Radpoe Spitfire
Hi just asking for advice please. I'm currently building a Vulcan for a commission, but the guy I'm doing it for has asked for it to be weathered. The model is in the green/grey with anti- flash white undersides. Trouble is, none of the 3 Vulcans I've built so far have weathered finishes, so Can anyone please help me out. Many thanks Adrian 👍
pigsty
Hmm. The underside in that scheme was in the original finish, but presumably would have been cleaned as part of the repainting job, so a lot of the weathering would have been at least toned down if not removed. Nonetheless, there were parts of the Vulcan that got very mucky very quickly - for instance the oil cooler outlets, which left great long brown streaks downstream. The new upper surfaces were in a gloss polyurethane finish that took its time weathering. That and fewer outlets topside mean they should probably be cleaner, though there would still be a fair bit of streaking from the off on the control surfaces and around the undercarriage doors. As a further niggle, anything based at Finningley would be dirtier on top than the rest, because it was downwind of the South Yorkshire coal and steel industry. Your best bet, as always: find photographic references and show them to your customer first.
Gary West
Just checked a couple of images and as Sean says, early gloss finishes wethered much slower. From 5 of 6 Ive just checked weathering on the upper surfaces is barely visible but the undersides is quite visible, and mainly restricted to the back end and central rear of the wings - typically where later LAG Vulcans wethered. See image for reference.....
Radpoe Spitfire
Thank you both for your help, it's rare for me to weather my models, but you've been pretty helpful. Many thanks again Adrian 👍👍
