, really, you have to push them in and they click!) so I'm not sure it's going to be good test! I'll try it again later as it's much easier to use than epoxy - sorry Nigel!* Also cleans up nicely with damp cotton bud.

I also painted the inside of the cheek windows (as per Phil's post above) with my trusty tin of Humbrol enamel IG. Sadly this seems to have formed a skin through the middle of the tin whilst in my rack. Oh well, it's been a good friend...

There's no internal mask in the Eduard set. Huh! So had to take care - fiddly.

* "Sorry Nigel" also goes through my head every time I've ignored an ejector mark or other blemish. I'm sure he's noticed so again, "Sorry Nigel"! :)

Thanks Stew! I will probably need the muscle relaxant as I need to mow the lawn soon before the tigers find a new home!

Anyway, a bit more fiddly progress:

5e991b2f-2116-4891-9402-c261baf7f0d7_zpsfec19d3e-9af3-4c4c-a560-849ace7f976a_zps

Hard to get the iPhone to focus but I hope you get the idea. Liquitex paint markers and Karisma silver pencil again - poked the white about a bit with a cocktail stick. Some other shots:

490F6A9F-FA76-4B91-91AE-241BE12144F4_zpsC71F930D-2699-4CFC-B7DB-64F690529986_zps

I think I'll take all my detail photos on a piece of white paper from now on.

Had a test fit of the bits in the fuselage and they're not right. Something is stopping the perfect fit I've come to expect - more later.

OK enough, off to mow the lawn!

Wow, that's some great detail work on the IP and cockpit Ced, and the silver/aluminum airbrush work as well. That's VMA huh? I haven't tried any of their metallics. It looks wonderful. Did you prime it first?

OK, I'll quit asking questions, so you can meet your ambitious deadline.

Thanks Jaime, Simon and Rob! So kind and it really helps.

Thanks Cookie, it is VMA 71.062 aluminium (not supposed to be metallic) and thanks for the abbreviation - that'll save me loads of time! Priming is for wimps (except for externals). Keep asking the questions, please, it gives me a break!

Without wanting to turn this into a personal blog (too late) I have mown the lawn (grass). Hard work. Sometimes living in England is a pain - those 'April showers' stop you mowing the grass (too wet) and makes the grass grow faster! It was so long I had to get the 'strimmer' out first and go over the long bits like some modern day Poldark. What is it with women? One glimpse of a man with his shirt off and they're screaming all over the place! Fortunately the nice policeman was very understanding and, as long as promised to keep my shirt on in future, said he wouldn't be taking it any further :)

Anyway, that fuselage fit. It wasn't right. I ended up closing the top and the bottom opened, closed the bottom and the top... well, you get the idea, like those old comedy films with people chasing each other around a tree trunk. I had a close look at the gap (not easy) and I found this:

AA0E1329-8208-46CC-9283-8E3C8BAE61E2_zps

Had a look at Andy's build (no problem?) and the instructions again and I can't see how I'd done it wrong but I chopped this off anyway. Still really tight. It would close up with clamps but the instructions (what's a short version of that?) say you glue the bomb bay into one side and hang the other bits of floor etc from that, so if I get the fit wrong it won't close up. So I scraped the paint off the slots that the parts go into (every micron helps) and the fit was better. To be sure I used some hot glue on both parts (just the one side of the fuselage) and then wired it up so that I know it will fit later:

Aaaaaanyway, well going and good save with the scrapping and what not, enjoy the break in the nice weather I hope. I have to strim the lawn edges tomorrow, shirt off just like the diet coke chap.... Ha ha ha

Sorry to hijack again but after a wine I popped off to get a curry ... Only right.... On returning I found my wife (wondered where I had put her) in front of the TV saying "darling you have to see this its ace! Its all about the most extreme airports!! Look its on ice", sorry there are very few things that could improve the night, and I will leave it up to you to decide what they are in your own head....

Back to you Ced

Now it's evening in California, and while you guys are sleeping it off, I am doing the wine thing. Saturdays are made for this. Don't restart this thread with too much noise in the morning, as it will be my turn to sleep in. OK who am I kidding - have at it!
