Peruvian Hawker Hunter F.52

Please excuse the lack of updates gang but life has been rather busy for me and not due to doing lots of model making alas. At the moment this one has had some grey paint splattered on the upper surfaces and I've made a start to masking off for the green to follow. Once done I'll share some photos and hopefully get back to adding the undercarriage parts. In the meantime I'm also searching for suitable raw materials to construct the display base from. So, in summary, not much progress to report but still giving it plenty of thought.

So after 14 days I've finally got the green bits sprayed. Woohoo I hear you cry, progress at last, well if truth be told I've also been collecting the materials for a potential display stand as well so not been totally idle in the intervening fortnight. Will try to get some photos up tomorrow but after stripping of the masking it looks as if there's only a couple areas where paint has crept that will require attention before going any further.

Looking forward to seeing the green bits you got sprayed - I hope you did not mean spayed as I suspect that would be quite messy and painful. Very much looking forward to seeing further progress anyway.

Cheers,

Nigel

Alas Nigel my paintwork can be a messy and painful process but yes I think spraying is probably a reasonably accurate description of what I'm attempting to do.

On the subject of which;

Humbrol Hu-164 for the topsides then masked off,

followed by a coat of Hu-163,

Most of it looks fine apart from a few paint ridges and a couple areas where green has crept under the masks. Micromesh to the rescue there over the next few evenings hopefully.

Really nice looking work with the masks. The Mr Color paint I have been using recently does not appear to leave paint ridges, have you tried them? They are another stonking recommendation I picked up from the good ship Duncan B (who in turn picked them up from one of his off shore mates.) Anyway look forward to seeing this in person.

Cheers,

Nigel

Many years ago (at least 20 but most likely more so I'll not think about it too hard) I did buy a green shade to do the dielectric panels on a MiG-21 and recall it brushed on beautifully. At the time, however, I was happy with the then prevalent Humbrol Authentics range so didn't need any more.

So, a little progress to report, sprayed white on the tail and as an undercoat for the fuselage and upper wing roundels. Once that was dry I masked and painted the red sections of the large fin flash.

This large and colourful marking is one of the main reasons I chose this particular subject and it's a huge step forward in my mind to have it in place. A second coat or the red is required along with a bit of tidy up around its edges but nothing impossible or too great a hardship.

Thanks gents. Yesterday one more section was ticked off the to-do list after I finished the cockpit rear bulkhead detail.

Not added the canopy hood yet as that can stay aside until after the decalling and varnishes are done to avoid spoiling it.

I also found another photo online last night that I'd not come across before.

AVIONHANKER.jpg

This one was posted by a Peruvian modeller called Lucas Herrera and shows something I'd not noticed before. Almost all the photos, profiles, code listings etc. I'd looked at so far described a three digit 600 series serial number in a 'US' style font with straight sides and angled edges rather than the 'UK' style digits with curved radii. This was going to prove a problem for me as all my stock decal sheets are for the UK style. Lucas' photo, however, shows a 100 series code and the 144 I can make up using soe Modeldecal numbers with a slight modification to the height of horizontal bars on the 4s. Going back over one of the photos Tom sent me confirms a 100 series code on the rear fuselage and both Tom and Lucas' photos show the 14 Escadron badge on the nose. Since Tom was kind enough to sort out and send me artwork for this I really need to get this printed as a decal and applied.

...talking about badge of the 14 Escadron, Col: I've got 2 details to correct on it. Hope to get them sorted out and that 'upgraded' artwork sent to you this evening.

Thank you Tom. No rush but I'll be interested to see your revised artwork

Thank you Tom. Next set of bits and bobs was the undercarriage. This is in a semi-retracted position as I plan to mount this one on a stand.

A little more detail parts and painting to add yet then the next task will be making that stand.

Wonderful. I like the idea with semi-retracted gear very much.

...reminds me I'm meanwhile four days late with delivery of corrected unit emblem. So... well, better I shut up and get back to drawing it. ;-)

Thank you for the continued support and encouragement Tom. I'm sure there are a number of us participating in this GB who would not be so far on were it not for you.

With five Hunters already in the display cabinet and countless more in the stash I thought it best to break the monotony of them all sitting in neat rows so one in the throws of take-off should add some visual interest and 'action'.

No rush on that artwork so don't go loosing any sleep to create it as I haven't found anyone willing or able to print me a decal yet unfortunately.

Really nice work there Col. Hmm yep, keep it up. I fail to offer better words of encouragement.

Cheers.

Nigel

Cheers again Nigel, glad you are enjoying the progress, pity you weren't partaking in this GB as I suspect it would have appealled to your sense of the unusual.

Most of the decals are now on;

Investigations continue to try sourcing someone to print the nose badge but in the meantime I'll concentrate on the display stand.

That looks really nice, decals always bring a model to life.

That's a great colour match with the red Col.

Cliff

Thanks again gents.

Getting the decals on was a particular high point for me on this one Nigel as I felt it gave this one a sense of identity.

Was chuffed with how close a match the red paint was straight from the tin Cliff. Quite why I have four slightly different tins of red paint in the collection only a modeller will understand
