GWH Early Vulcan Conversion B1 B1a B2 Blue Steel and 698 Pit Road

Recommended Posts

Right, another of Rob's Vulcan builds, in with this one from the start :D

Yes I usually encounter you towards the end of a build. Nice your here from the beginning and its likely going to be a long build with what I have planned for this one.

Hope your well mate.

All the best Rob :)

Awesome sauce RobV, improving an awesome kit of an awesome aircraft! Also in an awesome scale, I love 144! the GWH/Pit Road Vulcan is on my wish list, so I'll be watching this thread with enthusiasm.

I have a question for you, and everyone else as well: I may have made a few kits in my time but I've never come anywhere near the levels of accuracy that people here strive for, and I think I would like to! But ai don't know where to even begin to start? I mean, where do you even get those scale drawing from, I could certainly use some, especially for the vacforms I have just started?

Cheers, this will be an ace build,

Viv

Ha ha yes I seem to find your threads about page 7 or later. At least this time I've one of those wee yellow stars next to your thread to keep it visible when I tap the "View New Content" button :D

Can honestly say that I have little to complain about in life at the moment thanks and even finding time to poke some plastic around the workbench every so often. Been meaning to PM you for ages but your in-box was full last time and I've consistently forgotten to try again since.

I'd say not trusting scale plans is the first rule of building an accurate model Viv. If you can find ones which are noted for their accurate depiction of the machine in question they are most useful but anything else is more of a hindrance than a help. A good selection of photos from you chosen subject can go a long way to increasing your understanding of its various nuances and asking around here will usually bring forth a wealth of information.

Viv there is little wrong with the GWH kit I did make a list of some corrections on my model of XL444 but it's very minor, the worst is the bulge in the top of the nose you can see on the mold it looks like they added a thick layer as some seem to think it's like that but actually it should be sleek like the airfix kit which is actually smack on.

As for Drawings they are hard to come by sometimes and often not very accurate or partially accurate. The ones I have seem to be exceptionally good however but I also have other drawings which are very good but I'll get into that more later it regards wing angles of the Vulcan B1 which is now extinct so it's hard to check and ive spent a life learning and observing this as the plane just appeals to me.

I have plenty of theads on concearning early Vulcans I am clearly obsessed with the thing but very happy with it too.

You should try Bently drawings they are wonderful also look in old magazines and there are the flying model plans which could be fun to make as a static model even if not accurate.

Col glad you having fun poking the plastic about and ive finally emptied my inbox few have told me it's full im not used to getting that much mail so try again.

It's cool you want to watch I am actually surprised I have not been banned from Vulcan posts I mighht be boring some to death. I never intended to get to make so many believe it or not I love other subjects and can't wait to get stuck into the stash. But I can't ignore my inspiration to keep making Vulcans at the mo. I realise that there are many others who focus on a type. Be it harriers , Canberras, Tornados, Tigermoths. All fun :)

Cheers Rob :)

I have managed to pass a mylar sanding stick and files over this now to start refining the shape and I think its getting there now. Its making me happy for sure. I love the appearance of the early Vulcans Tail area how it all flows elegantly and streamlined to the back. I do like the later style with a big rugby ball shape stuck on the back too but its nice to see the design as intended start to take form.

First of all thank you Rob, you're inspiring👍👍👍👍, not only have you cracked it, you've taught this old dog a new trick or two. I'm now obliged to follow your lead and put it into practice- if I may?

Looking forward to seeing the finished model.

Regards Adrian

Well thanks very much. I'm new to this side of things but it's good fun. What are you making ?.

The intention for me now I think is to get this tail cone up and then mold it and make duplicates. I may take things further still yet and make other parts. As I can see some other items I'd like to look at.

All the best Rob :)

Ooo that'll be telling!!!!😄😄

I've a few ideas, but may just start with a few components and see how I go, but now we have a certain BofB aircraft in captivity, I've always fancied doing one in 1/32 scale to go with it's two stablemates- very ambitious!!!!

The Revell Harrier, wish I'd bought one when they were in the shops. I remember seeing one either in our local model shop (on Ryton St in Worksop) or Smiths along with the 1/32 ultra rare Hien.👀👀👀👀

Boy is hindsight a double edge sword 😏😏😏😏

Radpoe yes I understand that the Harrier is quite a rare kit, I am surprised it has not been reissued as im sure it would prove popular and they're could be plenty of scope for AM parts to be made maybe.

Winenut cheers glad you approve. It might well allow a fair few Vulcans to be created if I can win my fight with the plastic.

Dunno where we would be without good old milliput :)

Cheers Rob :)

I have done some more shaping and also been building up a few sunk areas with good 'ol MrSurfacer 1000 and 500 to try and get this as nice as possible.

I have also been making up this section here to help with the location of the tail cone around the inside of the top fuselage half on the kit where the Inside of the tail trough attach point is.

Right then, I have made up a block of plastic out of plastic strips and mounted the Tail cone on to it,

This made it easier to clean up as I get it ready to mold it.

I will have to pop out and get some rubber later I am lucky that smoothons main distribution centre for the UK is around the corner from me.

Here I am looking at the gear and drawings what you see here is the Airfix front Gear in 1/72 which is correct for the B2 but as you can see the pit road part is too short even for a B2 in the section below the hollow triangle it also mounts too see into the model resulting in a sad looking Vulcan. As you can see on the drawings the B1 was much Taller and had a totally different gear that that was much longer. The tyres rear gear and wheels were also totally Different to the B2, im looking to correct the B2 gear and make a B1 pattern gear too.

A start let's cut it in half !

I get mixed up with all these V Force code names, Red shrimp, Orange putter, Violet Club, Yellow Sun, Blue Steel etc..

You might find this useful, then: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rainbow_Codes

Or should that say /wiki/List_of_Porn_Outlets ?

Love the new tail; you make it look easy!

Thanks very much mate. That's a good read it looks, I just had a quick look and I love the Nickname for the Buccaneer or Black Banana ! , Never heard that used before.

Cheers It would not say its hard or easy more a product of obsession/frustration and Desperation to have decent models of Early Vulcan's. If I did not love the things so much I would not go to this trouble.

Glad you like it I am about to set about molding the thing  , Bit nervous I will cock up my work.

You have to try though :)

Cheers Rob :)

Well here is a good use for Bog Roll and Tea Towel centres.

The master with the block attached is Gator glued to some Plasticard and then I have sprayed it with some Mann Ease Release 200 and the inside of the bog roll. (Ease Relase and Bog Roll... hmm :shit: )

I will leave this for 30 Mins or so I have blue tak'd the Roll in place and confident it will be ok but think I may opt for glue in the future.

I love the fact that Ikara was known as Blue Duck before it entered service. I served in an Ikara ship; I wish I'd known!

You served in a Blue Duck I guess then :) love these code names so cool
