spaceshiprepairman
A number of months ago, I was at a local airfield(one with grass, not tarmac, but did have a couple hangars and a barn on it, along with the obligatory windsock), I came upon a Cessna 182 with a very different paint scheme, basic red with white wings and stabilizer. While I have been working on those and other similar types, some of them antiques(such as ragwing Aeroncas and the occasional Luscomb 8A Silvaire(every cloud has a Silvaire lining as the ad copy used to say), I had never come upon a Cessna 100 series civilian aircraft with anything other than the ubiquitous overall white with artistically applied stripes. As there was no one there, and I happened to have a camera on hand, I quickly shot more than a handful of pics, with the hope of a future building session. I realize that I should have asked permission, but, as I knew the owner of the airfield, and really wasn't about to crawl in and out of it(just take a lot of shots of the outside of it), so I took a chance, and ended up with a fistful of shots that have nearly set my feet on the path to building. However, as scratchbuilding wouldn't be that big a hardship, especially were I to build this as an RC model, at this point, I'm leaning more toward 1/48, or 1/72. So, are there any scale models of the Skylane, or even the 180(from which the 182 was developed)? Me, I like the overall solid red fuselage and fin, and white wings and stab, as it is different from the run of the mill civilian Cessna 100 series(commonly referred to in the industry as the Wichita Spam Can). spaceshiprepairman
Right now, about all the pics I have of this are of sections and pieces, but not the whole bird. I shot them with a future model build in mind.
jasper
Omega Models has a 1/72 scale Cessna 182 Skylane in resin........ I keep hoping one day to see one in 1/48 plastic along with that Champ and Luscombe. I think the major kit makers are missing out on a very big market. Maybe one day they will take notes from the Diecast industry. Gemini Jets sells over 2000 Cessna 172 models a month and and according to their Facebook page they have decided to add more General Aviation Aircraft ! spaceshiprepairman
Which model Skylane is it? The one I shot photos of are of a 1959 straight tail B model Skylane. And yes, major kit makers are missing out on a major market.
The Cameraman
Hi There, LN Decals do a nice Cessna 180, OK it's totally different than the 182 but I thought I'd mention it here, being a rare option for GA aircraft. http://lndecals.com/images/LN-kits/Full/ln72-k03.jpg Regards Reggie
jasper
The Omega model looks to be a 182P or Q model.......mid 70's to early eighties. AZ model has been saying for years that they will be releasing a 1/72 Cessna 180...... Would be very easy to convert it to a 182A or 182B. Maybe they will release it soon , I would be in the market for several !
spaceshiprepairman
Actually, the C182 is a direct development of the C180, the only difference being trike landing gear: The Cessna 182 was introduced in 1956 as a tricycle gear variant of the 180. In 1957, the 182A variant was introduced along with the name Skylane. As production continued, later models were improved regularly with features such as a wider fuselage, swept tailfin with rear "omni-vision" window, enlarged baggage compartment, higher gross weights, landing gear changes, etc. The "restart" aircraft built after 1996 were different in many other details including a different engine, new seating design, etc. By mid-2013 Cessna planned to introduce the next model of the 182T, the JT-A, using the 227 hp (169 kW) SMA SR305-230 diesel engine running on Jet-A with a burn rate of 11 U.S. gallons (42 L; 9.2 imp gal) per hour and cruise at 155 kn (287 km/h). The normally aspirated, avgas fueled 182 will remain in production through 2014.[4][5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_182
