Korean War jets in 1/72 (Airfix P-80C and Hasegawa F-9F2)

Hello modellers,
Second post today with some older aircraft from the Korean war era. Both models were made in 1997 when Airfix re-released the old Shooting Star. This kit was well known to me - being one of the first ever finished models from my childhood days. Although not as great as I had in memory, the parts went together well and the decals made no problems. Built the P-80C out of the box but sanded the landing gear doors thinner, improved the air brakes and added some gun barrels from sprue.
The Hasegawa F-9 Panther is completely out of the box. Found it a very nice little kit but unfortunately hard to find in the shops. Nevertheless have also Hasegawa´s swept wing Cougar in the stash. Both models were painted with Revell enamels.
I hope you like the models

Mario

Hi Uncle Mario!!!!!

its nice to watch those Veteran models with the wonderful master touch from UM Atelliers!!!

I remember the Airfix F80 and Hasegawa nicely done Panther, when they came the first in a smallest series Two box in the 1970's era and the other as a nice USAMinicraft packed in a 8x11" box with two models inthe front , and is incredible how a nice older kit can give a very hard battle to the newcomer kits inthe market that deals to serve the now more accurate model specialist market, but really, a kit like those here presented, with a little love and work can be transformed in a masterpiece in any contest and show as you have done withthe nice samples you have presented here.

I have a very soft spot for those 1950's ladies in my heart, and watching models so nice as you have pre4ssented here made me dream again with this years when build models wasn't so difficult and complicated as in this Photoetched and resin kits of these present times.

Thank you very much for sharing,

cheers,

Luis Alfonso

Very nice set, Mario! I too built that Airfix F-80C many years ago (I did mine as a P-80A). For some reason I've never built or even bought a Panther - I need to correct that (and get around to buying the Cougar while I'm at it).

Jason

Thank you very much Luis Alfonso, Phil, Russ Peter and Jason!

Excellent stuff Mario, ready for an attack mission, going to need your sabre for top cover to fight off your mig 15.

Love the panther pilots helmet, certainly adds something to the look of the aircraft.

Peter

Thank you Peter. Hope the Sabre can help as she is flying around in the depth of the forum somewhere

Thank you Jason. Had to look into your profile to confirm it´s really you. Somehow you appear highly decorated since the last time we talked! Remind me of General Zhukov for some strange reason...

Thank you your kind comment regarding the Shooting Star. I think the P-80 is one of these Airfix kits that most modellers have built once in their lifetime.

BTW: What happened to your Igloo White Neptune and the sensors you wanted to scratch-build?

Yes, I put up an old picture of me for my avatar. I didn't even realise I'd won four Heroes of the Soviet Union! Regarding the OP-2E, I haven't forgotten it, but it's been put on the "back-burner" for various reasons. I still think my idea to use RS-82 rockets from an Il-2 kit will work for the sensors.

Jason

A brilliant duo. I have never built the Panther and I am actually building an Airfix Shooting Star now (the build thread is in the "Work in Progrees" section). The Shooting Star is an excellent kit and even more so considering its from 1973. The dragon decal on the front was always my favourite but the one I have isn't as good as yours. My kit canopy has seen better days as well.

Mario I think the all round build and finish on both are excellent and the superb pilots are just the icing on the cake!

Hi Jason,

big honor if a hero of the Soviet Union writes a comment here and hope the Neptune-build will be given a higher priority again!

Mario

Hi Ian,

Thank you very much for the kind comment. I like the Airfix Shooting Star very much, too. Still have two or three of them in the stash. Will have a look at your WIP thread!

Cheers,

Mario

Two of my favourite jets. But I never did make an Airfix P80. Still on my bucket list.

I remember when it first came out. The fate of the original 'saggin dragon' is a bit sad. It was apparently one of the best performing P80s in the squadron. One very hot Korean day it was realised that most of the P80s would never get airborne because of the density altitude. So the best performers were selected for a mission. Sadly even 'Saggin dragon' couldn't cope and it ran off the end of the runway and was wrecked. It lives on though in model form.

Hi noelh,

Thank you very much for the comment. May I ask where you got the info about "Saggin dragon" from? Would really appreciate reading the whole story!

Best regards,

Mario

I'm afraid I believe I read the story nearly forty years ago around the time the kit was first released. Most probably in Airfix magazine, that's the original Airfix magazine. The story stuck in my mind for some reason. Now it's possible I may still have that magazine somewhere. I certainly have the first one I bought in 1971! But I can't prove the story which is odd because it's the most famous F80.

Update: Had a look through my stash of old Airfix magazines. I couldn't find any reference. However I found the magazine with a bit of googling. It was the June 1976 edition of Airfix magazine. I don't have that copy anymore. But here's the cover. I seem to remember there's a picture of a rather forlorn 'Saggin dragon' sitting on top of some oil drums.

Hi noelh,

Thank you very much for your effort!!!

I knew it was an old kit as I built it for the first time as a child. But seeing that it is from the mid-seventies gives it a new dimension. I still have two kits from the 1997 release in the stash. The box art is the same as in the Airfix magazine you have dug out! Wish there was a possibility to have a look inside the magazine!

Cheers,

Mario

Hi Peter,

thank you very much for your help!

Had a look at your link and obviously that magazine isn´t available for the 30 pence of 1976. Think with shipping to Gemany it will become more expensive than my whole stash of P-80 kits ;)
