Rickpadwick1801
Hi Everyone, In memory of Leonard Nimoy, 1931 to 2015. Here is the 3rd of my 4 submissions for this group build, the Revell 1:500 scale USS Enterprise NCC-1701 from Star Trek Into Darkness. Here is the box art : Kit details : - Skill Level 3 - 91 parts - Newly developed construction kit - Large scale, two-piece Saucer Section - Separate command bridge - Multi-part deflector and sensor - Large-scale, two-piece secondary hull - Multi-part nacelles with separate pylons - Many transparent parts, including Bussard collectors and navigation lights - Display stand - Kit suitable for the addition of lighting (equipment not included) - Detailed instructions with tips for painting - Extensive set of decals for the Enterprise Sprue shots Before I stopped all work on this kit, I primed the entire kit, started the painting of it and completed the display stand including painting. Here is the picture f the completed display stand. Because of a mishap with the painting of the kit (see below), I will be stripping the kit back (fairy power spray) and starting all over again. Look for more when the build actually starts. Cheers, Rick Edited May 17, 2015 by Rickpadwick1801
Rickpadwick1801
Just gotta sort out the paint for this kit I.e. a large can of white spray and some clear paint. Need suggestions of paint which will last long enough to spray two kits.
Rickpadwick1801
Still got to strip this kit of paint and then repaint it, but have decided that I will build the saucer components first I.e. adding bridge domes etc. I am still not certain wht paint to go with. I watched the 2 new Star Trek films earlier in the week and this ship looks light grey so i will probably go with that but I am wondering whether white paint as I have been advised by prowler0000 in a different thread would look better. Either way i need know to how many cans of paint to buy as I have got to paint this kit, my USS Reliant kit and an old Enterprise A kit which needs a repaint ? As the GB starts tomorrow morning, I will be getting to work as early as possible so that I an get some stuff done as I am out all day Sunday for the wife's birthday. Knikki
Hi Rick not sure if this will help but I found a whole bunch of Tube videos building up this particular kit. Now this chap has added in lights but I thought the painting of it and the colours he used may or may not help. This I think is Part 1 and I think there are least 6 or more parts to this whole series so you might have to hunt around to get the info your after it is by someone called Trek Works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAPLs25Uf84

He painted the ship in white paint so I will be doing the same. He seems to have very good ideas for lighting the ship, which I am not doing. shadomobile
starshipmodeller.com will give you all the info you need on the JJprise. and it is grey.
Rickpadwick1801
starshipmodeller.com will give you all the info you need on the JJprise. and it is grey. Oh damn, why does it always show different then in photos of the kits that Revell take. The photos of the 1/600 and 1/500 Enterprises both show that they are white rather than grey. Its typical, I've just bought the white paint for it. I guess I will be trying to find a suitable grey paint for it now then. I was planning on using Revell 371 Light Grey paint originally which when I started brush painting it didn't take very well, so the only option I've got is to return the white paint I've bought and get several cans of that colour from an internet shop or possibly from halfords using the RAL number and getting them to mix it up for me (which may make it more cost effective as it would probably be a bigger tin). shadomobile
The original filming miniature/cad render is very light grey but I agree it does appear white on screen so the choice is yours paint it as per the Original or as it appears both IMO are ok. The great thing with Sci Fi is it isn't real!
Rickpadwick1801
Hi Everyone, I have bit the bullet and started spray painting the components of this kit in Humbrol 34 Matt White. 1 half of the saucer section has had to be put in a bin bag with fairy power spray on it as it didn't paint properly. I will be able to begin assembly of the engineering hull and warp nacelles as soon as i paint all of the other components. I still have enough paint left to be able to repaint the saucer section half and then touch up the other part of the saucer. It will have taken 2 cans of paint by the time it is complete. I will have to get 4 more cans of paint for the Enterprise TOS and USS Reliant. Photos when it is finished. Cheers, Rick
Knikki
The Power Spray works well but you may have to go over it with a toothbrush or something similar to get it all off and make sure you wash it well afterwards, paint don't stick so well to power spray and don't ask how I know
Rickpadwick1801
The Power Spray works well but you may have to go over it with a toothbrush or something similar to get it all off and make sure you wash it well afterwards, paint don't stick so well to power spray and don't ask how I know I have lots of experience with Power Spray as I have used it several times myself. I'm about to go up and sort it out so I can repaint it tomorrow.
Rickpadwick1801
Saucer section upper half ready for repainting. Fairy power spray does it again. Photos of the fully painted hull components tonight. Rick
Rickpadwick1801
I won't be repainting this tonight as the bridge dome construction came out of the kit while I was cleaning the paint off this morning, so I will be refitting that tonight and then repainting it tomorrow night. Photos tomorrow. Rick
Dan
Star Trek never did float my boat, but the ships are cool as you like. I'll look forward to watching this progress.

Madhatter
Hi Ric I don't know how much help this will be given the stage your at, but Mr Color 331 mixed 80:20 to flat white will give you that very light grey that looks white at certain angles. There is another Mr Color # - which escapes me right now and I don't have any on hand - that is also a very light grey almost white colour. I've used it before on numerous projects in the past and it's got that appearance of being white when it's actually grey. But to put your mind at rest over your current concerns, if there was an actual model of the ship as opposed to just a CGI one, then the colour will change anyway depending on the scene and ambient lighting. Rickpadwick1801
Spray painting complete. It appears like there are some strange lumps in the paint, which I'm going to have to remove and then touch up with the hairy stick route as the spray paint has now run out. I will post photos soon. Rickpadwick1801
Can't wait to see your progress Rick Thanks Mish, It isn't really that much but I'm hoping to get a lot more done tonight in terms of painting and then I can start actual assembly work. I've got the bridge domes and planetary sensor domes installed. I did this before spray painting as that way I knew they would paint up OK. gregg136
I built this when it was first released and just did it matt white with a light grey band on the underside, although the original seems to have a variation of the aztec detail that was well outside of my skillset.Add into it the clear blue on the nacelles and the deflector dish it doesn't half stand out and look shiny modern. Now, once that paint is dry "on screen" as they say.
