maciakba Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) I mean only aluminiums engines..... I was using for engine 15years old humbroll paint aluminum no.56. but I spent it whole. I bought new one but this paint is sometimes matt and sometimes glossy so I cant use this paint. I have also revell and vallejo aluminum but I don’t like them too. :-( So What is your paint for engine? Edited March 16, 2015 by maciakba
maciakba Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 Yes, cars forum, cars engines... And I prefer to brush because I have airbrush only in garage
Fastcat Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Hi Maciakba, It depends on the make of car. Most makers have their own colours. Engines aren't usually matt anyway. A slight sheen would look better in my opinion. It doesn't matter if you use matt or gloss. You can always use a matt clear coat after painting if you're not happy with the paint finish you get. You can get this in a spray can and it gives a much more even finish. If you don't have a spray booth you need to spray outdoors if you can. It sounds as if you need to stir the paint a bit more to get a more even result. Humbrol 56 is gloss aluminium? You can buy this in spray cans too. Most silver finishes look better sprayed. Tamiya is pretty good - it has a fine grain - and you can get it in spray or jar. Hope this is some help. Dave
bhouse Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Engines can be any colour under the sun. Some manufacturers paint the engine, others leave it as pretty much bare metal - but that can include cast iron, mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium etc etc. I think the best approach is to search the Web for colour pictures of the engine you wish to model and base your colour choice on that. And Most importantly, enjoy the process. If the colours are right to your eyes, then they are right! Brian
shood23 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I know you said the airbrush is in the garage but i would recommend using any of alclads regular finishes depending on how you want it, honestly check their website or Google image a pic of the finishes you can get. For me i dont use anything other than alclad for metal finishes anymore but i have heard a few of them dull over time but after 2 years most of mine are fine still Shaun

maciakba Posted March 16, 2015 Author Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) revell aluminium is to shiny for me... upper FS C5 engine is new humbroll part is gloss and part matt dunno why, it should be matt.... bellow is mercedes engine painted with revell which is too shiny for me, for some models its okay and for some not... full size link: http://i.imgbox.com/Lag1glZY.jpg I think I will buy all the aluminium colours available here and to test which is best... and this supra was done with old humbroll colour which is what I like to find now: and I know I can use coat, but I dont want, beause masking will be too dificult, some parts on engine must be shiny and some not thats why Edited March 16, 2015 by maciakba
Black Knight Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Are you using acrylic or enamel paint? If its acrylic you can buy ''matting agent' in a jar from Tamiya. Just add some of this to the acrylic paint and it should make it all matt.
shood23 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 If you want a matt silver then tamiya xf16 is what you want Shaun
maciakba Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 Thanks, I'm using both synth and acrylic, I will try than matt agent and also xf16 hope they will have them in store
Tarheellaw Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 With humbrol enamel you have to keep mixing it even after you think it's mixed enough. It's rediculous but for some reason the matting agent doesn't dissolve well perhaps? Anyway stirring a whole whole lot with a toothpick fixes the problem for me. Shaking just doesn't cut it for some reason. Frustratingly true. Good luck!
maciakba Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 (edited) aaand doing some testing and drinking but the result is that metalcote humbroll 27001 is now winner for me its nearly same as tamiya XF16 but little bit darker what is what I like but I will miss old humbroll 56.... and I was mixing it with toothpick at least for 5 minutes then I use revell thinner and result was awful :-/ Edited March 18, 2015 by maciakba
