Some of the original OEZ/Kovozávody Prostějov's (KP) classics Sukhoi 1/48th kits were becoming difficult to find.

They're to be re-released soon by SMĚR (http://www.smer.cz/en/).

Delighted to see these appear again. Not the easiest of builds & maybe a bit crude by current standards but nonetheless welcome. Still have the Revell boxing of the SU-25. A great pity these very important and widely used types have been so poorly represented thus far.

48 prefix is probably not a part of the article number.

HobbySearchJP used 48 or 72 prefix for scale identification

I wonder what happened to the Mig-21 tooling?

R/ Robert

Business sense maybe? They realise there's various kits (Eduard, Academy) of the Mig-21 which are more modern/accurate/detailed but that's not the case with the Su-7, 17 or 25. I'm guessing they just don't see the market for it.

Aye, good point, though I'm not tossing out mine, they look good & accurate even if lacking current 'state of the art' features like 'tons of tiny parts'. ;^D

Agreed, I've built a couple of the Su-25 kits and just finishing the Su-22. Enjoyable builds, simple and accurate shape. I've had a couple of Eduard Mig-21's in the stash for a good few years and never got round to one yet!

The OEZ Mig-21 is lacking in accuracy as well as being a bit crude

http://sternlaurent.free.fr/migModeling/48kitsComparaison/academyVsEduardVsOez.html

I wonder the reissues will be as cheap as the SMER MiG-17's? That would be a bonus.

Also, while it maybe an obvious markings choice, it's still an awesome scheme

IIRC, there's a big shape issue for the rear fuselage of one of the Su-22, due to a différent engine. Can't remember which one, M3 or M4.

I was looking at that last week, I believe the kit was the M3 and the guy had cut the end section off and re done it. I will have a look tonight again

Very good news. A pity if the MiG-21 is not in there. I liked that kit. I look at the loads of tiny parts on the Eduard kits and put them back in the stash even though they are great kits.

I have just started the Eduard Mig-21 and the seat is a model in itself

The kit is of the Su-17M3 and Su17M4/Su-22M4

The Su-22M3 is the one with the different (way fatter, R29 same as MiG-23) engine! (operated by Hungary, Peru, Libya, and Iraq and Syria maybe) the Su-22M is shapewise the same as the Su-22 M3

questions?

those (and many others of the line!) would be really great in 1/48!

the old KP MiG-21 is available on ebay very often and quite cheap! no need for a re-release is seems! people try to get rid of them! (I keep mine for nostalgic reasons, as I like the big 3 view plan included!)

I might have a look, even just to get one for the nostalgia. Managed to find a pic of one I built many years ago now. I really did like that kit.

I couldn't get the French site that Troy referenced to open re: the OEZ MiG-21's shortcomings. Anyone able to offer a summary?

Cheers!

The OEZ kit accuracy is hopeless. Transparencies and spine are too low, fuselage is too deep, the front fuselage is too ogival. The canopy is terrible because OEZ put the bottom framing where there should be perspex. The framing should be in the fuselage surface (the feet of the capital omega).

The OEZ canopy is almost cylindrical and very narrow.

It may have a few short commings but I still like it!

The main culprit is the canopy. It's too small in all directions and does not fit at all in the closed position. The spine to fuselage ratio is odd. The air intake is too small. The forward airbrakes are too narrow and shallow. The tailplanes have excessive sweep. The wheel wells are too long and narrow in the wings, and flat in the fuselage - lacking the curve due to the presence of the engine.

Moving to details, the cockpit has some (soft) attempt at detail in the IP and sidewalls, the seat is built from slabs of steel, the wheel wells are bare. The surface detail is nice after an overall sanding session although panel lines are not 100% correct (eg a set of engine panels is lacking, etc.) although it's minor esp. in view of the rest.

The oddest feature is the the mating surfaces of the fin and wings have an inside rim that absolutely needs to be removed. You'll need a power tool to do it quickly. Follow the link below for illustration.

You can use one of the spare Eduard canopies on the OEZ fuselage, but the end result looks rather odd, sort of a duckface MiG-21.

Anyone aware of likely price of the re-released SMER/KP Su-17/22s??? Just wondering whether they will be similar money to the Karaya Su-22M4s on Ebay at the moment - 40Euros.

The Hobbysearch website is suggesting 25-30USD, which sounds very reasonable.
