Tim Moff
Ok so I am in with this 'obsolete' kit! However I like the idea of a simple job, which will join the growing group builds on my boys ceiling! Apparently she has been saved from the scrapheap when Leauchars was handed over to the Army. Have secured a canopy (thanks RS2MAN) and a Modeldecal 101 set. Not sure on the stores yet (missiles or not) - will be built as flying in good nick with a bit of weathering at the smokey end.... David Womby
Despite its faults, I really like the old Mbox Phantom so I'll watch with interest. David
Duncan B
That last photo is excellent, I notice that the red 'M' doesn't appear to be on the fin in that one? Anyway, good luck with a favourite scheme of mine. Duncan B
Tim Moff
Yes, it has been discussed before (I done a bit of research!) - apparently the M was added later. Not sure of the age of the pic, maybe after a respray. Will do my best with the old matchbox kit, as you all know I am not a detail builder, more a hobbyist/producer for my sons ceiling! Duncan B
Yes it does look super clean in that shot apart from the usual suspects, wheels and doors. I suspect you are right about it being newly painted in that photo. Duncan B
Mozzy19
One of my favourite Phantom schemes. Those pictures may have just pushed me towards doing it in 1/48, if I can find the kit in the loft that is... Sean
Tim Moff
Im tempted too as I have an FG1 - but am going for the G-Spook
Duncan B
Interestingly, I am led to believe that the reason that 111's 'G' ended up in the low viz scheme but with the red, white and blue roundels (so I was told in the hanger at the time it was being painted anyway) was that it was originally going to be repainted as a 'Black Arrow' for the Phantom celebrations at Greenham in 1983* (IIRC) but Strike Command put a stop to it during the repaint by which time the markings had been painted and masked off. I was quite interested in the whole painting process having seen it getting stripped of the camo (to reveal the red fin of 892) and primed then the markings applied and masked before getting the final top coat sprayed on. I know one of our Members was actually in charge of the repaint so maybe he will confirm the accuracy of that anecdote. Duncan B * Or was it for IAT Fairford in 1985?

Tim Moff
Well not much done yet, just a start. Primed initial areas, started on the pilots and tub, seats etc. Not going to town too much as Matchbox is basic and it will be closed and again on the ceiling. 'Black Mike' was nearly always clean stores wise so I have had to fill in the slots and added a bit of filler around the undercarriage area. Still some to do. Its a start I spose!
Cookenbacher
Nice start Tim! It's fun to see an older kit being built.
Tim Moff
Little bit of work over the week, Black Mike is coming together. Got the pit in and the fuselage sealed up. Wing stores holes filled and sanded: Going to have to use Micro Kristal Klear for the windows mid cockpit as glass parts missing from kit: Quick bit of black paint to see how the wings look - 1 needed another pass: Bit fiddly to close up, will do some basic seam work, though plastic is v soft. Not far feom a coat of primer - no point in pre shading - gonna be gleaming black gloss as per this pic: Cheers for looking - a fun build no where like the detail of some of the others in the group, but keeping me happy!

nimrod54
Great job on this venerable kit. I used to like these kits, they were usually accurate with the biggest bugbear being the depth of the panel lines.

Tim Moff
Oh well - deed is done - got the Humbrol Black Gloss (HUM 21) rattle can out and gave him a couple of coats.....seems ok, hard to tell as the black doesn't seem to photo well (any tips?!) Give it a couple of days to harden - now as its gloss will I need to Klear for decals? Don't normally if using Xtracolor. Hope the canopy fit is good (sealed around with some (Kristal Klear), otherwise Sqn Ldr M.R. Fish and Flt Lt I.A.M. Chip will come out of their darkness looking like they have rolled in Tar!! Fingers crossed its an ok finish!! Happy Bank Holidays (if you are in the UK!) Edited May 22, 2015 by Tim Moff
Arniec
That is looking great Tim. I am a great fan of Matchbox. They aren't state of the art, but are fun to build!!! I have two in my Matchbox stash and want to be build. But first it will be the Tornado F3 for the rememberance build of the Tornado. Keep up the good work. Rob G
All these Mbox Tooms coming out of the closet (wait, that doesn't sound right)... good to see them, chaps. Tim, you're doing a fine job (and does anyone have a count of how many Black Mikes are in this GB?)
