Tim Moff
Well - In keeping with my routine I will build a 1/48 model as well as the 1/72. Without going 'Full Limey' with the Hase FG1, I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and build the F4G from Spang as part of my childhood USAFE memories project. Jury is out with regarding the finish....I was going for the Lizard/Euro 1 finish, but the other Tim is doing that (I also like 3 colour cam finishes and masking....) So I may use the Xtracolor 48005 decals for the later grey model as I am not sure about the Hase decals? Also think about some aftermarket HARM's or may just build OOB...choices choices!! Enzo the Magnificent
My vote is for the Euro-1 scheme. F-4s in Euro-1 just look so brutal.
Tim Moff
I agree - think the decals are up to it?
Mozzy19
Another vote for the Euro-1 scheme. Sean
Enzo the Magnificent
In my experience Hasegawa decals of that vintage are a little thick but perfectly serviceable. The major issue from that time was that the white sections were always an odd cream colour. I don't think that will be an issue with a Euro-1 scheme.
Dr Evil
There is another option if you're worried about the Hasegawa decals... http://www.reidairpublishing.com/product-p/shg48009.htm
Tim Moff
Thanks - I had seen that sheet but all the links went to a defunct URL. Will have to look at buying them - depending on the content/quantity maybe the other Tim could use them too!
theplasticsurgeon
As you've already noted - my build is 1/72. I used http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48005 for my 48th Lizard Weasel - but seem to remember using some kit decals for insignias and stencils. My kit had Lizard and SEA options. Tim Moff
As it goes I have that sheet - thought it was only good for the greys....Doh!
Dr Evil
That Xtradecal sheet is only for Hill grey, you can't do a Euro One bird from it?
theplasticsurgeon
That Xtradecal sheet is only for Hill grey, you can't do a Euro One bird from it? I didn't know that when I did. Those decals were my first ever aftermarket purchase, and I just wanted Spang codes and a shark's mouth. Looking now, and the white shadowing is absent. modelling minion
Very nice choice Tim. I have very fond memories of seeing these at many air shows, both in the European One scheme and the grey. Of the two I definitely prefer the Euro One. Will you be building her with the shark mouth? I do hope so! Craig.
Enzo the Magnificent
This decal sheet seems to have what you need. http://www.fantasyprintshop.co.uk/Hunters-Gathers_A1K66Q.aspx?nh=121825 Edit: erm... except it's in 1/72... Tim Moff
Well got my decals - real nice, also bagged the F16 Euro ones too. As per requests, I will do a Shark mouth from Spang! The Q is, in my ref pic, it has the underwing tanks, but the pic below suggests just underbelly tank and 1 x HARM on the Port, with ALQ131 rather than the ALQ119, AGM 78 Standard ARM and AGM 45 Shrike in the kit. Would the load on the pic make sense? May be some aftermarket then or a look in my Academy F15E and Hase F16 boxes!! http://www.eduard.com/store/Eduard/Brassin/Aircraft/1-48/AGM-88-HARM-1-48.html http://www.ebay.com/itm/Attack-Squadron-Models-1-48-U-S-AGM-88-HARM-MISSILE-/191279745794
Jens
It wasn't unusual to see Spang F-4Gs without wing tanks. Spang used AN/ALQ-131s while George (WW) used AN/ALQ-184. Jens

Tim Moff
So just got started with the tub, seats and pilots. Managed some basic painting, bit of dry brushing, need to tidy up, add some colour and weather wash. Still more to do yet, just an update. Some work to do, need to cut of the nodules on the upper wings, be a razor saw job I spose. Taken some advice from a previous builds regards attaching the nose and building up each fuselage side before joining. http://www.scalespot.com/onthebench/f4g/f4g_build.htm http://www.helmo.gr/index.php?option=com_deeppockets&task=catContShow&cat=22&id=1146&Itemid=35 Now I will pre shade, however may try to post shade as the colours are dark. The thread indicates that the paint was left to dry, then a slighty lightened version of the colour was sprayed onto the middle of some panels - is this the best way?
nimrod54
Very nice work on the cockpit details Tim, great start mate.
Tim Moff
Bit more work done, mainly the Pit and getting the raised areas off the upper wing and other bits that need to come off the kit. Bit sanding, hopefully not too much damage. Scribing not my best skill, tried a bit just to get lines back in! The pit had a bit of a wash with floreys just to give it a used look: Upper wing work: Also completed a test fit of the fuselage pieces, fits like a dream! Just going to build up each side first to make any extra work easy, and also put the landing gear doors into the lower wing. Nice kit!

Tim Moff
Some more work done on the wings, undercarriage doors, and joined the fuselage. Also started on some stores... Have test fitted the wing assembly, bit of filling will be needed, on the wing join and also around the intakes....getting there!
