I need to aquire some Bf 109f's in 1/72 for use with the Xtradecal Battle of Malta set and can only find the old Frog kit and the inaccurate Italeri offering. Would it be to much of a job to convert the latest Airfix 109g back to an f2 or f4

The Airfix kit is like a toy in terms of detail.

If you want a decent F, you can try to get a Fine Molds kit or wait until AZ Models bring theirs out. I'm building an AZ Models F-4/Trop right now and it's probably the best 109 in 1/72.

You can get the following ones

https://www.hlj.com/product/FNMFL-02/Air

They work out at just under a tenner per kit but it would be money well spent. We're talking Tamiya or better quality and a mostly accurate too.

thanks

Mike

The latest Airfix G wasn't highly rated.

A quick search of Hannants reveals Amodel and Zvezda do a 1/72 nd F,

the Zvezda is a 'snap kit' but their 1/48th F is the best in scale

So, a few glitches, after that I think it's Fine Molds. Adding some detail to the Zvezda will be easier than backdating the Airfix kit.

As to your original question, yes, you can backdate a G, but there are lots of small changes. In the case of the G6 it means taking off the wing and cowl bumps, shallower oil cooler, new wheels, new carb intake....

Since I typed this Mike has posted, Fine Molds under £10.... I'd get that, unless you can find the Zvezda kit cheap, it's 7.99 at Hannants.

The zvezda kit may be a snap-fit but it's still a nice one, much better than airfix's G IMHO.

Granted, the fine molds offering is a different category but getting them cheap is not easy. If you can, grab them!

There's another alternative: Amodel has an F that is a fine molds clone. Fit is nowhere like the original though
