AVG Flying Tigers Burma 1942

Hi folks,

Wondering if anyone can confirm my research into the colour scheme of the AVG (Flying Tigers) P-40s operating in Burma in 1942? My research tells me they where Dark Green and Dark Earth camouflage with Neutrall Grey undersides. I ask because I have found a reference that claims the P-40s were painted Dark Green and Light earth with light blue/grey undersides. However I think they may have changed to this scheme when the group relocated to China.

Anyone have any reference they can help with? Thanks.

I've not heard the neutral grey one before Mish, iirc, the original AVG P-40s were diverted from British contracts & painted in US equivalents of RAF colours. The top sides are OK in DG/DE but a lot of discussion has ensued re the undersides which should have been Sky but were maybe misinterpeted as Sky grey & several other shades depending on whose theories are current. It does seem that a pale blueish greenish grey colour covers most bases, I've heard the old Hu95 concrete as being a reasonable shade, lacking more concrete evidence. I'd have said later Flying Tigers P-40s (laye 42/43) would have been more likely to have been OD/Ng

Hi, Blame Mish,

The planes were Tomahawk I taken from British orders, so they were painted in the so called "equivalent" colours from the DuPont range. No neutral Grey undersides. Du Pont Dark Earth 71-009 was (reportedly) lighter and redder (may be a mix with FS30219 would do); Dark Green 71-013 more like FS34092 (I would mix in some with MAP DG); undersurfaces, well, this is where most polemic arises; the colours looks to have been 71-021 "Sky Type S Gray", but it has been regarded to be both a rather pale Sky blue (possibly in the realm of 35622), a more grayish version of MAP Sky, or a rather neutral Light Grey. There is a rather big body of knowledge and discussion at the internet over it. But no Neutral Grey.

Hope that helps.
