L'aperitif - 1/72 Heller Dewoitine D510

Recommended Posts

Hi Stew

Nice one

Ref the gloss finish on the markings at this time most if not all of the markings where done in gloss paint so you have it correct.

At the start of WW2 this was the same and they had to dull them down with a oily dirty wipe over as they found out to there cost that the gloss roundels stood out very well and was a good aiming point for them dam Jerrys.

Quick and very effective build!

It looks beautiful!

I built that kit some 20 years ago and I stupidly decided to have it in green, so I had to paint my own "Faucheuse" in white on clear decals... You can imagine!

Never forget it was the best fighter in the world circa 1936!!! This hasn't happened often since in France...

Great job!

Found you just as you've finished! Sorry to miss this Stew but she sure looks purdy.

Thanks Ced... I wouldn't go quite as far as purdy, not in the conventional sense at least, but it does have sort of a strange dragonfly-esque elegance about it :)

Good afternoon Stew

:wow: she looks very nice good job you have done ..

Patrice

Patrice, merci boucoup :D

Great job Stew, clean, simple and very effective!

Thanks very much Steve, they scrub up nice, these little Hellers, don't they?

Paul, thank you very much, I find nothing more gratifying than accidentally being right about something; that it doesn't happen very often makes it all the sweeter when it does :D

Merci boucoup Jean, I did see a profile with those markings and if I could have bought a decal set I would have gone for it... but painting la Faucheuse myself? Non, merci

Cheers,

Stew

Thanks Wez, it is a strangely lovely bird isn't it? I hadn't heard of the LF decals, I'll check them out, cheers :)

With the long narrow wings and the large prop, it reminds me in plan view of one of those plume moths that form a letter T at rest

Look likes its a nice little kit!

Very good job here, Stew, congratulations!

I'm wondering if Heller did keep the mold, or if it was sold to SMER?

Would be nice to see a re-pop, say, with some Spanish civil war markings.

Ah, I had to look it up Joseph, but you are right, there is a distinct resemblance :hmmm:

Thanks very much Antoine, I know SMER did release a version of this kit (I think with only one set of markings though) but I don't know whether the deal with Heller meant that SMER got the moulds or if Heller produced a certain number of kits for SMER... if this kit was produced today I imagine there would be two different boxings, one for the Armee de l'Air versions and one for the surprising variety of foreign users (and I would buy both, especially if Heller ever produced a new-tool version though I appreciate this is unlikely to occur outside of my fevered imagination).

That is one great model of a pretty aircraft, you've done a grand job there.

Wez

Thanks very much Wez, it was a nice build and I am pleased with the result, plus it fulfils what I consider my contractual obligation of at least one kit finished per GB

Cheers.

99% chances that heller sold the molds to SMER.

As for a new tool from Heller....

As for a new tool from Heller....

Quite. It is a shame, they really need someone to sugar-daddy them the way Hornby has with Airfix.

That's a lovely looking build.

I've always liked the 510, particularly the grim reaper scheme.

Karl

Thanks Karl, I must admit that it was largely the markings that attracted me to this kit in the first place: Coolest Squadron Badge Ever :D

Cheers,

Stew

A really good build Stew, love the scheme....also seen a scheme with a shark on the fuselage, which looked good too.

The Heller kits are superb for their time. I was a Matchbox fan back in the day, with an odd Heller threw in. When I began modelling again, I had a part built Heller Tempest that I started in probably 1991 and finished in 2013! So Heller kits probably reignited the modelling bug again for me.

Anyhow, top build Stew,

Rob

Cheers Rob, the Shark scheme is one of the options in the Pavla kit and it does look pretty cool B) - it was all Airfix and Matchbox where I bought my models when I was a kid, I never saw a Heller kit until the Heller-Humbrol kits were released in the early 1980's :clif: - some of the Heller kits are really nice models, I'm not sure I've ever seen the Tempest unless it is the same one that was released in the Airfix 'Aircraft of the Aces' series, which was quite a nice kit - it had no pilot figure though, which is why I thought it might be originally a Heller kit... :hmmm:

Hmm, I'm minded to pick one of these up if I can nab a cheap one, it fits with a WHIF project I have...

Hey Mitch, you can often find them second-hand for about a fiver on ebay, or new for £7.99 at Kingkit

I came late to this party, only to find a superb result!

I built this kit when it was first released in 1979. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have been fortunate enough to find another kit a few weeks ago. That is now in The Stash receiving the adoration that it truly deserves!

It's good to see your excellent build, Stew. It brings back a lot of memories.
