Okay, after some discussion, here's the list of allowable subjects for this GB:

UK/Empire/Commonwealth/Free European forces

  • Any aircraft from a Battle of Britain squadron during the Battle; eligible squadrons are so named in AMO N850, and can be found here or here.
  • Figure or vehicle kits modelling a vehicle or person that can be proven to have been at a Royal Air Force Battle of Britain airfield during the battle; the burden of proof to rest upon the builder.
  • RAF air-sea rescue launches that can be proven to have been in service during the battle; the burden of proof to rest upon the builder.

Axis Powers

  • Any Luftwaffe aircraft from a unit participating in the Battle of Britain, within the timeframe of the Battle as accepted by the RAF. As the Germans lost the war (spoiler alert, sorry), they did not provide a convenient battle honor list of squadrons or whatever heathen unit organization they used for our delectation; this Order of Battle from August should serve as a useful starting point, and in general, it should be fairly obvious. As always, when in doubt, the burden of proof rests upon the builder.
  • Any aircraft from the dread Corpo Aero Italiano during the timeframe of the Battle as accepted by the RAF, an order of battle for which may be found here.

Obviously there are a lot of potential subjects that had to be left out, because for a time, the entirety of the war was the Battle of Britain, in one form or another. The omission or exclusion of anyone or thing from the build is in no way intended as a slight against their contribution to the final victory, and, if I may be so bold, to the preservation of a world worth living in. All played their part; but to keep the build manageable and thematically unified, we were forced to make some difficult choices.

My grandfather served with 602 Sqn. as a mechanic during the BoB and was badly injured during a Luftwaffe raid so hopefully I can take part with something suitable as tribute.

While I'm considering what to build in the lesser air forces GB for Denmark I can make a decision on this GB much quicker ...615 Sqd Hurricane - PO Michael Mudie. If I complete that (track record here not good!) then I have a project to build the planes of two pilots one RAF & one Luftwaffe with my surname (its not PO Fraxinus!). I have the kits & decals ready to go.

Well I was going to do the CA Hudson...... but.... as it's not on the list :angrysoapbox.sml: .... looks like I'll have to do something else. :weep: (Just thought it would be a good excuse to get it out of the stash .......

As I live 3 miles away from what was RAF Manston ...... something that flew out of there ???? If that is acceptable ??

Manston was in the thick of the Battle and was bombed heavily on many occasions so it embodies the very essence of the Battle of Britain.

I'm in. With a pretty standard 1/72 Airfix Hurricane.

Are you using the new ragwing kit? If so, I believe there were a couple used in the Battle, but you will have to be very careful with your research.

The Free Czechoslovak squadrons seem to have received several 'L' serial Hurricanes as listed here which were presumably rag-wings...

A couple of them are included in this decal set ... and another one here

Then of course there is the standard Airfix Starter set 615 Squadron one, and I think a Free Polish 303 Squadron one which was included in the AZ Models kit here

... so a few possibilities :)

Cheers,

Stew

I think I might get an Italian bomber to make...probably the Fiat, alongside some escorting Saetta Mc200s. I'm not much for German fighters at all...and though I do have a few RAF aircraft to build I'm a bit tired of them....so looking forward to Italian and French aircraft more.

Of course, French aircraft can't be used here. Though I know some escaped (like 3 D520s) during the BoF I'm unsure whether or not they were included in the BoB. IF anyone knows and can let me know that would be swell, I ADORE French and Italian aircraft so :P

Afraid no French-built aircraft flew in the Battle, though 804 Squadron FAA did fly Martlet Is originally intended for the French Navy (but modified to British specifications by Blackburn) starting in October.

I hope you do grace us with some Italian aircraft. I for one would love to see those builds.

I didn't think so. I don't know what happened to the French aircraft that escaped in BoF that landed in Britain, very small numbers...so I presume most were just kind of left?

Anyway, Fiat G50, Fiat Br20, and Fiat Cr42. Then Mc200s - which I was going to build anyway.

So they are my options :) I'm buying the Br20 when I'm paid anyway...might just spend a bit and not tell my partner haha.

Just a silly idea folks as there seems to be a lot of 1/72 hurricane,s planned, how about looking at trying to represent all or every major squadron

They were impressed and used as hacks and communications aeroplanes on airfileds. Some foreign pilots were able to hang onto a few of them as 'personal' hacks. Once they were severely u/s they were scrapped, owing to lack of spares.
