The Russians are coming

Bbc news just posted that RAF jets were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft off the coast of Cornwall . I'm sure they're just popping to Truro for some proper pasties?

Keep an eye on the news for more

This sort of thing goes on all of the time, and as for the term "seen" I would imagine the plane was tracked as soon as the pilot pulled his underpants

on in Murmansk that morning! the BBC really should stop trying to be Fox news! The Russians are investing long needed time and money on their air

asset,s hopefully(doubt it) other NATO countries including the UK will take heed and stop penny pinching and risking our future freedom!

Its getting all rather too frequent, serious and tense for my liking.

It certainly is Paul, but as a sixties child it was a lot more tense in the seventies and eighties and it is mainly down to Russia "flexing" their muscle

with totally obsolete(in the main) aircraft they know will be intercepted and escorted "of the premises" They neglected their long range aviation

for many years and a new generation of pilots have to be trained,I am no fan of recent events in Europe but from the Russian view of things they

have lost the "buffer" of their one time Warsaw pact allies and NATO has filled the void right up to their borders and a siege mentality is setting in!

Has anybody thought that the Bears might be targeting the Cornish fishing fleet? Well if you can get rid of an ex KGB agent in London by nuking his sushi,.......imagine what you can do to the entire UK if you nuke the UK`s fish intake at source! Were the Bear crew actually dropping tiny particles of Nuke juice all over the Cornish fishing lanes? See,....I bet nobody thought of that did they?

I`d have a Nimrod,....oh,....er,...well something else flying behind it with an air sampling pod checking the thing out.

What with Russian subs surfacing off Scotland too,......anybody would think that the Russians have noticed some sort of British cut in defence spending or shock horror, maybe even a capability gap in our arsenal and they may just be sending the message for the UK to stay out of their re conquest of Eastern Europe? Has anybody got balls big enough to stand up to them apart from the Ukranians who are already fighting for their country,....well they would have to be made of cast iron, or scarily,.....maybe even pure plutonium,.....and I don`t mean Superman!

Oh I feel all depressed now, so thanks Mr. Putin, thats all your fault too!

Reminds me of the "Not the Nine o'clock News" pieces where a pressenter said ( with a back ground picture of tanks etc) ..... Join the Army that's going places.................. Join the Russian Army.

Dick (Tongue firmly stuck in cheek also ! But not Tony's ):whistle::whistle:

Pffttt, it's a load of $%^& dancing if you ask me.

The silver lining is that NATO will wish to maintain and increase it's European defence. This means there should be increased defence spending, this in turn means more defence contracts, which means a future job for me and my other engineering friends!

Yeah, Mirage 2000 alright. The hysteria generated buy these fairly common events is something to behold, some geniuses seem to think were on the brink of WWIII... Jeysus!!!

Is there a way to like commnents more than once?

Same hysteria in France... Pathetic.

Hiya Ben,

It might mean another World War is on the way too and if you have not qualified by then and don`t have a `protected' job then it is the recruiting sergeant for you my friend in order to join the PBI and become another human travel hump in Putins European Tour. People thought that Hitler was only playing politics right up until we ended up at war,.....the bloke is a maniac! I don`t think that the Chechen`s or Ukranian`s think that he he is only messing around!

I said back in the 90`s during Options For Change (ie massive defence cuts) that people were forgetting about the Russians, but nobody would listen.

Cheers

The scary Russians are coming! Does anyone remember when Matthias Rust landed his plane in Red Square after flying through Russian airspace despite being intercepted.?

Wasnt` that back when they were really weak and still gave a damn about world opinion,.....I`d like to see how far he would get today!

I wouldn`t call it hysteria,......more like concern. I always thought that interceptions of Bears were usually done out over the North Sea,.....not off Cornwall or over the Channel? We`ve also had a Russian sub surface off the coast of Scotland,...... which would not have occurred when we had a Nimrod fleet.

The Russian`s are not sending their Bears over to entertain aviation enthusiasts,.....they are trying to intimidate us. Why?

How long will it take us to build up the forces that we have cut if we suddenly find out that we need them,......decades!

I'm not sure a Bear on it's own is that intimidating (unless it's covered in fur and you're in it's cave). Capability gap in UK forces? Compared with the Cold War there certainly is but russian forces aren't as strong as they were then either. How many Bears does he have and how many crews experienced in flying long range flights like this?

Putin is on shaky ground that is getting shakier by the day as Russia's economy falters and desperate people do desperate things though.

Agree Duncan, and lets not forget what really ended the cold war....Dollars,Reagan outspent the soviet bloc and the threat of "star wars" was something

they couldn,t consider getting involved in money wise, the Hawks in Washington will be rubbing there hands in glee at recent events as an excuse to

raid the money box! one other thing to put things in context: we may be seeing an increase in these lumbering shiney beasts around our coasts but

how many Black odd shape things may be flying around Russian shores or territory without comment?

It's possible... But if that were to be the case, we'd have little left to worry about after the nukes would got us all :boom:

It's nothing new anyway, Russia feels particularly isolated so it's showing it capability... In the form of some ancient strategic bombers albeit armed with cruise missiles.

Changed my mind, I don't want this thread to descend into political anarchy! :P

Nice to see the RAF are doing something useful with their expensive toys ;)

Daily occurrence when I was at Leuchars in 80-81, sometimes several times a day and even a UFO once!

There are a number of posters on shakey ground in this thread. I know it's difficult with this particular subject, but let's keep the politics out of here. First and final warning. :fight:

Someone I know who is in a Radio club, told me that he picks up signals quite frequently that is coming from Over the Horizon Radar, these radars are reflecting off the ionosphere and are used by the Russians.
