RIAT 2014 Retrospective

Afternoon all,

During these long dark Winter months, I like to take the time to look back over the years photogrpahic efforts, and thought I'd share a few from my favourite week of the year. For the first time I spent fiove days at Fairford for RIAT, attending everyday except the Friday.

Firstly Wednesday, when many of the star items arrived, most notably the Fitters, which would prove to be my aboslute highlight of the show, and probably the season. I was also presented with my first and last opportunity to shoot an A-7 in the air.

The Thursday was a busier day for arrivals, and also offered my first glimpse of the Fitter demo as the pair rehearsed

Saturday's showday was spent at crowd centre, which was the best place possible for the Fitter's missed approaches, The sight, sound and smell of them in full burner was immense!

I had planned to attend flying Legends at Duxford on the Sunday, but weather conditions up there, combined with a large numebr of cancellations meant I spent the day at Fairford, viewing the show from outside the fence. Turned out to be one of the most exhillirating viewing experiences of a show i've ever had.

All in all, a pretty superb week. B)

Thanks for looking, hope they were of interest, there's plenty more on my Flickr account too.

Cheers,

Many thanks all, glad you like them B)

Quality shots, Shaun. If you don't mind, I'd like to use the Red Arrows over the top photo as a screen saver, it's superb,

Sean

By all means, be my guest.

What a stunning selection, Shaun! Really hard to pick a favourite. I was there Friday to Sunday, and like you the Fitters were the highlight for me.

What lens/lenses do you use, if you don't mind me asking?

Don't mind at all, I have a pair of Canon 7Ds that I team up with a 400mm L F5.6 prime and a 100-400L, the former for displaying fast jets, and the latter for helicopters, props, and jets when they are too close for the 400 i.e. the arrival and departure shots. I also have a 24-70 L F2.8 for big and/or close stuff, though none of these were taken with that. It's a setup that pretty much covers all my airshow requirements, though of course I wouldn't say no to a 500mm F4!

Thanks again,

Shaun

Cracking shots Shaun. Crystal clear and sharp. Bravo!

For me, the A400 in the steep right hand, nose down bank is the money shot. The dynamism and drama of that shot make it a winner in my book. With the shimmering vapour over the wings and the wingtip vortices that aircraft looks like it's really getting a clip on. Quite an impressive sight in real life I'd think.

Great stuff

Thanks Shaun. I use Nikon equipment and have recently replaced my 300mm prime with the relatively new 80-400mm AF-S zoom to give me more flexibility. I can't wait for the season to start!

That was a very special moment from the Atlas, with vapour pouring from it throughout the whole of the wingover. Made a lot of us photographers very happy!

Enjoy the new lens, the extra reach of 400mm is a god send at airshows.
