Lightningboy2000 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I use the red label zip kicker, mostly by dabbing a drop from the tube end of the sprayer, ( the bit that draws the fluid from the bottle). I also find that the fumes from the end of the flexible tube will set the CA. What I want to know is if there are any "safe" alternatives to stuff like Zap Zip Kicker as I really would like to stop using it. The reason why I wanted to ask this, is that I often scratch build and often struggle to get small items to adhere together. Sometimes I need an instant weld, my current example is the suspension attachments that hold the Spitfire seat to the main frame. If the rod attachment moves slightly I end up with a wonky seat. I have heard that a fine water spray or moisture will accelerate a superglue bond, much like the reason skin bonds so quickly. I've tried that without success though. Has anyone discovered any tricks? Martin
little-cars Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 The bloom in CA is caused by chemicals in the glue. Odorless CA has a lot of these taken out, so there it is less likely that it will bloom. I would try ZAP-O with zip kicker or water and see if this is any better. ( http://www.modellingtools.co.uk/zap-zap-o-20g-10435-p.asp ) Paul

Steve Noble Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 What makes you think it's not safe to use..??
Lightningboy2000 Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 What makes you think it's not safe to use..?? Well it says on the bottle that it contains a chemical known in the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. That's the main bit that gets the alarm bells ringing. Wether that is patently proved or not I don't know. As I say, I am rather careful with it as a result, never use the pump action spray, but I only use a minute drop. Martin
Caerbannog Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I never used ZipKicker but some other accelerators - all smell like mothballs so I assume they are all based on the same chemicals. I guess Zip Kicker smells the same way. I am not sure if the stuff is harmful but the smell is annoying to me too, so an alternative product would be interesting. Have you checked google? http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1610395 http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004/10/stuff_eng_tech_ca_glue.htm http://www.penturners.org/forum/f14/homemade-ca-accelerator-3570/ Rene
Pin Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 What I often do - spray some amount of accelerator into a wine bottle screw cap so that the cap is about 1/5 full with liquid accelerator. I usually do that outdoors to reduce the concentration of fumes. Then do the gluing and apply accelerator with a brush. 1
