HMS Somerset F82

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the comments guys.

More good work going on there! Is that tracker radar off set on all the ships or just Somerset (I'm doing Kent.........eventually!)

Bob

In answer to your question Bob, the forward tracker radar is offset to Starboard on all ships in the class, the Trumpeter model is incorrect. The correct position has the centreline of the lozenge shaped radar dish on the ship centre line. I hope this helps.

Another post as I pick my way through the differences between the model and the White Ensign Photo Etch detailing set. This time it is the difference between the guard rails on the port and starboard side of the bridge roof. The PE mirrors the guard rails and this would be OK for earlier ships of the class (Norfolk to Richmond) but for the later ships the position of the ladder up to the bridge roof is in a different place (it’s further aft) on the Port side which means that the PE guard rail needs to be butchered to align with the ladder position.

Here are the photos of the results:

I know it has been a while since I last posted any pictures of progress but things have been slowly moving along on this build.

Firstly davits and ships boats:

The davits needed adjustment to align over the centreline of the boats.

And the boats have been detailed and painted:

I have also done some detailing for the masthead navigation lights:

20343243212_cca9ddc314_k.jpg

and replaced the kit and 12 and 15 inch signal lamps:

19676290193_fc3c40af64_k.jpg

The kit signal lamps just didn’t look right and the PE lamps were too 2 dimensional (and one tweezer pinged into oblivion! )

And finally a picture of the 15 inch signal lamp fitted.

Many thanks for the kind comments they are appreciated. :thanks:

Firstly apologies for not posting for some time, all the usual excuses I’m afraid, holidays, computer problems, job problems. Blah, blah, blah. :blah:

Getting back on track, as I have decided to go down the route of creating as realistic a model of HMS Somerset as possible I need to add some extra detailing to the 911 tracker radar bases.

As this picture shows there are items stowed under the tracker, these are the maintenance tent (which is somewhat shoddily stowed in this picture) and a collapsible maintenance davit used to bring up heavy items through the hatch.

21065209280_765749913c_b.jpg

The stowed maintenance tent is made using filler on a brass wire former.

21201678991_e449cef484_k.jpg

The maintenance davit is made from 0.3mm brass wire which is bent to shape.

21090661408_62195a8e7d_k.jpg

Lastly the supports for the maintenance deck around the tracker radar and the access ladder were added.

21286656521_b694253a6b_k.jpg

21286662921_9b2f84e26c_k.jpg

more to follow…….eventually. :waiting:

An update at last :poke:

I have now started detail work on the some of the other parts of the model; this time the hangar superstructure block. For my model of HMS Somerset I need to amend the aft liferaft sponsons as they are smaller, this was a relatively simple operation.

For the port sponson I needed to reduce the length and fill in the hole left in the superstructure. I also needed to replace the ladder which has to be moved to align with the reduced sponson size.

The starboard sponson also needed to be reduced in size, also a relatively simple operation.

Other changes to the aft superstructure revolved around not fitting items, most notably the Bowman antennae and the Merlin Helicopter visual landing aids.

The following pictures show progress in the detailing of the hangar superstructure:

Progress continues slowly but surely. :tumble:

I had a bit of a disaster last night, I wasn't watching what I was doing and to cut a very sorry story of incompetence short there was an avalanche in my work area and the forward supperstucture got swept away. :weep:

Fortunately I have recovered all the bits. The foremast suffered the most damage but not so much that it cannot be repaired.

The juggler has been sacked. :chair:

I have added the final bits of PE to the aft superstructure with the life rafts. Next step is to tidy up the painting:

22069721359_f78047b4b1_h.jpg

22256592375_0d2b46a3e5_h.jpg

I need to add some fire hose baskets to the aft end near the hangar doors as these are missing from the moulding.

Also I think I am going to have to make some flight deck fire monitors because the pedestals look bare without them.

So to the centre superstructure construction and detailing;

22149706438_51dac93174_h.jpg

21819980963_e110ac771e_h.jpg

I have added the ladder to the Emergency Conning Position, the White Ensign instructions show the ladder going up the back of the hangar structure which is wrong. Unfortunately I have a nagging feeling that the instructions are incorrect with regard to orientation as well, which I only noticed after I had trimmed and fixed it in place. There is also a four panel door missing from the aft side of the centre superstructure. I have added because I know it’s there and I am being pedantic but it is not that noticeable otherwise.

19676402413_091fbef390_k.jpg

22137003334_4dc432ca65_h.jpg

Another difference is that I needed to add the 5th Funnel exhaust which is not present on Kent, fortunately this is included on the sprue.

17201429062_d6b6989d99_h.jpg

22024339783_2bab243b38_b.jpg

Somerset was part of the 6th Frigate Squadron in 1998 hence the number 6 on the funnel. I still have to address the Ducal Coronets; but that is a story for another day.

I have decided not to use the kit supplied moulding for the Emergency Conning Position, it doesn’t look that good so I have scratch build my own:

22061560633_b5d62ab516_h.jpg

22693894071_729ea8b961_h.jpg

I have also added the Gyro Compass bearing repeaters on to the Ped Sights platform.

22656596751_f7ae1497a5_b.jpg

There is still more to go with the centre superstructure but that will do for now.

Continuing on with detailing: I have added the PE railings to the centre superstructure, including the canvas dodgers on the Ped site platform, you may notice that the railings are on the inside and the outside is smooth, this would be correct as the canvas dodgers are fitted to the outside of the railings. I have tried to paint them so they don’t look too much like a piece of brass sheet.

22391794338_3f392076fb_h.jpg

I have also added the fire hose baskets to the aft superstructure near the hangar doors and I have added the Flightdeck fire monitors to the pedestals on either side of the hangar.

22486506947_7a969bd7af_h.jpg

With the arrival of the Perspex cover I can now start work on the mounting arrangements for Somerset and get on to the home straight.

22024351593_19282cd504_h.jpg

However before I start the seascape I needed to turn my attention back to the hull and start painting it:

22348079861_2b4632574e_h.jpg

22645504235_460f599a15_h.jpg

Not long now before I start integrating it all together.

Taking shape now she is.

Nice bit of work there Paul.

foxy :coolio:

Thank you, I must admit I am quite pleased with how Somerset is turning out. :thanks:

Thank you,

It's been a long old slog, but I think will be worth it in the end. :tumble:

The last week has been spent carefully decorating the hull with assorted decals before I mount the hull on the base and make the sea scape. Decals are mixture of those provided with the kit and Hawk Graphic D3506 1:350 Modern RN Ship Markings.

And finally, I am now getting to the stage of integrating all the bits together here’s how she looks with the bits dry fitted together.

Next up; mounting the hull and making the sea scape.
