Rigging a Wingnuts

Hi Kev,

I have a couple of the WingNuts kits and I decided to purchase what they recommended; their "EZ Line" rigging line:

http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/product?productid=3046

I also purchased their "flat rigging thread" to accommodate for differences in the various wires/cables on the aircraft:

I believe that these should be in scale based on WingNuts recommendations. :)

Cheers,
Dave

Kev,

Their site is actually quite helpful and I would love to dive into one of the two kits I have (Sopwith Pup RNAS and Fokker D.VII (Alb) ) but I'm waiting till I can clear off a few other projects. :)

I believe the site also has some building tips which may be of assistance.

Cheers,
Dave

Whilst we're on about this subject:

I'm wondering about turnbuckles and their differences between UK and German aircraft? I have a few WNW kits to make and like the OP, the rigging is somewhat scaring me a little bit! So could someone who is more proficient at these things than me (not exactly hard though!) do a quite simple step by step guide as to how to go about the process including turnbuckles and anything else! Please!!!

Any help is appreciated!

Chris

Dave, I've bought my buckles and tubes from Bob's buckles and I want to double the line through the tube, I've found somewhere in the UK that supplies it, they do a Heavy (0.15mm) for 1:32 scale and a Fine (0.075mm) for 1:48 & 1:72 scale, I don't suppose you know if the 0.15mm heavy duty will double up in the tube or not, according to the Bobs buckles website he uses 0.12 fishing line but I don't know if he uses the double up method or not.

This is the method I'm going to be using Youtube This might help you a little as well Chris.

Cheers.

Kev.

Just be aware that most aircraft used round wire, only the RFC/RAF used the flat, and then not on everything. Also, German and British aircraft used very different terminal rigging due to the different wire shapes. Google for references, there's lots of them around. When I'm back on my computer, I'll chase down a link to some beautiful rigging screws that I found and post here.

I'd argue that 1/32 doesn't warrant worrying about turnbuckle types and rigging wire profiles, well it hasn't yet on the 12 WNW kits I've built to date, but I appreciate we are all different.

I'd go with the brass sleeve and your rigging line of choice

For rigging my preference would be EZ line although I'd buy it from a UK source rather than WNW. For the Albatros I'd rig the undercarriage with 2lb fishing line as sometimes the albatros can end up with one wing higher than the other and the fishing line is strong enough to bring them in line.

I've settled on fishing line and Bob's Buckles. The EZ line sounded good but it isn't round and it is difficult to place in the holes provided for the control and flying wires. Plus the nearly clear fishing line is easier to color than the dark colored EZ line.

HI Keflin.

Been looking at turnbuckles myself just recently and have found various methods out there. Gas Patch Models actually produce life like turnbuckles but around 12 euro for 30. Could be expensive if there is a lot of rigging wires. I have had a go at the various methods. ( not on a model just to see how they turn out) and I guess, like most modelling, what you settle with depends on just how realistic you want the finished model to be. IPMS stockholm have a good web page http://ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2001/11/stuff_eng_tech_rigging.htm and http://ww1aircraftmodels.com/page6.html gives a different slant and some great tips. Finally I have settled on Monofiliment fishing line 0.08 and 0.05. using the techniques on this page of the website http://ww1aircraftmodels.com/page8.html regardless of the outcome I am sure it will be a ;earning curve but above all fun.....
