1/20 Gans Salvage Ma.k Diorama - COMPLETE!

Hunter Rose

Recommended Posts

Thanks Anorak, yeah now you mention it it does have that kind of look. Its funny because the original plan was to give it a pale beige/white base with dark green stripes like the you'd see on a zoo landrover!

And I hear you about not knowing what to come up with for your camo, I didn't either really, had a rough idea of colours so just sat down with the airbrush and pulled a scheme out of thin air!

Wheels are on! Just gave them a basic darkish silver base coat, these are going to be mostly covered in mud so I'm not sweating how they looks at this stage.

Next up I've started stage 1 of my rusted armor plating. Sponged on a brown/silver/black mix aiming for a tarnished steel look.

20150327_133538_zpsncqretsk.jpg

Next up I'll hit with some very metallic brown on some of the rust colour areas and then it will be all rusty shades of pigments after that.

While I had some silver out I got the light inners on the bullbar painted, and then put the lenses on

20150327_134110_zpssb78zpos.jpg

Next up I'll work more on the armor plating some more, and add some pigment shading/grime to the truck body.

Thanks for looking more soon :)

Okay so I got my weathering well underway, used old rust and standard rust pigments to accentuate my rusted armor plates. I added chips by sponging on a mix of black, burnt umber and silver, and used some graveyard dirt pigment to dirty up the inside of the truck bed.

As you can see I also added some dirty streaks to the bonnet, next up I'll use more graveyard dirt pigment to dirty up and add shadow to the rest of the truck, and then I'll start thinking about mud.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks dude!

Today I've just been continuing the weathering, I've used pigments on the side of the truck to add grime, and lighter shades like europe dust to add a dusty and sun bleached patches. Its a bit subtle in places and doesn't come out too well in the pics but Im pleased with how its looking

20150401_133055_zpsmwfggomv.jpg

You can see I've dusted up the tire rimes and also mixed up a wash using some matte fixer with graveyard dirt and brick dust pigments to use as a dirty wash on the wheels.

Tomorrow I'll put pigments on the other side of the truck and once sealed I'll mix up some mud!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Cheers Ian, I've just started the little bit on the head I showed at the beginning, nothing major with it yet. Want to get the truck done so I can start to see what bits of it I want in the truck and which left damaged on the ground.

Just a quick update to show the pigment work on the other side of the bodywork and the wheels.

First thing I did was accentuate the big dent on the door by adding some old rust and standard rust pigment

20150402_134459_zps1puu37sk.jpg

Then like the other side, I used graveyard dirt and europe dust pigments to add grime shadow and just adding visual interest here and there. And with the wheels I weathered them with graveyard dirt and old rust

20150402_134528_zpsaprsk132.jpg

Next up before I get the mud on think I'll attach the bullbar at the front and give it some rust spots.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks dude!

Okay update time! Been busy cleaning up my setup, got some drawers and finally after all these years organised the bomb site I work in!

20150404_144058_zpsg7u561mx.jpg

And now I'm feeling efficient here's what I've been doing, got the bullbar attached to the truck, sponged on a dark rusty acrylic mix and then just a little browny orange here and there. Also used a dark enamel wash to weather the lenses of the lights.

20150407_131331_zpsrm8kws23.jpg

Then I decided to start working on the mounted gun, so it was time to crack open the spares bins and begin the hunt for interesting parts!

20150406_130146_zpsj8ue32zy.jpg

Basically the bits I have used are 2 1/35 machine gun stocks sanded and glued together, I liked the idea of two side mounted handles so I grabbed 2 hydraulic guns from the ever handy 1/20 f1 pit crew and cut them to fit.

20150406_140205_zpscjm8ieu8.jpg

Then just added a couple more bits from my 1/35 US machine gun set

20150406_142750_zpswvcwjuky.jpg

20150406_143811_zpslcid9bvn.jpg

And whacked on the barrels

20150407_132034_zps4wlwwbf0.jpg

And while I was in the shed I primed and painted the mounting frame

20150407_132457_zpskjubjs8y.jpg

20150407_133233_zpsiicpklt5.jpg

Next up I just want to find/make a decent looking magazine for it and then get it attached to the mounting frame.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Oh no, I used to take comfort from the state of your shed - "my desk isn't *that* much worse..." I would think to myself.

Now I'm going to have to sort it out. Hopefully the extra space at the new house will make things easier.

The truck is looking really good now, can't be long before you start on the Gans?

Cheers,

Will

Thanks mate! We better watch out, I think me tidying the shed is one of the harbingers of the apocalypse!

I do kind of miss the mess, although I've just gone from having a messy bench to messy drawers!

Yeah I'll be starting the gans proper soon, still got a lot of construction to do with the bits, and I've found lots of engine parts from some other 1/20 cars in the sprue stash to use as internal parts for the damaged sections.

the gun looks wicked! How about an ammo belt as opposed to a magazine? It would look pretty hard core. The ammo crate could sit strapped in a frame in the back tray of the ute?

Thanks Madhatter, I had considered an ammo belt, but I dont have anything that fits the scale in the spares bin, and I dont want to muck about buying anything, so I've made the ammo box extra meaty to make up for it!

Looking good hunter -- true molten death to be dealt from that!

Thanks Ian, oh yeah!

Just a little update to show more work on the machine gun, I've got the magazine box built and in place, again using various ammo box/machine gun parts glued in a way never intended!

Next I have to grab some more bits and mount it on the frame.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Neat looking guns but curious how they compare size wise to the truck? Would think 1/35th scale 50s would look kind of small in 1/20th scale.

Cool, I wondered about the barrel length from the photos.

Been fun watching this come along and can't wait to see the salvage part.

Thanks again phil :)

Okay so been working more on the gun and mount frame, I found some bits to mount my gun onto the frame.

20150409_131130_zpsmrrguimf.jpg

And after attaching the bracket bit and some square tube for the fixing point, I reprimed the front section and the resprayed the black

20150409_133547_zpswh3cswnr.jpg

20150409_133703_zpsb8iyn2pc.jpg

Then I stuck it in place with some ca glue

20150410_134111_zps8gn1wx0r.jpg

The machine gun was then primed

20150409_133847_zpsdeb1ofs5.jpg

Next to paint it I used alclad gun metal

20150410_133518_zpszl1jkjno.jpg

Once dry I mixed up some matte black and silver enamel paint to dry brush over it, and I also painted the end bits of the magazine with some olive green, just to break up the gun metal and add a little colour/detail

20150410_161237_zpsgxw6pyz5.jpg

20150410_162224_zpsfendk6al.jpg

SC20150410-222249_zpsdkqgf1ow.png

Finally its attached! Was unsure whether to have it angled down or up, but it looks much better up

20150410_162439_zpsdgdmweun.jpg

Only little thing to do now is add weld seams to where the frame supports meet the roof, so out with the greenstuff

20150410_164034_zpseqsqgn9a.jpg

I decanted some rattle can primer (halfords grey) into a container and brushed it over

20150410_164725_zpsdoseeyfq.jpg

Next up i will paint them, and then weather the frame in a similar way to the bullbar and that is the truck done. I will be adding lots of mud, but I decided to move on to the gans construction and leave the mud till I've started my groundwork so I can use the same mud to ensure the colour isn't wildly off in comparison.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
