Mildenhall MOD Plod say postponed until 2027, an insider tells me the move to Germany is already $151 Million over budget. There are no shelters for the Ospreys, and flying in Germany is restricted to so many hours per day/week; each day is different, no weekends. Watch this space. None of these points (or parts of them) should be a sudden surprise to the project team, they will have been known from day 1 and I doubt would be new factors in to change any decision? There has been rumblings locally for a while now that the base closure is far from certain. A number of the top brass who socialise with the local council members has been less than subtle about which way they think the closure is going. Might have heard rumours before but this is from an more authoritative source. However doubt whether a trivial little operational consideration like that will stop MOD Estates cashing in on a new housing estate though. PS Operation Juniper Micron? I also not the comment that Lakenheath will be home to over 100 fighters. My understanding is that Lakenheath will retain the two Strike Eagle sqns, and with the addition of two sqns of F-35s that will push the assigned aircraft over 100. Of course in the meantime the Pave Hawks are relocating to Aviano and it is expected that the F-15Cs will retire in the not too distant future. I did think that the recent Bolthole from Waddo was to solve this but while the Taxi ways have got bigger the runway length doesn't seem to have changed. Good job we can refuel the Rivet Joints...... Don't think there was ever a plan to move the F15's, and from what I have seen, the F35's are to compliment the F15's, not replace them, they are, after all, different missions.
