Popular Post Fritag
JP3A - CMR T3/T4 The jet was painted as a Church Fenton T3A XN506, code letter 81 circa 1982. XN506 happens to be the T3A that as an 18 year old I did my first solo in on 19 July 1982. First jet solo and first ever solo flight of any description. My first attempt at a resin kit - and it was probably a good one to start with; beautifully moulded and it went together well. OOB save for a bunch of bits and bobs that I'll list at the end. JP5A - Airfix BAC Strikemaster A03049 The jet was painted as a Church Fenton T5A XW360, code letter 129 circa 1982. XW360 was a T5A that I flew on a few occasions and have a photograph of me flying it in formation. It also happens to be a jet that Tim (fiefietim) flew at Church Fenton and he (curse him!) has an better photograph of himself flying it……….Ah well……. It's an old moulding and I only used the fuselage, wings, tailplane and the sliding section of the canopy. Everything else ended up in the bin or the spears box Needed a bit ( ) of work that I'll list at the end. The Piccies: Apologies got those that have already seen all they need to see on the rather extensive WIP (oops). And a couple with my earlier Chipmunk (as promised): CMR T3A: And the Airfix T5A: And this is what I did to em: CMR JP3A: Cockpit: Modified the kit ejection seats by adding a representation of the drogue chute to the top of the head box seats using milliput. Added the scissor shackle from plastic card, the seat height adjustment lever and manual seat separation handle from plastic card, and the oxygen bottle and various rods and cables from plastic rod and copper wire. Solo flight apron for the instructors seat made from wine bottle foil. Simulated the leg restraint cords - wrapped around the control column - made from fuse wire. Added E2 compass and G meter to the internal windscreen framing from rod/plastic strip, Added a few extra details to the deck behind the ejection seats from fine wire. General: Carved out the bilateral vents underneath the engine intakes which for some reason were missing on the kit. New main U/C legs from various sections of plastic rod with wire supports and brake cables. Used bare metal foil for the oleos. In future I think I’ll use Albion alloy tubes instead of plastic rod. New nose leg from plastic rod but did use the bottom part of the CMR resin moulding. The front half of the two tip tanks weren’t symmetrically moulded in the kit - so I cut one off and cast a resin copy of the other to use as a replacement. The UHF aerials were supplied on a PE fret - but I added various other avionics aerials from plastic card and nickel rod. Pitot tube was replaced by one made from plastic strip and a section of hypodermic needle. The nose lights were simulated with little-lenses and then drops of Krystal Klear for the lens covers. Anti-collision lights were made from from plunge moulded clear sprue tinted with Tamiya clear red. Tail light made from stretched clear sprue in black plastic housing. External canopy closing handle made from black stretched sprue. Rear view mirror from spare PE Finish: Used Tamiya flat white, Humbrol Light Aircraft Grey 166, Revell Fiery Red 330 and Tamiya Nato Black. Finished with Tamiya semi-gloss clear with Tamiya Flat clear for the anti-dazzle nose panel. All acrylics. Bit of light panel wash - limited to flying surfaces, the engine bay area and some of the red areas - principally using artist’s oils but also a bit of MIG enamel dark wash. Little bit of filtering using artists oils. Used Tamiya weathering master blocks for the oil staining on the underside (had a couple of good underside reference photos). Very light paint chipping using grey enamel rather than silver. I used a mixture of the kit decals, the Airfix decals and Xtradecal codes with home brew CF logo on the tail courtesy of artwork by Bill (perdu) with a mention of Keith (keefr) for sending me some white Xtradecal numbers when Hannants were out of stock! Scraped away random little bits of the black walkway decals to show the painted colour underneath - which is an effect you used to see quite often on the jets in service. Airfix T5A: Cockpit: Used spare CMR ejection seats - modified as per T3A. Used bits of the Pavla Strikemaster resin set but modified to represent the rather different JP cockpit. Instrument panel fabricated from plastic card. For the instrument I scanned the CMR coloured PE panel and used bits of it. Instrument panel coming crash moulded from plastic card. E2 compass and G meter from rod/plastic strip as per T3A Leg restraint cords from fuse wire as per T3A Avionics boxes behind the seats from plastic strip, avionics support frame made from plastic rod. General: Sanded off all of the raised panel and other details and scribed all the panel lines. Corrected the shape of the fin/rudder using plastic card and milliput. Corrected and added and stiffeners to the rudder and elevators. Cut out and dropped the flaps to the t/o setting - which is how we parked them. Reshaped the U/C bays, boxed them in and added details. Used resins casts of the CMR U/C doors. Added a longer jet pipe from plastic tube. Added all surface detail for flap/aileron/rudder/airbrake and trim tab actuators plus various vents etc. and so on and so forth. Main U/C legs from plastic rod and wire supports etc. as per the T3A. Used resin copies of the CMR wheels as replacements for the Airfix efforts. Nose leg as per the T3A using a resin copy of the the lower section of the CMR part. Added the various avionics aerials from plastic card, spare PE and nickel rod. Added the anti-spin strakes, pitot flow vanes and various engine intake vanes from plastic card. Pitot tube from plastic rod. Wing tip nav lights from clear sprue. Simulated the outer wing forward edges rough paint simulated with stippled Mr Surfacer Anti-collision lights from plunge moulded clear sprue tinted with Tamiya clear red. Tail light from stretched clear spiue. Nose lights from little lenses and the clear cover was plunge moulded. Vac formed windscreen from a resin master. Rain clearing vents from plastic strip. Removed incorrect frame detail from the Airfix sliding canopy section - used modified pavla rear decking panel (corrected incorrect angle), added lip to the bottom of the canopy, added canopy closing handles from black sprue. MDC formed from 0.1mm copper wire - annealed, formed using a jig and then bent to shape with fine tweezers and airbrushed light grey. Stuck in place using a combination of Krystal Klear and Klear. Rear view mirrors from spare PE. Finish: Paints, weathering and decals as per T3A. I like em both. But the Airfix took rather more work - so I have a softer spot for it......... Duncan B
Great work on that massive 50p piece! It must have taken 2 of you to carry it into position beside those 2 real JP's. The WIP makes for great reading too, thanks for sharing all those techniques. Duncan B

Viking
That is the pinaccle of modelling, it just doesn't get better than that, I mean there is nothing that could be done to improve any of them. Guest
All 3 are stunning. I remember these when they filled the skies. Put them on a diorama and they will be so realistic. I like to build aircraft Ive seen to remember good days out spotting. It must be great to build something you have flown in. Whats next of the production line?
