robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) So what can you do with some Drawings I wonder. I met Andy (General Melchett) a while back and he showed me some excellent Drawings he had for A Vulcan B1 in 1/144th scale. He kindly sent them to me as a scan but unable to print them off they where a curiosity I had studied and still do for ages at a time. Then a few weeks later I found a copy of the drawings in print form to scale. I come from a long line of engineers but have no clue about how its done and always wondered how I anyone sets about converting 2D drawings into 3D objects. After many cups of Coffee and a week at home skint I had not much to do and thought I would have ago at trying to figure it out. I thought, Tracing paper !.. So I got some Tracing paper and plasticard and decided to do this : I thought I would have ago at making just the tail cone for A Vulcan B1 or Early B2 i used some 3m spray glue to affix the tracing paper for the bulkhead plan and side views of the cone. And then I cut them out. and glued them together. I am not a scratch builder I have dabbled and my first read go was the Intakes for the Frog Vulcan I am working on so I am seeing what I can do with this now. So to anyone interested grab a coffee or tea, Perhaps a brandy and lets see what happens with this. It could be a long build... Cheers Rob Edited August 30, 2015 by robvulcan 4
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 I have decided to be brave and go for it, So here is a Virgin Pit Road kit getting the Manx cat treatment ! 3
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 I'm pulling up a chair to watch this one, dude!! Brilliant now all wee need is some Pork Scratchings a pickled egg and a few Pints and we will be half way there 4
MattBlack33 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I've got some Scampi Fries and a bottle of Hobgoblin? 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 I've got some Scampi Fries and a bottle of Hobgoblin? Even better. I think I might well be missing the pub at the moment. Must be this nice weather we are having 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Well it fits great. Even though the Pit Road kit is a B2 the common parts of the B1 (which are very few) Match very well indeed. So I am getting optimistic with this and a little excited too. 2
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 The way the panel lines are on the Kit and the the Drawings mean I am going to had to create a step on the lower edge of the Bulkhead. I made a copy of the shape then stuck it to thicker plasticard to cut out later. Cheers Rob 3
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 No I have cut the bulkhead piece out and sanding it to fit with Mylar Pads. Cheers Rob 3
perdu Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Look Rob, if scratchbuilding was difficult or even impossible d'you think I'd be able to do it? I would advise adding interim cross section shapes along the ribbed bit to allow the gently subtle bits to follow form But as you are doing it nicely already I'll just sit here quietly with the occasional shandy and a 'six of chips'® for relaxation 2
toms111s Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 This looks very interesting. I remember my Dad used to have a series of books that where plan forms of various aircraft with cross section views of the wings and fuselage. I always wanted to have a go at making something from them but forgot about it until I read this, I will have to ask him if he still has the books. You may have opened up a can of worms here Rob! 1
Val Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Brilliant now all wee need is some Pork Scratchings a pickled egg and a few Pints and we will be half way there Now that's an idea!! 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Looking good so far mate Cheers dude This looks very interesting. I remember my Dad used to have a series of books that where plan forms of various aircraft with cross section views of the wings and fuselage. I always wanted to have a go at making something from them but forgot about it until I read this, I will have to ask him if he still has the books. You may have opened up a can of worms here Rob! Sounds interesting I will be interesting to see what worms you find Look Rob, if scratchbuilding was difficult or even impossible d'you think I'd be able to do it? Cheaper too and more fun. Here we go, hold on to your hats! Defiantly if there is a low flying Vulcan I might as well start making up sub assemblies. This is the Tail as comes in the kit but I will need to reshape the fin cap to the earlier sleek style and make a fillet for the Rudder. as the tail fin will now need to be longer in this area where the new bee sting style tail will be 3
Val Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Sun = Pub = I hear ya, brother!! As soon as I'm out of work, I'm straight... well, home to do some homework for my course, but if i wasn't doing that, I'd definitely be at the pub 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 I hear ya, brother!! As soon as I'm out of work, I'm straight... well, home to do some homework for my course, but if i wasn't doing that, I'd definitely be at the pub I don't drink much these days. In fact until recently I did not drink at all but now I have the odd one. Not like my college days though.... I remember they said "This is not school we treat you as adults here, you can do as you wish if you choose to not attend your lessons thats up to you !" ,,..... Every lunch after that we all headed for the Pub and thats where we would stay often till kicking out time........ Man I could not even afford that now. 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Ok so now the Milliput is on and I have simply wet smoothed it with my finger to look as close as possible to the the shape of the 1/72 Flight Path offering. Later this can be sanded down to a better more accurate shape. I have done this with the former in place to help gauge how it should look. Its Tom Probert who give me this idea saying you shape and sand till you see the plasticard then stop as you have your shape. I am pretty happy with how things are going so far. The Flight path cone represents the later B1 cone with a mod to the radar, Think it was orange putter, Not sure Ill have to read up on it. I get mixed up with all these V Force code names, Red shrimp, Orange putter, Violet Club, Yellow Sun, Blue Steel etc.. they all sound like porn outlets to me But I also intent to model the earlier smaller type too. Current plan is to make this an early B2 probably XH533 and then I might take things further. Cheers Rob 3

There's a famous quote that I can't find about a sculptor who had made a fabulous elephant. When asked what his method was he said "I just get a lump of stone and chip away the bits that don't look like an Elephant". (I wish there was an 'I'm not shopping' button on search engines. Put me out of my misery someone.) I am pretty happy with how things are going so far. And so you should be - looking great! Darby Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I've got some Scampi Fries and a bottle of Hobgoblin? Hobgoblin all round. You can keep the fries though; make your fingers smell. Try explaining that one. 3

Cheers dude and I would not know where to start with stone carving but I do happen to know one of the best in the country at it. Used to do it for the National Trust Hobgoblin all round. You can keep the fries though; make your fingers smell. Try explaining that one. Do you have your fingers sniffed on a regular basis then ? 1
robvulcan Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 The Milliput Has Dried off a little now and I have made up and filed the Tail Fin to shape. Starting to resemble an early B2 now cheers Rob 2
