perdu
I wondered if you would like to celebrate the forefathers of the cars and trucks that cover the roads these days I made these models a few (few? I mean forty years ago, gosh!) years ago I had it in mind to build a diorama using people and vehicles of the Victorian and Edwardian era based around street life in Birmingham Had it in mind but never got round to doing the buildings even though those old terracotta tiled pubs were quite magnificent to see Anyway, I thought I'd pop these here for you to see The dio is a non starter now BUT I have begun drawing up plans for a scratch build of a Hansom Cab so these will have a new mate to stand around on the club table with at a few shows eventually 54mm scratchbuilds both, shame its so hard to find cart horses The dust was added by me as in character, but I might take some off. Not sure yet And this one is modelled on a photograph taken outside a pub in Brum's Digbeth Quite suitable for petrolheads though, when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties the building became a Ford Showroom Anyone remember Hanger Ford in Digbeth? Both of these models needed serious refurbishment after sitting in a shoe box for all that time All the road springs had to be remade before any other tidying up could happen . Anyway, I hope these work for you, there'll be a Cab along shortly Bill Edited December 22, 2014 by perdu
keefr22
Bill, they're terrific, I really like the dust on the coal wagon, very effective where it isn't anymore after the sack has gone! I wish I'd remembered to go back & have a look at it when you mentioned them at SMW, will definitely have a gander next time! I know you say you can't do a dio with them now, but how about just a small base with a bit of street & the front wall of one of those fantastic old pubs as a backscene? With a tired old Clydesdale pulling the coal wagon, that would look superb! Really nice work there mate! keith

Fastcat
Those are wonderful little models Bill. I hope you find some suitable horses because they're such lovely subjects and deserve to be seen more widely. Look forward to the Hansom cab materialising! Beautiful work. perdu
Thank you chaps I might have a line on a couple of horses Just have to wait and see, charging gallopers wouldnt cut it at all but I have a mate who will look in his old spares boxes after Chrimble And the Hansom is making progress, I have to get the miniature Swann-Morton spokeshave geared up first Would there be an appetite to watch me corking it up on the way? Should there be a WIP? Note I have a ready supply of shiny drinks can metal to hand, raw materials-R-us Edited December 24, 2014 by perdu

Sorry, I missed the bit about you having trouble finding 'osses, I'll keep a lookout for some. keith
Fastcat
Bill, a WIP would be great. I'd love to see how it progresses. There's always a bit of magic watching a few bits of plastic turn into a little gem. Go for it! Just remember to keep out o' the 'oss road! perdu
Riiiight then looks as if some of you will enjoy a WIP so there it is Possibly soon after Christmas then just for brother Edmonds I found a more recent picture of the cart (model was called Fetching The Empties) with all the horse's tack attached Edited December 24, 2014 by perdu
vinnie the panda
Brilliant, I've emptied a few too! 54mm is roughly 1/30 isn't it?, there must be some horse drawn artillery sets with suitable steeds, I don't have any but I'll keep my eye out. Definitely watching the WIP
perdu
I'm not sure whether it is nearer 1/32 or 1/35 But as the original horse came from an Esci horse drawn German Supply wagon I've tended to assume 35th scale Checking dim's and cutting plastic will be happening soon, now the wheels are almost done Not getting a horse will be a pain but Hansoms generally had stays on the shafts to hold them up so horsey could be backed into place so it will still stand free.
Fastcat
Common opinion says that 54mm is nearest1/32 scale but if you take a 6ft man and reduce him to 54mm, I make it nearer to 1/35! But...............I've heard it said that 54mm is supposed to represent a man of average height which is (or was!) about 5'-10" and that makes it nearer to 1/32! It's a silly scale basically but ensured that all toy soldiers were a similar size. I think ICM did a couple of horse drawn sets, one at a gallop or trot, the other in a more passive stance. I think they're in 1/35. They look fairly decent. Dave
keefr22
You could also look at the 'toy' market Bill. Britains seem to have scaled right back since my daughter had her farm 20 years ago, but you can still find their much earlier lead cart horses on e-bay, but they don't seem to do many plastic ones now. And I found these, three of which with a bit of a clean up & lick of paint may work? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breyer-UK-Stablemates-Collection-Horses/dp/B001RJVVWO/ref=sr_1_42?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1419443592&sr=1-42&keywords=1%3A32+horse And 'Russian Commander' with a nice 'oss, not really a Clydesdale though!; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hat-32-Russian-Command-9322/dp/B00AWNUCR6/ref=sr_1_59?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1419443827&sr=1-59&keywords=1%3A32+horse Dunno if the rug is moulded onto the horse though? I'll have to ask my daughter if she still has her farm animals. K

06/24
Britains have been mentioned above. I had a shire with a farm tip cart as a kid (my grandfather and his elder bothers all having been horsemen on farms). They were plastic, and came with harness, like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITAINS-FARM-MODELS-HEAVY-HORSE-MULTI-LISTING-/161610344788 I think they also have done an unharnessed version too. lordairgtar
The above Russian Commander does not come with a horse. I know Breyer has 1/32 scale hosses. https://www.breyerhorses.com/stablemates_horses?fa=PAGE.view
