Revell 1/48 PV-1 Ventura

Recommended Posts

Going through my previously started kits I came across my PV-1 I started a good 18-20 months ago.

I started a 1/48 Revell PV-1 Ventura to do in RNZAF markings. (Now in US Marking)

With doing a small build for the french GB at the moment I still wanted to build something else at the same time, to quench my thirst for something bigger. So I've pulled this one out of the loft and given myself a kick up the butt to get it finished.

I did previously start a WIP thread but was so long ago I can not seem to find it, but still have the pictures from when I started.

I've got mine on the bench now.

When you get to the nacelles, add the forward bulkhead to the nacelle itself, its easier to sand out the seam that way. The instructions would have you add it to the wing instead.

So far I've been VERY impressed with the kit, goes together fast!

Also note, on the side windows, there IS a forward and aft orientation to them, check fit before gluing.

Looks really good, but one warning, most RNZAF machines were set up for single pilot operation so no second seat or set of rudder pedals. I believe that the aircraft allocated to 2(Bomber) OTU would have the layout you have done. I think there is one on the Ventura sheet in your post.

With spending so much time researching the exterior of the aircraft, I did not look into the interior, someone previous pointed out to me about the single pilot in New Zealand aircraft. Annoying to the stage where the cockpit is sealed inside the fuselage now.

But one option is still available and will continue

So, on with the build.

I recently read a build review online by one of Revell's main test builder Dieter Wiegmann (he builds all the kit you see the photos of on the side of Revell kit boxes) for those that didn't know

He came up with a genius way of building the kit by splitting up the main components of the aircraft into sub assemblies, look at 2nd picture.

http://www.hyperscale.com/2012/galleries/pv148dw_1.htm

I know this isn't really a new method of modelling, but my main method would be to complete the main aircraft (wings, fuselage, tail and stabilizers etc) then mask and paint.

But thanks to the amazing fit of the kit, serious ladies and gents, I've built Tamiya, Hasegawa kits and this to me beats every kit I've built with fit.

It allows me to just slot the main components together and hey presto, a complete aircraft that doesn't even need to be glued together it fits so comfortably. Great for transporting to shows etc.

The paint jars are being use to keep it straight

So i'm going to paint each wing separate, then the fuselage and final the tail. I have great expectations for this one.

Build is going ok at the moment, but made a couple of fundamental errors, with this and the error in the cockpit with placing 2 seats in the cockpit I'm considering switching to a US aircraft instead.

Seen a good build on IPMS germany which I think i'll follow, good thing is I have the decals for this version as they came with the decals for the NZ aircraft.

So we continue.

First thing I wanted to try, which I have not tried before is to paint free hand with the airbrush without masking, test my aircraft control and also some weathering with slightly lighter/darker toned of the main colors.

photos have come out a little darker and do not do it justice

If anyone in the UK is interested in this kit, you might like to know that 'The Works' highstreet discount bookshops has them for just £10.

So we are moving on at an extremely quick pace for me. I've applied the gloss cote this afternoon/early evening. Going to give the cote a couple of hours to finish drying and going to get all the decals on, there isn't many only about 10-12 required.

2nd cote of gloss tomorrow evening, then Wednesday to weather and seal it all in with a matt cote.

The tricky part for this kit for me is going to be the antenna wiring for this one, there is quite a lot.

decals on, starting to look the part.

I'm not 100% sure if this aircraft had its deicing boots removed in the tropics but is was a practice used when aircraft we flown in the warmer climates.

Anyways, hope you like the progress.
