gazza l
Hi everyone, this will be my first WIP so I will endeavour to update you regularly on any progress. Bit of a nostalgic build this one, first built a Vulcan kit in the 80s shortly after it was first released but made the mistake of using Humbrol gloss cote which never fully dried resulting in it becoming a grubby grey dusty mess after 20 years. So a few years ago I stripped it completely, rescribed and painted it in a better quality gloss finish. This time I want to do a camouflaged Vulcan, not sure yet which one, possibly XH558. I will be using resin jet pipes and a new sheet of decals which must be obtained from somewhere. Also I'm planning to rescribe, scratch build a bombay and add detail to the undercarriage/cockpit areas. Very old refurbished Vulcan being used for inspiration! New old kit and resin Jet pipes... let the the sanding commence! Cheers gazza l.
Dave Wilson
Crikey that refurbished Vulcan looks pretty damned good to me.
brianthemodeller
Good luck! Just got mine to the painting stage after half a pack of milliput and a tube of humbrol filler. Still, can't beat a Vulcan, though!!
Air-to-Air
Have to agree with Dave, the refurbished one looks terrific. Good luck with a camouflaged version. I'll be following along as this may be another classic worth adding to the stash.
Alpha Delta 210
I love your anti-flash Vulcan. I'm sure that your camouflaged bird will complement it beautifully.
bentwaters81tfw
I have one on the table. Still haven't sorted the filler in the intakes or closed it up yet. Been static for months. Been displaced by a B-52D refurb. Camo to NMF over white.
Bodmin
My Vulcan went from the shelf of doom to the bin of death just before the decals (XH558) were due to be applied. They in a nice envelope should you wish to have them. Only the instrument panel was used.
gazza l
Thanks chaps, for your nice comments regarding my first vulcan... she looks very much better now after the refurb. My Vulcan went from the shelf of doom to the bin of death just before the decals (XH558) were due to be applied. They in a nice envelope should you wish to have them. Only the instrument panel was used. Sorry to hear of your Vulcan disaster, what went so badly wrong? Thanks also for the decal offer, still not sure which airframe to go for so I will let you know. Anyway I've made some progress. Started on the cockpit and added some resin seats left over from couple of Xtrakit PR-9 kits, maybe not the correct seats but they look better than the kit ones. Also thinned the trailing wing edges which are very oversized. Before on the left, after the right. Removed all raised detail on starboard wing. Then assembled with numerous pegs. Moved the rear cabin windows back and up slightly using clear sprue superglued in place. Finally filled the terrible intakes using dissolved plastic card as a filler, which is a first for me. Thanks for looking, gazza l.
Biggles87
Good start, especially the trailing edges. I wish you luck with the intakes, my first attempt ended up in the bin, largely because I just could not get a satisfactory finish on the intakes or the wing/ fuselage joints. Hi gazza I. Nice work on your big V. I'm with Biggles on the thinned wing trailing edge. That's a neat touch and will make a big difference to the look of the old girl at the end. It's easy to see you know what you're doing. That re-furbed Vulcan looks smashing. Keep at it. Cheers.
Jessica
Decals for pretty much every Vulcan ever. Here's a review of the 1/144 scale sheet.
gazza l
A quick update this evening. Most of the week so far has involved sanding and filling, followed by some more sanding and filling. Filling and sanding of the raised panel lines. More sanding of intakes. Bored with all this sanding I thought I would make a start on the bomb bay. A dry run assembly. Thanks for looking, gazza l.

Thanks for the link Jessica, I think this is the sheet to go for because I still haven't decided on the airframe. Cheers, gazza l
Bedders
As time goes by I'm increasingly of the view that there are two kinds of modeller: those who have built a Vulcan and those who will one day. I'm in the second category, and so will follow this thread with much interest (and some trepidation)! Justin

Probably stay that way till a new mold comes out.............
Martian
Nice start! the bomb bay looks like it has the potential to be a masterpiece, No pressure or anything. I also like the idea of using dissolved putty on the intakes. I shall try it on my V bombers and my Nimrod when I come to build them. IanM558
Can I ask where you got your resin jetpipes from? I've just purchased the Airfix XH558 kit which has the 301 jetpipes and it would be nice to get things right. However looking at the link to the decal sheet I may have to buy another kit to make another Vulcan!
gazza l
Short update this evening, photos to follow. More sanding and thinning of trailing edges, dry fitted the bombay structure and intakes only to find they won't fit in together so I need to come up with a fix... decals ordered. Can I ask where you got your resin jetpipes from? I've just purchased the Airfix XH558 kit which has the 301 jetpipes and it would be nice to get things right. However looking at the link to the decal sheet I may have to buy another kit to make another Vulcan! Hi Ian, the jetpipes are from Freightdog Models, I've had them for some time so I'm not sure if they are still available. I turned a few sets myself out of brass which I might possibly still use. Nice start! the bomb bay looks like it has the potential to be a masterpiece, No pressure or anything. I also like the idea of using dissolved putty on the intakes. I shall try it on my V bombers and my Nimrod when I come to build them. Martin Thanks martin, the dissolved putty is working quite well, it self levels and is easy to sand. stever219
Don't be too enthusiastic sanding down the aileron trailing edges; like the Javelin's they're quite thick and blunt (a bit like me really). If you can get hold of a copy or scan of the Linewrights' Aeroguide there are some useful illustrations of it. Sadly my copy's buried in the loft. Love your bomb bay details: I have a Vulcan lurking near the top of the "to build" pile and I hope you won't mind too much if I plagiarize your work. Biggles87
That bomb bay looks like it will be fantastic but you'll have to make the final display inverted to show it off!
gazza l
Hi everyone, just a quick update from sandfest 2015!!! More work on the intakes, a bit of 800 grit wet'n dry n dry duck taped to a pencil held in me battery drill... works rather well. Thinning of the rudder. Removed all the raised detail. Starting the rescribing process. Hopefully soon, things will get a bit more interesting, gazza l.
Martian
That bomb bay looks like it will be fantastic but you'll have to make the final display inverted to show it off! Or use a mirror, that's what I have done quite successfully in the past. Martin
Val
Great work so far I'd love to do a 1/72 Vulcan, but I'm scared of the Airfix beast!
gazza l
A quick update this evening. Resin jet pipes fitted to the lower section, bit of a fiddle getting them in but they look ok. Also managed to get the intakes and the framework of the bomb bay to fit after a lot of sanding/scraping of the side walls, making the inboard side of the intakes paper thin. Added about 65grams of lead to the nose section, Airfix recommend 30grams but with the resin jet pipes and the extra plastic card in the bomb bay I thought I would add a bit extra. Cheers, gazza l
