CliffB
It's great to see this 'classic' kit being beaten into submission Cliff
kwaterous
Thanks Cliff, I'm not sure who is doing the beating though... Anyway, plenty done over the last two nights, I've finally got it looking like a helicopter!!! The shims got a trim, and I stuck some brass wire into one side to be a locating pin. Sorry for the cruddy photo. Glued my modified bulkhead in place. Basic paint job on the rotor head. I'm proud to say I came up with those details all by myself All of the interior gubbinses stuck where they should be. I'm using the tower thingy because the windows don't show much, and this, whatever it is, conveys the impression that there's something inside. Tail stuck together, also got the seams a molding lines taken care of. Here's another bad picture (happens rather often, sorry guys) This one shows, in an unfocused sort of way, my efforts with the light on the tail. I think he airfix supplied piece is too big, but I really don't care enough to fix it. I've actually tried using red paint to secure the clear bit in place, I'll see how it turns out. A helicopter at last! Fit wasn't too bad, except for right up front, behing where I shimmed it. Tail bit glued on. Fit here was amazing -- seamless. Intakes glued in place. Fit here was less than stellar... Main rotor painted slate gray, I'm not sure if this is what it should be, but I've followed the instructions and it doesn't loom too bad A glimpse of things to come, taken before the rotor got painted. And comment questions advice or other input is appreciated. K
CliffB
I'm just picking up on the shims KW. I'm building an S-61 using Airfix components and a new vac-formed fuselage. Plenty of shimming required there too - I'd assumed this was down to the vacform, but I can see now that the issue may be more fundamental! kwaterous
Well, tiny update time. Finally got this fricking piece lined up right, took me ages. Story of my life rift now. K
milktrip
oh dear K, hope you have enough filler! You guys building the airfix kit for this GB have my complete admiration. Looks like you're beating this though I like the last photo in post 27, be honest did you make "phup, phup, phup, phup, phup" noises after you took the photo, I know I would
kwaterous
Milktrip, I sincerely hope so, I'm using wood filler to rough it out, I've got a big tub of it. If I have to, I can use higher quality filler afterwards. There were no sound effects, but I *may* have made zooming motions with it. K
kwaterous
Well, this will be the end of speedy progress from me. I'm back to school tomorrow But, here's the pictures from today. Got the seams sanded, I think they're sorted, for the most part at least. Replaced some detail, sort of. Also started adding the stickey-outey bits. And stuck the canopy in place. Seams sanded. Detail destroyed. The bottom had nearly all it's detail destroyed, so I figured I'd better add some back. I copied the river lines over from the side, drew em in in pencil, then ran the riveter over the pencil lines. The rivets are impossible to take a picture of, sorry. Said stickey outey bits. The mounting bits for the sponsons. The base for the rotor head was done too. Starting to prepare for those nifty white and red stripes on the tail rotor. Yellow bits on the end of the rotor blades. While I had the yellow out, I decided on a paint test. It's an ancient jar or testor enamel yellow. I think the colour is about right? What do y'all say? Last bit done, canopy was stuck on. I used white glue (Elmer's stuff) because it won't fog it and it sortof works as a filler. This was a bonus because the fit was AWFUL! Comments, espescially input on the paint, are appreciated. kwaterous
Thanks Colin. Progress has slowed down now due to the end of my spring break. Tonight, I made some more progress on the tail rotor, and on the sponsons, and filled and remaining gaps. See what I mean about less progress So, tail rotor. Masked somewhat imprecisely (they're all pretty much the same distance from the end) and hit it with the red. Also added this bit to the underside that blanks off the big hole. I'll thi it down once the glued is well and truly set Here's the sponsons stuck together with the braced for the fuselage attached. The fit here is none too good. All the bits that still had gaps had filler applied. This is filler with a bit of paint in it to make it not show through in light colours. It's also faster drying. The sponsons got the same filler treatment as the fuselage. They were fairly gappey. If you have any questions or whatever, feel free to comment. kwaterous
Should it have? Oh bugger! I'm not sure how well it would fit on the inside though (but that hasn't stopped Airfix yet). The reason I put it on the outside was that, on the inside of the piece (now glued into the fuselage), theres a little round bit that fits nicely into the hole in the bottom of the fuselage. Also, here's the instructions: (not my photo)(sorry its so big) As you can see, Airfix would have you stick it on the outside. Part 87 I will also be thinning the piece down so that it's not so obvious Cheers, K Edited April 1, 2015 by kwaterous Spelling
moaning dolphin
No you have it right. on the real aircraft it was an external plate that was fitted to the underside. It was alot thinner so like you said could do with a rub down but rest assured it is correct You can just make out this one on the Revell version. Hope this helps Bob

kwaterous
Plenty of progress over the last few days, but it seems like I'm going two steps forward, one step back. Got the hole plug fixed, but there's a problem. Got the canopy painted, but there's a problem. Got a bunch of bits together on it, then it snagged in my shirt and went for a test flight. Aargh. The plug for the hole in the bottom has been reduced to a more bearable size. Here's the problem: The deep injector pin mark on the inside sanded right through. Out with the filler. Again. One place where I haven gone backwards is getting the filler sanded down. Canopy. Sponsons. The original plan for the tail rotor didn't work out due to paint leaking under the masks and making a mess if things, so I've got another idea. Painted it black and using bits of spare decal for the stripes. My goodness is this ever fiddly! Canopy painted. Canopy semi-unpainted. Not sure what to do here, ideas? And the drop, not too much damage. One of the sponsons had to be re-glued on and then there was this: The one piece that was eating filler just HAD to be the one that breaks off. Aargh again. It now looks like this: So, all in all, it's been a frustrating few days. If anyone has advice, please share it, espescially vis-a-vis the canopy. kwaterous
More progress Fixed up the canopy, fixed the hole in the bottom, added the stickey-outey bits and got everything painted. Re painted the canopy, not perfect, but it'll do. The sanded through bit on the bottom has been fixed up with some putty. The paint is on. Just old testors yellow in a glass jar. The black area around the exhausts has been painted. The ?radome? has been stuck on, just used white glue because it doesn't need to hold any weight. The black but at the front around the windows has been painted. Also did a mock up to see what it would look like once it was finished. CliffB
I'm really enjoying your build of this 'classic' kit, K. The stark contrast between the yellow and black is pretty unforgiving for hand painted demarcation lines though, so have you tried using masking tape to help get a straighter edge? Cheers Cliff
kwaterous
Hi Cliff and Rodders, I'm going to do another coat to straighten up the lines, they're not great now. The reason that I didn't use use tape the first time around was that the yellow paint was taking a long time to dry. I was wanting to get the paint down (I'm not the most patient of people) and I a as worried about the paint lifting the yellow.
