Dassault Etendard IVM - 1978 - 11F - updated 2020 march 7th

Recommended Posts

Hi all !

After some summer works , and pleasures as well , it's time to go back at the bench .

Remember : the next part to build is that one :

16050803570517732314208796.jpg

One small problem to solve : to get some PC , luckily it's summer time .... and summer time equals ice cream , and luckily ( again ! ) I love ice creams .

Picard ice cream packaging has 2 benefits : it protects the product ( of course ! ) and its design provides a variety of thicknesses .

16082202214917732314443917.jpg

As usual I check photographs again and again .

On the following example , I compared the part's height ( red line ) between the 2 photographs to calculate the proportion between them, and after I was able to assess the lengt and depth of the part. ( I'm not sure this explanation is clear ???? ) :mental:

16082203135017732314443924.jpg

It's time to draw a "blue print" :

16082201310017732314444629.jpg

The part ( #3 ) will finally be built by glueing 6 styren slices together ( #4 ) to achieve ( hopefully ! ) a neat result.

One last check : some Tamiya tape cut to the dimensions of the part are put on the model .... and there's a problem .... what ?????

Did I make a mistake during my calculations ????

No ..... I just f.....d up when measuring the tape . :chair:

16082203102417732314444987.jpg

And I actually achieved a rather neat result ( OK on the photograph below ) and I was silly enough to dare trying to engrave it ... and I destroyed it ( ARG !!!!! ) ....

In fact I destroyed 3 of them ( remember , it means 18 parts ..... ) :hanging:

16082203542817732314445109.jpg

... to finally build a 4th and LAST one , that I didn't engrave ... sorry about that :weep: .

Please note that it's equipped with a copper wire instead of a lead one ( not strong enough for this particular part ) and of a placard on top.

16082207114017732314445717.jpg

And , it's not finished .... there's one last case to build .... asap ... tomorrow in fact , I promise !

Thanks again and again for passing by ! :thumbsup:

Hi all !

As promised last night , I just finished the back of the seat 's last part : a case and its connection.

16082905354817732314458907.jpg

A last one for the joke ... and addtitionnally to remind myself ( an allways unsatisfied modeller ) the actual size of the stuff !

See you soon for the HUD and its friends !!!!

Hi all !

I'm back !

Ok .... roughly 10 months ... it's not as soon as that ...  :sorry:

Nevertheless , Here are some tiny updates :

The seat : I wanted to add a safety pin and it's RBF stuff , it's done

17062501042417732315111713.jpg

My model managed to try a barrel and crashed on my bench upside down !

And a kind of miracle occurred : no damages , except for the stick , which BTW was too long , and it's no more !!!

17061909042517732315101973.jpg

Then , it was time to build the HUD :

Basically , I wanted to build this :

17062611234317732315115353.jpg

... located there :

17062611234417732315115354.jpg

As usual , PC " made in Picard " and Q-tips , and my trusty Chopper II .

17062611234617732315115355.jpg

Then fitting tests and tests and tests : it's very tricky to find the right size for the HUD  and it's glass ( and the appropriate angle )  because the space available is really tiny and the thickness of the windshield is impossible to measure .

17062701055417732315115382.jpg

Then , it's painting time :

1 - black primer

2 - silver in the hole + dark grey ( too grey !!!! )

3 - drak grey ( again ! ) but not as dark as the previous one + silver drybush ( very light ) + UV Solic resin for the lens

17062701373217732315115385.jpg

And the final product : the glass is glued with contacta clear .

Thanks for passing by and see you ...... soon  :winkgrin:

Great to have you back on BM, Basket! :thumbsup:

Spectacular job on the HUD :clap::worthy: Mind if I ask how did you cut the plastic rings?

Ciao

Thanks !

As I wrote , I cut the plastic rings and almost everything else with my Chopper II . It's a guillotine for modellers , IMO , it's very , very , very useful.

any update here?

Cheers!

Thanks for asking !

And in fact there is ........ an tiny update .

Heller decided not to choose between wintips folded or extended : as a consequence, they're isn't any way to get a clean and robust assembly of these parts of the model !

Check this : 4 kinds of " stumps " !!!

As usual , I decided to rework something ( again !!!!!!!!!! ) on the model .  And this is the way folding wintips are attached to the wings.

Done !

Next step : the locking system for those tips !

Thanks to all of you for passing by and for your kind  words .

Hello all ! :welcome:

I've been working on wingtips locking system for toooooooooooo long and didn't manage to achieve something clean and neat .

I temporaly gave up to restart with a different approach .... later ...

Meanwhile I decided to finish the cockpit and it's been quite a challenge :

As usual , documentation is the starting point :

Front view :

It's not as busy as the sides : 1 hole ( green arrow ) , one big electric cable ( blue arrow  ) , in the background : 3 cables ( red a. ) which penetrate under the plate .

<a href=19033103562617732316182923.jpg" />

Starboard view :

2 very long cylinders , in fact  the body of analog instruments ( red a.) , their power lines and connections  ( green a. ), a  "reading light look like" stuff connected to the dashboard ( yellow a. ) , an electric case and its power supply ( blue a. )

<a href=19033103562717732316182924.jpg" />

Port view :

A hole  ( red a. ) , cables ( green a. ) , another " reading light " smaller than the left one  ( blue a.) , cylinders , 3 of them , shorter than right side ones ( yellow a. ) , the incidence indicator (  orange a. ).

<a href=19033104390717732316182950.jpg" />

A " blueprint " :rofl:  to know what to build !   :mental:  :

<a href=19033103563017732316182926.jpg" />

Drilling holes to give access to the electrical harness :

<a href=19033103563317732316182927.jpg" />

Bench cleaned and supplies and tools ready !

<a href=19033103575217732316182933.jpg" />

After a deep exploration in my spare part box and generally speaking in my cave :phew:, I didn't manage to put my hands on any adequate electrical wire I could strip out , that could mimic a 1/48 connection .:shrug:

I had to switch to B plan .... a quite challenging one !!!!
Let's build cylinder and plug some wires into them !

Cylinders : streched Q tips cut to adequate size with my chopper II.
Electrical wires : thin and extra thin  lead wire.

Tiny , not to say microscopical pieces are handled with a cheap but astonishingly efficient tool : a nail art wax pencil !!!! I LOVE IT   :heart:, it litteraly changed my modeller's life and thanks to it , my carpet monster is starving to death !!!! :winkgrin:

" Cylinder slices " are positionned vertically on Tamita tape and wires are inserted . A drop of CA glue , job done !

You just have to put them at the desired position , with your pliers ( not your wax pencil ... it's too heavy ) .... be careful , your carpet monster is very hungry and in a very bad mood !

Left : the big pink would become a case , right : the small blue one a reading light ...  ( before being devoured by my  carpet monster ... :angry:  )

<a href=19033103563517732316182929.jpg" />

<a href=19033103563517732316182928.jpg" />

Final result , after a hours of hard work .:waiting:

<a href=19033103563817732316182930.jpg" />

<a href=19033103564017732316182932.jpg" />

<a href=19033103563917732316182931.jpg" />

Ready for paint job ! :)

<a href=19033103562617732316182922.jpg" />

Voilà !

See you soon , well ... later :bye:

Hello Basket - I just stumbled across this build - I was going to ask you what you thought about the different Etendard kits as I may do one myself one day to go with my Alize - good to see you back on this build

Hello , thanks for passing by .

About Etendard kits 1/48 , unless you want to spend ages on it , forget Heller .

Kitty Hawk and Kinetic Super Etendard offers are not excellent ( too much parts , poor fitting .... ) and both kits seem to have bizarre front landing gear  , or at least , front wheel .

Personaly I chose the Kinetic , and I'm prepared to have a lot of work with it .

If  you want to build a IV M or IV P , you have only the Kitty Hawk model or of course Heller .

Thanks for that information Remy - the detailing is very nice on your model    - I have also found a couple of builds/reviews of the different Etendard kits here on BM.

I also tried your tip tonight of using stretched plastic Q tips to get small thin walled tubing - solved a problem I had making rubber grips on an intake blank handle in 1/32!

thanks again
