She's a big bird! Struggling to think how they could have landed or taken off from a carrier!

Quite true! Several books I've read seem to intimate a reverence for the pilots of these, from the fighter pilots.

If you have a look at the dimensions of the Vig. and compare it to an F-14, it becomes quite interesting! A carrier captain I know on another forum says that the Toms' took up the most deck space as they were big birds.

RA-5

  • Length: 76 ft 6 in (23.32 m)
  • Wingspan: 53 ft 0 in (16.16 m)
  • Height: 19 ft 4¾ in (5.91 m)

F-14

  • Length: 62 ft 9 in (19.1 m)
  • Wingspan:
    • Spread: 64 ft (19.55 m)
  • Height: 16 ft (4.88 m)

The folding tail was rather interesting too!

I bought one of these from a car boot back in the day but couldn't finish it as there were too many parts missing. I had no idea they operated from carriers!

Looking good so far though, I'll be watching your build with interest.

Well, it's the first time I've seen the Airfix Vigilante built, and I must admit it does look like a Vigilante should look!

Good show with your build J. Not easy to brush paint a large aircraft.

If I may be so bold, with your next model you should try to thin your paint a bit more (like 20% turp and 80% paint for Humbrol). After 3 coats the finish will be much smoother.

Well done!
