Would not be so sure about Airfix future Mustang sales, most of their "iconic" subjects are not so good sellers as one may think, in fact kits like Spitfire PR.XIX,

Defiant, Whitley etc..are being sold in 4 to 1.compared to Lancasters, mainstream Spitfires, Bf 109s etc..., taking current prices into account

Airfix Mustang will be more expensive than future Weekend Edition from Eduard and app.25% less than MENG....both Eduard and MENG kits will be

far superior to Airfix offering....but again given how cheaply Airfix ( and others ) can produce new toolings these days, have no doubt they will recoup their investement in  the first run....afterwards not so sure.

As for comparison with 1/72 kit sales, they cannot be compared, today in EU there are only two good P-51D kits represented in 1/72- Airfix and Tamiya,

price and availibility are in favor of Airfix...for now.

What facts is this based on? Comparison of kits that are already existing? Comparison of CAD shots? Supposition because you think the above two former companies are better new tool makers than the latter?

I'm not sure how you can be so certain, but if you do have inside information, please share. You would either force Airfix to up their game or save a modeller some cash.

Funny thing, I'm somehow not into the Bubbletop Mustangs. A36? Sure! B or C Mustang? Yes! But the D never caught me. Well, but Eduard will most probably succeed to sell one to me. Coming from their Spitfire and new tooled F/G 109, it'll be the definitive D Mustang. And to have on in the collection can't do any harm I suppose 😁

The only thing we can be fairly certain on is that Eduard and Meng will have better molding quality than Airfix but when it comes to accuracy we will just have to wait and see.

Airfix CAD looks pretty good.

Also, Meng plastic looks like it's much more accurate than the dated Tamiya 1/48 offering.

As for Eduard... it depends. They haven't shown anything yet, and their latest 1/48 kit, while much improved from the abomination it was as first released, is still taller in the fuselage than the accurate Zvezda kit.

So Eduard, Airfix and Meng are all doing new 1/48 Mustangs. Overkill? :hmmm:

Well the Meng is designed as a easy assembly kit so I'm sure that has it's own market, though if it's good it might cut into the sales of the other two a bit. But I'm sure all three manufactures will sell a good number of these P-51's. It's a shame that Eduard are starting with the D and not the B though.

Hi Simon,

facts are current kits and track record of before mentioned companies, Airfix may prove to be accurate but there is no chance ( and that I do know )

that it will be comparable both in number and quality of detail to Eduard and Meng...I would definitely force Airfix to up their game, unfortunately

its not up to me or them, if they were to be properly fin.backed we would see far better kits quality-wont happen until they change their master.

Regards

Tom

Hey Thomas,

I hope you're wrong, maybe this will be the kit they blow everyone out of the water with. I for one believe they have the potential.  That said, I love the 51 so the more the merrier, I hope they have flaps down option etc!

I like the Tamiya 1/48 P51, do we really need a new one and all together three.

Big E, will do a really good tooling, Airfix will also be very good in their rendering,

Meng, Very expensive as we know.

This repeating tooling as gone on for some time, two 1/32, Do 335, got to hurt the model maker in the end.

Two 1/48 Defiant fighters, Airfix kit is brilliant, and Trumpeter will be mid road in design, So many more could have been tooled.

Trumpeter, get in touch with any modeller, and show them the CAD, no more Hornet or Vampire.

Well as long as this behavior is used as a strategy to harm competitors, it'll not go away. Especially some companies (who know their 'project realization process' is faster than others, becaus of... reasons) are pushing aggressively into the market. Which is a saturated one.

If 'we' want this to go away, we need to purchase respectively.

One addition right away: there is the 'bred and butter' any manufacturer considers relevant to their lineup. Me109 Mustangfire etc. The above doesn't apply to those Models imo.

When I look at the same evidence I see that Airfix have consistently improved their kits. Therefore my expectation is that their P51 will be an improvement upon their Spitfire Mk Vb - as was their Hurricane.

As for being "comparable" I see no reason why they should not be compared. The current Airfix Spitfires may not have the fine detail of the kits from Eduard and the panel lines are heavier, but the detail is still good. The most obvious difference is in rivets as in terms of number Eduard win hands down. Personally, I am not caught up with the hobby's obsession with out of scale divots, but if we must have them then let them be like the ones on the Eduard kits which can almost disappear under a coat of paint.

In the end Eduard may just edge ahead, but I don't think we should dismiss the Airfix kit until both are on the work bench.

As already mentioned you will not stop this kind of thing. We all would like a nice tooling of other types instead of repeats in the same year (or close), but at least we have options - one manufacturer messes something up that you don't fancy fixing then avoid that one.

One of these compaines could have tooled something like a twin Mustang instead, but even with these 3 P-51s they would probably sell well over 10 times more than a twin Mustang would sell and they do want to make money.

As for the Tamiya P-51, yes it a nice kit but we do need a new one and as well as these new kits being more accurate they will give us more options without AM or scrathbuilding. The Airfix  kit allows us to to build British Mustangs and hopefully Eduard will do other variants such  as VLR and an F-6D. And bring us 110 gallon teardrop tanks Eduard!

P51 is a brilliant subject for kit manufactures, can see why they would like to have one in their line up.

just a shame, lots of other types are missed out, P51H, and twin Mustang would be great, maybe one day.

Tamiya mustang has it's problems, it is 20+ years old, but a great kit, I myself will buy both new P51s, not Meng, way to expensive.

I have a old Revell kit in 1/48, and that will get made, one day.

I already have ten 1/72 P-51D Mustangs and among them three Airfix. That vill for sure not stopping me to get some more 1/72 P-51d Mustang's if Trumpeter, Meng and Eduard will make them. I would always have space for one more colourfull P-51D. One more green/brown/sky Spitfire Mk. I/II on the other hand... ...well that isn't that funny...

Just curious as to whether this is still active,  seems a long time with no news

Les

No big news but it still gets mentioned now and then in Eduard Info and is still in the design phase. It probably won't be too long before we see a test shot.

Ignoring the inhabitants of this and similar forums.

Eduard and Meng are not easily found ouside the specialist shops and online. I suspect most buyers have never even heard of them.

Eduard will be heavily discounted, as is usual, by such as MJW models a month or three after release.

Probably wont stop me adding an Eduard to the collection as well as Airfix.

Bring them on.

I have the Meng (on sale at £18). It is nice. The build of the Airfix kit in AMM shows something quite special. If I were Eduard I would not be progressing or looking at a new B.

I don't think these kits will effect what Eduard at all,  their kit is bound to be high quality and  very competively priced and I'm sure their B will do very well considering the lack of competition, I'm in for a couple, as for the D, I will wait to see the kit before I decide where my money goes.

Have they proposed a B? Although there are some decent options already the same is true of the D sp gppd news alround. I try to deal in subject rather than kit so will aquire Eduard as well as Eduard. I am currently building my second Monogram D and that too will produce a decent model as will their B in original and especially Promodeller guise. The more the merrier I say.
