Welcome and Rules

Recommended Posts

Welcome, on behalf of myself (CliffB), robvulcan and Col., to the Lesser Built Air Forces Group Build (LBAF GB). As the three co-hosts, we will try our best to keep the GB moving smoothly. We are here to help, so please do not hesitate to contact any one of us if you have a query or comment relating to the GB.

It looks like it will be a large and vibrant GB, so thank you once again for all your support and interest

The Rules

All Britmodeller Group Builds are governed by some basic rules which define their conduct and scope.

The 'conduct' rules are common to all Group Builds and are thoroughly explained elsewhere within the Group Build Forum. Many of you will be familiar with these already, but if this your first GB please do seek these out and familiarise yourself with their contents. The key points include that:

  • models must be no more than 25% complete at the time of joining the GB
  • all builds must be covered by a corresponding Build Thread, which must include photographs showing the key stages of construction
  • the GB threads must not be used to advertise buying, selling or trading activity.

In contrast, the 'scope' rules vary from GB to GB.

The Mission Statement ;) for the LBAF GB has two parts:

  • to encourage the building of models of aircraft from air forces* that are comparatively rarely seen within the Forums of Britmodeller
  • to encourage the representation of air forces* from as many different nations as possible.

* Note: by this we mean a military force that flys aircraft or helicopters in national markings (it therefore includes Army Air Corps etc.)

Our particular rules have therefore been formulated to meet the above objectives:

Rule 1: The subject must be an aircraft or helicopter featuring military national markings from any nation other than the UK, the USA, the USSR, Germany and Japan (which are deemed to be the more frequently built air forces).

Rule 2: Each nation can only be represented by a single build within the GB. Participants may have multiple entries into the GB, but each must represent an additional nation.

Rule 3: Subjects can be drawn from any part of a nation's history, but not the future (for example if aircraft are on order, but not yet delivered). Whifs are also not permissible.

The definition of a nation has not been rigoursly defined, but the following guiding principles have been used so far:

  • the existence of separate (often rival) air forces within a nation, does not permit additional entries for that nation (example: just one Spanish entry is allowed, despite rival Spanish Civil War air forces)
  • countries that have undergone regime change are still deemed to be the same nation (example: just one entry is allowed for Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, not two).
  • the fragmentation of a larger state into a number of smaller independent nations is considered to lead to additional nations (example: builds are allowed for Yugoslavia and also for its former republics - Croatia, Serbia etc.) Although the USSR is not allowed (as a frequently built air force), former Soviet states are allowed as independent states.

In order to make Rule 2 work, partipants are required to reserve the nation(s) that they intend to build.
