Good work Cookie, I think when it is done this one will be all the sweeter for the trouble it has given you along the way :)

Goodluck Spitfire's still doing its stuff, I'll keep you posted if I get any further luck from mine :D

Cheers,

Stew

"Giemme - I wonder if the Force could fix seams. (That is why I fail.)"

I'm afraid the Force isn't working for chore businesses ...

Good progress on both ACs, you definitely can do multitasking ...

Hey Cookie! Sorry to be late to this... I'm a stranger to group build land so I missed it.

Here now though, sharing the pain

Thanks everybody!

I finally made some progress worth posting.

The canopy is masked and attached, as well as the turbo-supercharger inlets.

I then brushed on some metalizer, and masked off the portions I want to chip down to the aluminum.

And then sprayed the enamel Yellow Zinc Chromate.

I plan to apply hairspray, and then an acrylic Olive Drab. Then, when I chip it, the chips will randomly be down to either the primer or the bare metal. We'll see how it goes.

very nice, I like your trick for the "chipping", may have to steal it! I haven't tried the hairspray method yet, usually used either really good masking tape or tap the paint (causes it to flake off and on the leading edge gives you that slightly beaten up look).

You've made great progress with this one, am dying to see the finished product.

Wow, looking at it now, you'd hardly believe how poor the fit was. Looking good, Cookie.

Thanks everybody!

I painted the bottom with Vallejo FS 36173 (actually a mix of their Model Air and Model Color FS 36173 as the Model Color version is a little lighter, and I wanted to lighten it a tad).

IMG_1746_zpsgbattvko.jpg

And did a little chipping before it completely dried. I didn't use hairspray on the bottom, as I learned the hard way that it weakens the paint too much to mask it. Fortunately, Vallejo acrylics don't stick too tightly to metalizer, and I was able to do some chipping on the leading edge and some panels. Olive Drab is next.

Nice underside finish! Are going to add some more weathering or post-shading?

Let me fix that for you.

Absolutely top-notch work, Cookie. Amazing to see this brute of a kit bend to your will.

Very tidy work Cookie old top :)

PC, you are incorrigible; I'm not saying you're wrong, but you're definitely incorrigible :D

Cheers,

Stew

Thanks for the kind words Rich and Les, and thanks for the Vallejo correction PC. I'm afraid it is true. Stew, your rebuke was lost on this guy.

Giemme, I don't think I'm going to fade the underside grey, but it is definitely going to get battered and dirtied up.

I actually have a Mass Teen Fainting Plumtree shirt like the one in the movie.

Cookie I love the first video. Reminds me of Douglas Adam's "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" when, for reasons I won't go into here, his secretary tears out all the pages of his dictionary between (I think) 'G' and 'M' allowing him to repeatedly quote, for example, "Incorrigible's a word that's not in my dictionary". Classic. RIP Douglas.

Giemme, I don't think I'm going to fade the underside grey, but it is definitely going to get battered and dirtied up.

As for the second video can I just say that, although your proposed weathering technique might well achieve the desired results, it might be easier to buy some Mig washes instead?

Thanks Ced, I may look into those. My favorite thing to use for heavy weathering is cheap tempera paints. We'll see how it goes.

I got the P-38 all masked up for the Olive Drab.

I sprayed and then chipped some MM Acrylic Olive Drab.

OOF, I now notice that the seam behind the cowlings needed some more work. Too late now! May have to get creative with the weathering there.

Looking good Cookie, especially the chipping.

I'm still playing with weathering so I followed your link and those water based tempera paint look great - easy to use, not smelly and easy to remove! I might look for a set to try out. The washes are easy but a bit smelly and they do stick if you don't get them off quick enough. Although they will come off with thinners we all know where that can lead!

I should also (probably) widen my thread reading. At the moment, if it's not 1/72 in Europe in WWII it doesn't get looked at. Friends get followed (I'm even watching Jon's 2CV!) but that's it. Hmmm.

"One day, I'll grow up and build wheels down..."? Nah. Wheels up is grown up too IMHO! :)

This kit has been a bit of a trial for you Cookie, but it is starting to come together now. Keep up the good work mate.

very nicely done cookie! :D

Your pre-weathering certainly worked out quite nicely. she looks great. I would have noticed the cowling join unless you had told me, you should be able to "hide" that quite easily.

Well you are on the home stretch now and it should be all smooth sailing from here.
